Aston Origin - Detailed Review and Microphone Comparisons

After using this microphone with a variety of instruments and vocal sources, to my ears it has a different character depending on the frequencies and dynamics of the source. I kept finding myself surprised by how it sounded. For me, this is one to use when you are looking for a specific tone as opposed to an everyday go to option. It does however have one of the best build qualities i have seen at this or any price point. Let me know if you agree or heard something different!

Great video, I bought one a few days ago and you had the best detailed video of the mic, so thank you. However I wish you would’ve given more detail bout the switches on the mic and when it would be good to use them.

Thanks and I appreciate the suggestion on the onboard switches! I definitely can expand on use cases for controls moving forward. For the Origin, the -10dB pad switch is helpful to prevent overloading when recording loud sources, particularly those with wide transients. Max SPL is 127dB, which is good, but it is possible to exceed that with extreme transients. Recording some percussion instruments, guitar cabinets, and even brass instruments are good examples. The 80Hz high pass (low cut) filter can be helpful to reduce room / building noise and rumble as well as to tame bass heavy sources that become boomy. Low cut have be applied artistically as well, but these are a few of the most common applications. Hope this helps out!

I bailed on my DBX 286 for a Behringer UV1 which is must better and has a USB connection. I find the Origin to be my go to mic over the MK4, NT2, ATH 2030, SM7B and many others. You can't go wrong with this mic for VoiceOver/YT.

Right, the UV1 has everything the DBX has including USB, headphone out, and on/off switch. The DBX is very old technology, originally for broadcast. I have the USA made version 1...great in it's day!

Do you use a cloud lifter with it?

No, the Origin is a condenser microphone (uses phantom power) and the Cloudlifter is for dynamic microphones only. Condenser microphones typically output a stronger signal vs dynamic microphones and therefore mic boosters generally not required. Hope this helps out.
