Some of the notes are somewhat discordant, as art this elegant reflective sound has a pagan or rather primitive sound that leaves me glad to be a modern upper mid-western American.... but his strings are superb as is her voice, crystalline and a complete 10.10.

A characteristic way to play the medieval bowl lute, with the hand almost parallel to the strings it plucks. We see at once that it is quite different even from a Renaissance lute, let alone a modern guitar. A wonderful performance, all in all.

English lyrics according to lyricstranslate.com/en/quant-la-doulce-jouvencelle-when-gentle-young-lady.html When the gentle young lady The very gracious and beautiful one With whom I am in love Wants to make me happy Must I not obey her? Of course yes, because it she Who calls me her sweet (boy)friend I could not be happier When the gentle young lady The very gracious and beautiful one With whom I am in love Pleasure in me renews Bitter nature I do not look for, To serve desire in all places In my ability From good to better My will thus is this. When the gentle young lady The very gracious and beautiful one With whom I am in love Wants to make me happy Must I not obey her?

How could England have ever fought the glory of France! Christian unity could have calmed mens minds back then!
@rpc09002010 жыл бұрын
It was fought for the glory of kings, and disputes of who is a rightful heir. Of course that is just the surface though, really it is about controlling people. Why are men not calm now, where is unity and calm in our modern world? We sure could use it now; oH*, yeah, it is about control.

The instrument is an oud, actually from northern Africa and southwest Asia.
@andreafalconiero90895 жыл бұрын
No, the instrument is a _lute_ from western Europe, as is the music, of course. You can tell it's a lute because it is fretted, although there are other design details that also make this clear.

Medieval lute need to be played with plectrum of feather in order to sound authentic.Thus it gave music more renaissance vibe.

And more precisely with an eagle feather plectrum like for the arabian oud

_____Medieval Europe before the Enlightenment produced awesome songs--medieval tunes, Christmas carols, etcetera. Medieval Europe AFTER the Enlightenment produced awesome songs--all the songs we enjoy to this day. It's just that CLASSICAL music--music made during the Enlightement--really, really sucks. Nobody who lives five miles from a college campus loves that crap.
@LaCarusiella14 жыл бұрын
this is great but the lute makes me think of Dowland and the Renaissance, not the Middle Ages...I think they used the Oud back then, which they imported from the East coming back from the Crusades.
@andreafalconiero90895 жыл бұрын
No, Europeans didn't generally use the _oud_ in the middle ages. There are images of fretted, bowl-backed chordophones (lutes) in illustrations found in the _Cantigas de Santa Maria_ (ca. 1250) which are distinctly different than the ouds that are also illustrated in the same work, and that is about *150 years* before the end of the high middle ages ca. 1400 when this music was composed and performed. Early forms of the lute which are usually described as _cythara_ are also depicted in other European manuscripts as early as 830 AD. It is possible that the design and construction of the lute was influenced by ouds brought back to Spain, but this type of instrument was certainly nothing _new_ to European musicians -- they'd been playing similar instruments for centuries!

This is a fabulous rendition of a fabulous tune, performed with emotion and love. BUT someone needs to talk to the early music community about not going half-way when wearing "period" clothing to perform. No, it's not enough to put together a polyester velvet gown from a Simplicity pattern and call it medieval (even if Simplicity calls it medieval). And butterfly hair clips...they did NOT have butterfly hair clips in Machaut's time, I'm sorry. If you can't do it plausibly, please don't do it.
