This film does a great jobs at showing the importance of balancing when to preserve tradition, and when move on from it. Demonix's early to advice to Cholerix, such as keeping vial on the left as he's left handed is very practical and is what wins his trust. But Cholerix's later lack of observation of tradition ends up proving him unworthy, as making the potion in front of someone else risk the secret getting, and not respecting Tradition would also defeat the purpose of passing on the Magic Potion, to preserve Gaulish Culture

I think the lession is more to respect what the culture and the traditions are that observing them blindly. Demonix does not lie one bit at Cholerix in the first part of the film, his advices are all quite good and they are what he needs to impress. The entire search was not for a druid who could respect taditions by remembering them, but had simply respect in his heart, a natural respect that comes from showing others the beauty of druid magic by doing something beautiful but fundamentally useless. The film really delves a lot in how something can be both right and wrong depending on the situation, and it’s quite a gem for this.

@@CrowMercury modt of the Asterix series is about that. Beneath all the goofiness, it is all about doing whats right but within reason. Ceasar especially plays into that a lot. Every time a roman goes overboard and does unnessecary harm just to beat the village, he chastizes them. The only time Ceasar himself goes overboard is in egypt, which cannonically is one of, if not the second earliest encounters Ceasar has with Asterix and co directly. He learns quick, and every time he tries to deal with the Gauls he keeps it focused. Same with Asterix and co. While they help friends and allies against the romans, they never go so far to destabalize Rome or Caesar's rule. Cause that would bring turmoil to pretty much all of western europ and the mediteranian. It stays a privat matter. Same with the magic potion. Yes,it could have been used to prevent Roman occupation. But this ship has sailed. All that can be done now within reason, without risking the suffereing of pretty much all of Rome and its subjects, is to keep islands of resistance and conservated culture. Asterix even sais in Asterix at the olypics "We are Romans". And he is right. While they are indipendant and still keep their culture and traditions... The romans have already won. And changing that wount help, but actually make it all worse. Keep in mind, historically, the collaps of Rome lead to technogical and developmental downfall in europe, so bad the time periods were call the dark ages or the med"evil"s. While Miraculix has never shown much divination skills, he is known to be very wise, and I personally am certain he forsaw the chance for such a downfall. And that is why he refused to drive out the romans. In addition to that, if the potion becomes to popular, and both sides in a battle orwar get it, the power of the magic potion is effectivly nullified. Which in return would give the victory to the side who would have won if no potion was involved. The Romans. Miraculix was much wiser and practical then any other druid.

Demonix is so far the best villain in the franchise. Hands down. 1. He's got a point in his arguments (the potion should be used to drive the Romans out of the whole country instead of always defending one small village) 2. He's so far the closest approach to having an evil counterpart to Getafix (even closer than the Soothsayer and Cryptograf who kind of resembled Getafix but were no druids) and even shares a personal history with him 3. The druids don’t acknowledge that a girl is doing druid stuff, Asterix doesn’t explain to obelix that he was just passing the mantle to Geriatrix to prove a point and instead just walks off.

While this is fairly late, and the others have good points, you have to remember the lager scale as well, could the potion be used to drive out the romans? sure, but that could have the effect of collapsing the empire, plunging the rest of the continent into chaos, as other empires would see the roman defeat as weakness and attack. there's a comment above yours that says it much better that's the gist of it.

If every Gaul had the magic potion, they might overthrow the Roman Empire... and then _replace it._ Or at the very least make a mess of the known world. Just look at how often the indomitables make a mess of their village with their brawls. Not to mention, the more people know a secret, the more likely it is that someone will spill the beans to the wrong person eventually. Then everyone would have the potion and things would be back to square one.

@@Varko-Farsight The analogy doesn't apply efficiently since the potion isn't what the argument is about, but the recipe, knowledge that can be spreaded and shared, not a single item that can be given up.
