Dogmatix not coming to Britain in the book was a reference to quarantine rules still existing in a modified form today which made it difficult to bring pets from continental Europe into Britain.

He probably didn't want to bring Dogmatix because since Britain is so close to France, he's going to be back with Dogmatix sooner than when he went to Egypt.

The fat legionary is the one referred to as Detritus in the comic, and I believe the little guy is the one named Chateaupetrus in the credits, but I'm not sure.

The animation is an improvement over the 60s adaptations, but everyone acts like they either drank way too much cappuccino or they’re having a seizure.

How faithful was the cartoon? Much more faithful than the live action film, that’s for sure...
@Danko_Sekulic2 жыл бұрын
As far as I can remember, it is the most faithful adaptation to the day. EDIT I forgot the very first adaptation made in the 60s (aAsterix the Gaul)! That one was nearly 100% faithful to the source material, but it was still dismissed by the creators on account of its poor animation and (or so the rumour has it) rushed production.

I am a bit late to this, but when I grew up you couldn't take dogs from European mainland to the UK because quarantine regulations were super strict. (6 month quarantines for pets). This was because pre EU, the British Isles were considered rabies free and the mainland wasn't. I always thought that was being parodied when Idefix was left behind. Could be wrong. Btw, today Europe is considered rabies free too.

No. They are throwing the ball and hitting it with bats. That is cricket. Croquet is hitting the ball along the ground using a long mallet.

I'm now desperately curious to find out how the original French version depicted posh English in French.
@Xerxes20052 жыл бұрын
Oh, in the cartoon, apart of the English accent, they do like in the book: they translate English idioms directly. When Anticlimax (Jolitorax in French) says "Let's shake hands", it is translated by "secouons-nous les mains!" hence why Obelix proceeds to shake Anticlimax. The correct way to say "to shake hands" in French is "se serrer la main" (to squeeze each other's hand"). When he says "I beg your pardon", he will say "je demande votre pardon" instead of "je vous demande pardon." "A bit of luck" becomes "un morceau de chance" and "all that sort of things" becomes "toute cette sorte de choses" (which sounds very ridiculous in French)."He's gone absolutely nuts" becomes "il est devenu absolument noix". The worst one might be "J'étais en dehors de mes esprits avec inquiétude" (I was out of my mind with worry). The Britons will also systematically place adjectives before the noun, as in English. So "magic potion" is "magique potion" (instead of potion magique) and "Roman legion" is "romaine légion" (instead of légion romaine). "Goodness gracious" becomes "bonté gracieuse" and "I say!" and "isn't it?" become "je dis!" (like in: "I say, here are our seats!") and "n'est-il-pas?" (instead of n'est-ce pas) which is answered by "il est" (which sounds weird in French).
@Xerxes20052 жыл бұрын
I don't know why they changed the Briton chieftain's name, since it was already a name in English. In French, he is called "Zebigbos" (The big boss). Uderzo made him look like Winston Churchill (with a mustache).

Asterix is quite well known in the UK. I remember getting the books at the library. The animated films were all shown on BBC2 at one point. A shame things like "Lucky Luke" never really caught on over here. I read a few of those and they really were funny at times.
