IAS Visiting Fellow Associate Professor Daniela Irrera delivers a seminar on their research, fully titled "Non-State Actors and Security Threats in the European and Global Context"
Security has deeply changed in the global context, due to recent crises including the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Traditional and non-traditional security threats like organized crime, terrorism, radicalization have already turned into hybrid and requires additional and more sophisticated tools and competences. At the same time, the role of non-state actors, including civil society organizations, is increasing ad diversifying. In the European context, the EU has largely adapted to the changes occurring into the security environment, developing capacities but also facing several challenges. The involvement of non-state actors, like civil society organizations (CSOs) has always been relevant but also difficult, given the intergovernmental nature of several policy fields. The talk intends to focus and problematize all these aspects, by offering some insights from case studies and most recent literature.
