Hi! Thanks for this video. Can you tell me what's the difference between this ASTM D6413 vertical flame spread test and the NFPA 701? I am scheduled to take the NCIDQ test exam this fall and we had a questions about this. I am not clear on when one of the tests would be required over another, or what the differentiating criteria is. Can you shed some light on this?

The test setup for each standard is different (sample geometry, flame type, flame time, etc.). The procedures are also very different. UL94 is traditionally used for materials used as parts in devices while ASTM D6413 is used for textiles.

What gas are you burning? Propane or butane?

It depends on the standard. Some such as FAR standards may require specific gas blends. Some may be fine with propane/butane. I would check the standard and what it specifies in terms of the temperature and gas type.
