Computer simulations have already been ran using that exact scenario. Besides the idea that the entire Venture is almost impossible, if we pulled it off, at the distance, necessary to nuke it, before it reached our atmosphere, it would accrete under its own gravitational force back into a fiery ball and cause even more damage. Actually yeah, Apophis is still probable to impact earth. In computers theres something called floating point inaccuracies, as the dataset gets larger the inaccuracy of our computer also increases. There's also the N-body problem at play that might impact the actual trajectory and make it difficult to predict in regards to chaos theory. NASA had been monitoring this rock regularly for quite some time now. On 2021 they were predicting 8 years of the asteroids' trajectory and a different data than what we are seeing right now. We could be seeing massive or tiny difference within those time frame. They could also be hiding data from us to prevent early panic which is an understandable approach from NASA. For all I know their statistics show unlikeliness (not impossible) to hit earth.

NASA didn't publicize the DART mission and their success for no reason. They are getting ready to try and move Apophis out of Earth's orbit because they know it is going to impact the planet. Letting people know the success of the DART mission will help minimize civil unrest just before the end.

We can't redirect it. The DART mission slowed down an asteroid and made the orbit smaller. If we did that here, it would only make the orbit go closer to Earth. We don't have enough chemical combustion to chase down an astroid from behind to boost its orbit with a measurable impact.

@@KBowWow75 Of course we can. DART was specifically chosen so that we can observe the change in orbital period from Earth. It would be extremely difficult to detect an altered trajectory from this distance. What matters in this case is moving it sufficiently to get it away from a gravitational keyhole created by Earth. The reason we can't project the asteroid's course too far into the future is because there is too much margin of error in being able to project forward after a gravitational keyhole interaction. What we need to do instead is knock it far enough off course that it no longer keyholes near Earth, then we can project it's course thousands of years into the future. The main problem with a redirect of Apophis is that it would take longer to get to it than the period between each gravitational keyhole, meaning that by the time we mapped out it's course after it came close to Earth and launched a probe, it would be too late to redirect any meaningful amount, so the next best option is to try and get explosives there to create a bigger redirection at a later stage in it's approach to Earth.

It's small enough that something equivalent to a basic C4 charge could blow it off course so long as you hit it in the right place with enough time before Earth impact to sufficiently alter its trajectory. A nuke would probably blow it to pieces because it's less than 400m across - but the explosion could turn it into a lot of shrapnel that could take out satellites and such.
