Modern Ferrari’s have been criticised for their steering for years now. It’s generally razor sharp and alert but devoid of any real feel; that’s just the Ferrari way these days. Bear in mind better steering doesn’t mean better handling; I’m sure the 812 has vastly superior handling.

Joel Schembri “Drivers” value lots of things. Many people value noise or character above anything else - look at the new 718 Porsches; better in every measurable way with at least equal steering feel to their predecessors but unloved in comparison. I wouldn’t say no to either of them but I think realistically they are aiming at different targets. The more natural feel and the sheer torque of the Aston I’m sure would be fantastic, and those looks! But, the sensational V12 and searing noise it makes coupled with the fact that the 812 may be the last naturally aspirated Ferrari V12 may just tempt me that way. All that said I categorically can’t afford either so it’s a moot point - if my numbers come up I’d likely have both, as I’m sure many buyers actually will.

One of my best memories was on the Rossfeldstrasse. I was on a roadtrip with a close friend. We had lunch and left Munich in the afternoon for the drive down to Berchtesgaden. Neither of us had any idea what to do, other than to check out the Eagles Nest the following day. So we checked in to our gasthaus and went for a drive. Then we found this road, and obviously we had to go explore it. We spend a good couple of hours driving, walking and just looking at the scenery. No cars, no people, no noise (except for some cowbells). Just before sunset we pulled over to some benches over-looking a valley and ate our leftover pizzas. Probably the best dinner I have had. Then a local biker stopped and came to us amazed that we had driven all the way from Northern Europe. He even wanted a picture as proof :D. That road was also the turning point of our roadtrip and the start of a 2800km drive back home(through the Ring of course).
