"Is there something wrong with the flowers?" It's actually a play on the incessant pestering in public for donations in the late-60s / early 70s, with the majority of it coming from members of the Hare Krishnas (the two guys in robes at 1:11 in the video). That's also the basis for the "gave at the office" joke. Robert Stack got cheers when he started fighting his way through the pile. I had one of them give me a book ("Please take this free book"), followed by a donation request, followed by him taking it back when i wouldn't donate. They were relentless.

This is a spoof of some airplane disaster movies that were made in the 70’s they were called Airport, Airport 75, Airport 77 and Airport 79 the concorde. The couple doing the airport announcements apparently worked at LAX doing them and were a couple in real life. The lady shocked that her husband had a second cup of coffee was a reference to a famous coffee commercial from the 70’s where wives would always be shocked when their husbands asked for a second cup when they were at a friends house or a restaurant. The two black men were speaking Jive which was a slang language made up by jazz musicians back in the 1930’s and it became popular again in the 70’s. The old lady who spoke it was best known for being the mother from the 1950’s sitcoms leave it to beaver which was known for being very wholesome so people found it really funny to see her speaking Jive. Mr Rogers was the host of a kids tv show that ran from 1968-2001, I was born in 71 so I used to watch his show when I was a little kid.

Tom Hanks played him brilliantly in the movie "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood". Shortly before the movie came out, Hanks learned through genealogy, that he is actually a distant cousin to Fred Rogers and to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.

What is great about this movie is how a certain piece of humor keeps happening throughout the movie. Even though you know what's going to happen its still funny. Like when Striker was telling the old woman his story and bored her into hanging herself. The second person he starts talking to is dressed as a World War 2 Japanese Army officer. Going back to the Samurai the Japanese military had a death before dishonor mindset. If they failed then they would take their sword and stab themselves committing suicide. When I first saw this movie in the theater and we saw Ted talking to this guy most of the audience already started to chuckle because we knew our history and knew what was going to happen. The third person was from India and they have a form of suicide where they pour gasoline on themselves and set themselves on fire. Self Immolation is what its called. Again we laughed because the running gag was Ted boring these people to death. Another memory I have from watching this movie when it first came out was The shit gonna hit the fan joke. By this time we all knew the dialog in the movie was being taken literally. Half the theater started to groan and the other half started to laugh because we all knew what was coming before the movie cut to the fan.

The beginning with the two guys wearing the white sarongs(?) who get offered a flower is a gag, because in those days normally at airports it was those types, Krishnas or some other religious group giving flowers/books then hassling people for donations. His response, "I gave at the office..." was a common rejoinder to get out of giving a donation without flat out saying no but not appearing stingy. Like when someone asks for cash and you say "Sorry, all I have is plastic..." You will see they make fun of this because it was almost plague proportions in some airports. 3:18 was the way credit cards used to be processed. The card was put in the machine with a voucher and the handle drawn the card. This would leave an imprint of the card number on the voucher then the customer would sign. the voucher had 3 copies, a receipt, one for the merchant and one for the bank. The merchant would deposit their voucher like cash. 3:30, you were able to smoke cigarettes on planes. Previously unrestricted but when this was made they had a section dedicated to smokers. 25:9, I wonder how many people recognise Gunderson. The whole movie is a satire of Disaster movies of the time, Airport, etc, and full of tropes associated with them. Gags on adverts of the day, (the woman thinking about her husband), as well as just random sight gags, What really added was the fact many of the leads were well known serious actors of the day.

Fun Fact about the Saturday Night Fever spoof: While he was doing Airplane, Actor Robert Hays (Ted Striker) was also doing a short lived sitcom called Angie and his Angie Co-Star Donna Pescow was in Saturday Night Fever. There is a sequel to Airplane called Airplane 2 The Sequel which is also worth a look just to see William Shatner steal the show.

Most people think it was a parody of the "Airport" disaster movies but in reality, it's actually a parody of a late 1950s movie called "Zero Hour", in fact, except for added jokes, a lot of the scenes were the same. You probably missed the final scene after the end credits rolled where the guy waiting patiently in the taxi said something like "I'll give him ten more minutes but that's it". Also, the main reason that the joke is so funny is who he was. His name was Howard Jarvis, while most people today wouldn't know him from Adam, he was a well-known penny pincher who lead an anti-tax crusade here in California that successfully kept many homeowners from literally being taxed out of their homes. He accomplished this in 1978 with Proposition 13 (officially named the People's Initiative to Limit Property Taxation) that, rolled back the accessed value of property to 1976 values, further limited their increase to 2% per year, and capped the tax rate to 1% of the assessed value of the property. He was a folk hero in California and to think he would wait in a taxi for the cab driver with the meter running was absolutely hilarious. Note: 1978 was the first year I was eligible to vote and my mother was one of the many homeowners that would have lost their homes had there never would have these limits on property taxes and that's why I know so much about the subject.

About five years before the movie, there was an actual mass food poisoning outbreak on a plane. Contaminated ham omelets caused nearly 200 people to get sick. Fortunately, the pilots didn’t get sick and were able to make an emergency landing. It was by luck the pilots hadn’t eaten any of it. Because their biological clocks were still on Alaska time, they had ordered steak dinners instead. After the incident, recommendations were made that pilots and passengers be served different meals during flights to reduce the chances of it happening again.

Another fun movie fact for you: Christopher Lee was the first choice to play the Doctor, but he passed on the project, because he couldn't understand the script. He later admitted regretting turning down the role. Had Lee accepted the role, it's very likely Leslie Nielsen would have remained a dramatic supporting actor for the rest of his life. Also, to answer you at 13:48, Fred Rogers was the host of a children's show here in the States called "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" from the 60s to the early 2000s. He was especially famous for his very calm, friendly and soft-spoken demeanor.

Maybe, maybe not. This might have been the role that turned Leslie Nielsen around, but I was under the impression that he was already known for his backstage antics, like his famous whoppee cushion. I think he really wanted to do comedy, and any role that showed his talent would have done it.

Actually Christopher Lee was the second one to turn down the role. Vincent Price also turned it down and he later claimed it was the worst mistake he made in his career. Also the Roger Murdock role was originally going to be played by Pete Rose but the studio forgot about that when they scheduled filming in August and September so they replaced Rose with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

When the plane was taxiing, It was parodying a train leaving. The sound of the plane was a train moving sound, and the person telling him he better get on the plane, was dressed as a train crew. Plus back in the day, it was normal for people to stick out their heads and arm waving goodbye and everything else on a train when it was departing.

The guys in the robes with shaved heads are supposed to be Hare Krishna followers. They used to bug the crap out of people at airports back then. That's why the one said "No thanks. Leave it to Beaver was before my time and I'm 52y old, but as a kid growing up it was rerun on TV often; I doubt Aria has even seen one episode to get the reference. Many of these jokes are dated and only folks older than 50 would get them all. It's a generational thing.

Nicely done Aria your laugh is infectious. You definitely got almost all the non dated jokes. You have to remember that this movie came out over 40 years ago and a lot of the jokes would only be funny to someone my age. I was in highschool when this came out. Two things the automatic pilot his name is Otto and he is credited as himself in the cast. Second the most subtle joke that goes on throughout the movie is the background noise of the plane is of a propeller flying plane not of a jet they are in.

You'd have to have live in the time this film came out and seen the "Airport" movies, especially "Airport 75," to get ALL the jokes and references. Peter Graves (pilot), Leslie Neilson (Doctor), Lloyd Bridges (air traffic controller), and Robert Stack (pilot on the ground) were all well-known and very famous dramatic actors. This was their first comedic roles, which is why they are so funny. They played it straight. Hearing and seeing them doing off the wall things they'd never done before was hysterical at the time. Lloyd Bridges didn't want to do it at first, but his sons, Beau Bridges and Jeff Bridges, both also very famous and successful actors, talked him into it because they thought it would be a riot to see him "admitting" to having a drinking and drug problems since he was such a straight arrow. Peter Graves, by the way, was Jim Phelps, the main character in the original "Mission Impossible" TV series from the late 60's through the early 70's which the Tom Cruise movies is based on. It's good to know that if you watch "Airplane2!" because there is a reference/joke about it, but you might want to see a bit of the original "Mission Impossible" TV show to truly appreciate it. The guy in the taxi was a well-known businessman in California who successfully lobbied for many reforms to State spending. The joke was that he sat there and let the fare keep going. The woman who says her husband "never has a second cup of coffee at home" did commercials for a coffee brand and that was her line. Later she says, "Jim never vomits at home," which is obviously a spoof of the coffee line. The black guys who speak jive, who wrote all their own lines, was all a set up for the older white woman who speaks jive to them. She was the punch line. That was Barara Billingsley. She was the mom in "Leave It To Beaver, a very white 1950's TV show. The copilot, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, was a super famous basketball player with the LA Lakers.

You forgot to explain the Mayo Clinic joke, the heart transplant patient was played by Jill Whelan, who was Captain Stubing's daughter on Love Boat for 9 seasons, that was really Ethel Merman (possibly her last role), the horse in bed was a spoof on the movie The Godfather, the romantic scene on the beach was a spoof on From Here to Eternity (the catfish next to Elaine's head is not a salt water fish), he's supposed to be an Air Force pilot, but when he shows up at the bar, he's wearing a Naval Aviator's uniform, one of the Hari Krishna characters is Joe Isuzu, the mechanic checking the oil was played by the famous Jimmy JJ Walker from Good Times, the woman trying to apply her makeup in her seat, Charlotte Zucker, is the mother of the Zucker Brothers who made this movie.

The main plot was stolen from Zero Hour, a 1950s movie set in Canada, even though the spirit of the movie was a spoof of the airplane disaster movies that were popular in the 70s. Of course, jokes were added to the source material. The line "It looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking" is taken directly from Zero Hour, but escalates to his having given up other things in this one. Additional movie references are the very opening scene being a reference to Jaws, likening the airplane to a shark, and the bar scene turning into a spoof of Saturday Night Fever. Some things that have changed are that people requesting money for (usually fringe) religious groups in airports are much more tightly policed than in the 80s, smoking was still allowed then but only in the last several rows of seats and not during takeoff and landing, and since 9/11 passengers have been strictly prohibited from entering the cockpit.

I always look for reactors who don't understand some of the timely references. The Mayo Clinic is often considered a leading health center in North America; Hellman's mayonaisse used the Blue & Yellow label on their jars in supermarkets. It's still sold but of course of even younger Americans don't 'get it'. And Kareem Abdul Jabbar is still alive but generally only spotted during the NBA season. "Who's Mr. Rogers" is a reference to an American children's TV host. Barbara Billingsley, the nicely attired white-haired lady was the Mother in 1950s popular LEAVE IT TO BEAVER TV show. All of these fade away and I suspect many more, too. It's interesting to see how your great knowledge of American entertainment history allowed so many others to be laughed at.

An obscure reference I haven't seen mentioned in the comments has to do with George Zip. There was an old movie about famous football coach for Notre Dame University, Knute Rockne, called, appropriately enough, "Knute Rockne, All American". In the movie, Spencer Tracey (Rockne) gives a speech about one of the players who died; his name was George Gipp. And in Rockne's speech, he told the team that George Gipp had asked them to go out there and win just one for the Gipper. The music that swells after the doctor tells him about George Zip is the Notre Dame fight song. The actor who played George Gipp in the old movie was a B-movie actor by the name of Ronald Wilson Reagan. At the time this movie was being made, that actor was running for President (spoiler: he won). Because of that role, President Reagan was nicknamed "The Gipper". That's also why another little jab is made; "I haven't felt this bad since I saw that Ronald Reagan movie".

A few comedies I highly recommend reacting to are Top Secret with a young Val Kilmer, Clue with Tim Curry who played the original Pennywise in Stephen King's IT, and Young Frankenstein directed by Mel Brooks and starring Gene Wilder. Another Mel Brooks movie which parodies Star Wars, is Spaceballs!

I think some of the suicides of boredom were references to real life suicides. The Japanese officer committed harakiri like many did after the defeat of Japan in WWII. And there were cases of suicide by fire as a political protest, many by Buddhists.

Similarly, although you don't show it, the guy who 'thinks he's Ethel Merman' is played by the real Ethel Meman a famous singer in the middle of the last century. 11:12 This was Leslie Nielsen's first comedic role, before this he was known for serious dramatic roles, as were a number of the other actors, them playing it straight it what makes it so funny. 13:58 Mr. Rogers was an American children's TV presenter whose programmes taught children moral lessons. This is specifically a parody of the serious film 'Zero Hour' I'm told this is virtually a scene by scene re-make. Which is why the story holds together well. There's a post-credits scene you should watch as well.

Johnny was great, probably my favorite character. It was not included in this reaction, but he's asked, "Johnny, how about some coffee?", he always replies, "No thanks!" LOL I used to that with my Dad and we'd crack up; love you Dad.

That was fun, glad you liked it! Maybe you are now ready for some Monty Python humor? I highly recommend to start with "The Life of Brian" (It is not quite as absurdly silly as most of their other stuff, LOL). And, since you like music, I highly recommend "This is Spinal Tap!" the ultimate mockumentary about heavy rock and the music business, a true classic. Guess where Metallica had the inspiration for their "black album" from? These guys of Spinal Tap. Absolutely hilarious, countless timeless jokes. I just say "it goes to 11", "don't touch it" "inspired by Mozart" "Dubly" etc, etc. (Those who saw it will instantly understand ... it is a classic comedy, watched in tour buses and hotel rooms of bands for decades ...)

Comedies. You got it: UHF (aka The Vidiot) - ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic being as silly as the guys from Naked Gun / Police Squad / Flying High Skin Deep (1989) - very funny, also deals with a guy struggling with mental issues, so it’s both a comedy and a bit more thoughtful at the same time. What’s Up Doc? (1972) - Classic screwball comedy with Barbra Streisand Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) - Jim Carrey at his funniest Death At A Funeral (2007) - not the later Hollywood remake, this is the original directed by Frank Oz Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) Dumb And Dumber (1994) - another great Jim Carrey comedy Hot Shots (1991) - a spoof of Top Gun, so watch that first. It’s the same sort of movie as Airplane! Johnny Dangerously (1984) - comedy version of mafia movies The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997) - Bill Murray is a great comedic actor The Man With Two Brains (1983) - Steve Martin being very silly This Is Spinal Tap (1984) - I know you like a bit of metal music, this is a great rock documentary that can be very funny Tropic Thunder (2008) - I think you saw this? Very funny, if you didn’t react to this you should. Wayne’s World (1992) - Mike Myers before he made Austin Powers Weekend At Bernie’s (1989) - silly, but fun Hope some of these ideas might seem worthwhile to you. Some very funny stuff in there.

This film is a parody of a 1957 film called "Zero hour". The storyline is the same as are the names of the characters. But the original is not a comedy. The Zucker brothers bought the rights to this film and updated it with comedy added.

I think you would like High Anxiety. It's a Mel Brooks' movie and it is a parody of various Alfred Hitchcock movies. Even if you've never seen an Alfred Hitchcock movie, you would still enjoy it.

I loved watching your reaction to this movie. Unfortunately, a lot of references get missed by modern audiences. To mention but one, the actress playing the mother of the husband who had the second cup of coffee starred in 1970s Yuban coffee commercials saying essentially the same lines about "Jim" not wanting a second cup of coffee. If you like, watch the movie Zero Hour to catch the main inspiration for Airplane! They use many of the same lines verbatim. I was fortunate to see this a couple times in the theatre and there's nothing better than a full house laughing at these gags.

Have you seen Galaxy Quest? It's a parody/love letter to the classic TV show Star Trek. It's funny even without knowing background info, like Shatner's ego, or Nimoy's dislike of his alien character, Spock. This was the original Star Trek that launched the spinoff series in the 1980s, the movies with the original cast, the movies with the Next Gen cast; and ultimately the various reboots in recent years.
