I had an astigmatism in my right eye and didn't know and it's slight but it caused so many issues and I'm now getting them corrected. Got glasses for the first time and it's definitely an adjustment but better than being miserable all the time from motion sickness and headaches and anxiety attacks

Thanks Antonio! Your videos about astigmatism finally allow me to show people what my daily experience is like. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 40s that I got glasses that actually corrected the astigmatisms (well, mostly) as well as the myopia, and the last few years for me have been very different as a result!

Good video. It helps explain why I have trouble driving at night in town especially when it rains. Wish you could show that scenario. Lots of cars, street lights and rain. My husband needs to see it to understand why its so hard. I suggest if you have astigmatism try driving in your good sunglasses. It doesn't make it too dark to see at all and makes a world of difference.

Under those conditions you listed, there's a tremendous amount of light reflecting off the rain, the wet road, adding to the night lights, all of which overwhelm the eye, displacing what would be normal attention placed on the scene. All of that reflection is not only distracting but demands our attention and makes the situation difficult.

I learnt that I have astigmatism just two days ago and got prescribed my first glasses, both regular and sunglasses. Basically I noticed after all the lockdowns during the pandemic it became uncomfortable for me to drive at night. I thought the reason was due to lack of driving. But this year I noticed that every time I go to a recording studio I struggle reading from the screen, when other people don’t. So I visited a doctor and they found astigmatism. I remember when I was a teenager, my friend got prescribed some strange black glasses with tiny holes and I tried them on. I was surprised how clear I could see in them. But I thought it was normal. And my eye exams would always be perfect until this year. At my latest eye exam I wasn’t able to read small font at all. The letters looked like blurry spots. Also when I look at an electronic watch display I see the numbers doubled. And when I look at objects, I often see some kind of an aura around them, no clear lines.

I had -5.75 near sightedness when I was younger. Did Lasik to improve that, after a few weeks I had basically perfect vision. Now, around 20 years later, I am again seeing that my near sightedness is creeping back, I'm guessing it's 0.25-0.5 on at least one eye now. But that's after 20 years of almost perfect vision. Taking Lasik was by far the best quality of life imprevement medical decision I have ever taken in my life.

I get the "lines" on lights, especially at night, stars aren't dots etc. but I don't have any blurriness like in the examples when I am close to something. I also have blurriness when looking farther away, but I feel like that's from being near a screen 24/7, and when I go to the movies, the movie is somewhat blurry in the first 30 minutes but becomes clear over time as my eyes adjust. Not certain if it's astigmatism on some mild level along with it only affecting me like/when nearsightedness does, which could very well just be weakness in eye muscles, as it's significantly worse if I am on my phone (closer than a computer screen) for a good while, then try to look further away, and it's significantly blurrier than if I hadn't been on my phone, and takes a considerable time to "go away".

Many, many years ago I was hunting geese with a friend very early in the morning. At that time in my life I didn't normally get up early so I was very tired. It was a clear morning and very little activity. Finally we heard a goose in the distance so my friend started calling with his goose call. Soon they were coming straight in so I told my friend I would take the one on the right. He turned and looked at me to see if I was serious. After I said it again he told me there was only one goose. The goose finally turned and I could still see two geese flying, and they fly in unison so it didn't look unusual to me. He told me again there was only one goose. I turned and looked at the rim rock that was a couple of miles distant and there was an exact duplicate of every tree that was on the skyline. I then realized I was seeing double horizontally so I covered one eye and I was still seeing double. It didn't matter which eye I covered, I was seeing double horizontal images. Most of the time my vision was somewhat blurry so I finally decided to go to the eye doctor. I told him the story and he said it was impossible! I didn't say much because he was a "doctor", but I knew what I saw. The glasses helped my vision, but years later I was camping and when I woke up I was seeing double again. I put on my glasses and it pulled my eyes very hard. and I took them back off for awhile. I eventually was able to wear them, but I didn't know until recently what had actually been the problem. You reinforced it today when you explained astigmatism. Since getting glasses I have always had 15-20 vision, but as I get older I notice my near vision is not as good as it once was. I wear my glasses religiously, and I have considered Lasik surgery, but I would lose the protection to my eyes that my glasses give me, and I am in an environment that my eyes need protection. I don't skip wearing safety glasses, but there are times when you don't expect a threat to your eyes and they do a good job of protecting them. Great Channel and I will watch all of the episodes. They explain the problems almost everyone on the planet has in one form or another.

The grade varies from around 1.75 to more than 3, according the time of day, amount of light, etc, etc, etc. according to the eye-specialists it is a neurological issue (ocular Myasthenia Gravis)and they cannot do anything for whilst it is so variable. Even during their examination it changes.

Good explanation thanks. I believe I have a combination of against the rule and oblique stigmatism.. My optician said I needed "prismatic" lenses. Can you explain how these lenses function, perhaps in a follow up video.
@Beading_Kate
@Beading_Kate 6 ай бұрын
No, I’m afraid you have other issue. Prismatic lenses are not meant to correct astigmatism, they correct issues with binocular vision. It may be cross eye, may be lazy eye… something that makes it difficult to see with both eyes at the same time. Prisms, I think, help to compensate the misaligned image which occurs due to misaligned eyes. Prism itself has nothing to do with astigmatism. Astigmatism is corrected with cylindrical lenses, they correct the image on a certain axis (with the rule at 0 or 180 degrees, against the rule at 90 degrees, and oblique with axis anywhere in between 0 to 90 degrees and 90 to 180 degrees).

When I was around 15 years, I got my first glasses, not very strong, but with the diagonal oblique astigmatism. They were R -1.00 sph/0.50 cyl at 45 degrees and Left eye - 1.00 sph/-0.50 cyl at 135 degrees. I had terrible problems in the first month. When I was in front of a house (say, a white wall) the eyes began a kind of rolling, and it looked, as if the wall fell down in front of my feet. This was every 5 minutes the first day, then less, but it took a month until stabilized. Vision was way better and exact then, and I never went without glasses, but the first month was very difficult, and if the doc would not have explained and insisted, that I should wear these glasses, I would have given up.

I have WTR astigmatism,. My axis changed over time from 0 and 180 to 4 and 171 respectively. I see the text right as it was shown in this video. But can you please tell me why do I see the lights in tge dark completely differently? There is no clearly visible line streak for me, but instead I see the lights as smudged little snowflakes or maybe fingerprints… the light source looks like it is a glowing textured oval (larger than the actual light source) made of fine lines, like fine lace on mesh. I can only see linear streaks if I squint. I have myopia and astigmatism, -6.00 -2.25 ax 4 in my right eye and -4.50 -3.25 ax 171 in my left eye. I wear eyeglasses (R sph -5.25 cyl -2.00 ax 4 and L sph -4.50 cyl -3.00 ax 171), and with them I see as clearly as possible. But those oval lace lights still puzzle me. What might the cause be, an astigmatism? Why don’t I see straight lines as shown here? Is anything wrong with my astigmatism? 😂 I mean, yes, it is obviously everything wrong with my eyes, but why do I see it differently?

I have astigmatism with eye 'wobble'..where my eyes rapidly move from side to side. Sometimes my head also goes from side to side as if to correct it. Is that related to the astigmatism, or something else? I was diagnosed as having ocular albinism, and I classed as partially sighted. Could you do a video about ocular albinism, as even at my age, I still don't understand it properly. The light also hurts my eyes, but I can't get sunglasses with my prescription lenses, and I can't get the clip on shades as they scratch my thick lenses. The optician told me I can't even get the photochromatic lenses with my prescription. I don't know how to protect my eyes when I go outside...as I live in Thailand and it's usually really bright sunlight. I have to squint my eyes and I get bad headaches nearly every day. :(
@jonathonyan4040
@jonathonyan4040 Жыл бұрын
Movement of the eye side to side sounds like nystagmus which is associated with albinism. In terms of eye protection, you may find fit overs, large tinted glasses to fit on top and in case your prescription glasses. These can be polarised or just normal tints.

I am sorry that you struggle. Do you have especially severe astigmatism? I have myopia combined with astigmatism and I have sunglasses, made with my prescription. I won’t ask your prescription, because I don’t know whether you are comfortable sharing it. I’ll just tell what my eyeglasses prescription is: sph -5.25 cyl -2.00 ax 4 sph -4.50 cyl -3.00 ax 171 It is not severe case, but it is not a mild one either. I was able to get sunglasses made for me. In the past one of my eyes had been even worse, the prescription cylinder was -3.25, and I still was able to get sunglasses. I hope that you’ll find a way to protect your eyes.

I have a question that I'm wondering if you might know the answer to. With regards to astigmatism, what might cause the distance to the test to change which direction the lines are blurry and clear? Close up the horizontal lines are more clear and the vertical most fuzzy, but when at a distance that is not say reading distance to perhaps a monitor and further away it's the opposite. So when further away the horizontal lines are now fuzzy yet the vertical lines are now clear. If it were the shape of my eye lens or cornea wouldn't they be the same or similar direction no matter the distance?

Please help me by replying RIGHT EYE Without Specs - It appears clear up to a distance of 1m, but still has some blurriness up close. Beyond 1m, it is completely blurry. LEFT EYE Without Specs - The cylindrical power (astigmatism) makes things appear entirely blurry up close, with a strange type of blurriness, almost as if the words are being stretched. The level of blur remains the same for both near and distant objects. With Specs - Sometimes it appears entirely clear, and sometimes blurry. It varies, as if the eye's power keeps changing. When I need to see something up close or read a book, the words become clear when I apply a lot of pressure to my eyes, forcing them to focus. However, after a while, my eyes get tired, and things start to blur again. I experience some mild discomfort in my eyes and head as well. When I wear glasses, I feel like there is less space between objects, and it always feels like I'm dreaming. Without glasses, I cannot see things up close clearly but easily focus, and there is also a better sense of space between objects. That's why I prefer reading books or using a tablet without glasses, as when I read with glasses, my entire mind gets focused on making the words clear, and I can't imagine, visualize, or think about what I want to. Additionally, I experience astigmatism in my close vision, both with and without glasses, sometimes less and sometimes more. When I visit an eye specialist and they conduct an eye checkup using machines, the doctor says that my glasses prescription is correct and gives me the same power glasses. During the eye test, due to the pressure applied to my eyes, things appear focused, but the same problem returns afterward.
