Thank you so much for this video! I'm glad you liked the mic! A lot of my friends will be, too. My Origin did not come with a shock mount, so yes that's an aftermarket one. There is one made specifically for it, but it's close to $100 USD. The one I have on it was the one recommended to me by Sweetwater, but it's a REALLY tight fit. If you have the extra money and you like the origin, I'd recommend getting the one made for it, but that one works alright if you don't want to spend the extra money. Again, thank you so much for making this!

Of all the mics I've heard you test (which isn't all of them but still) I think the Origin complements your voice the best. When you were equidistant from the two and switched between them, I feel like the CAD better represented the qualities of your voice, but the Origin made me feel like I was in the room with you and you were talking to me in person rather than through a video on the internet. I liked that more. I did hear some slight sound differences when you switched between them and literally like a minute before you played both mics together to show the phase cancellation I thought that they would probably do something like that if you were to do that. Nice to know we were on the same page there.

Your Voice so far has been the best with the ORIGIN I have thought others sounded a bit METALIC or a slight Ting to it. I thought maybe it was in my head due to the Metal frame lol Sounds great for you

I own the Spirit and it's a wonderful mic. Great for Home Musicians / Project Studios. It did suck that they separated their partnership with Rycote that was the original shock mounts they used. I did a lot of trail and error on right mounts. But, the Rycote Invision USM is the best I've used.

Both mics sound really good to me! I'm getting old (51) and have listened to a lot of loud music and sounds over the years, so my hearing can't pick up much of a difference between the two. I did see what you are saying about the cancellation between the two though and agree with you on that. Once again, Great Video!

Funny how you JUST tested this microphone. I came across it while looking for a new kind of shock mount, and I liked how it looked, it's not crazy expensive, and I wanted to see if you had tested it or not. And you have, uploaded today. Crazy. In Norway now, the Origin is around the 2100 NOK, while the E100S is about 7500 NOK, so the price difference is quite significant here.

Definitely prefer the CAD. This comparison reinforced for me what I believed I heard in a couple of others, which is that although the Aston has an apparent frequency response similar to the E100s, and others like the MKH416 that include a mild “presence boost,” the CAD is more accurate, meaning less harmonic distortion, particularly in the upper midrange. I just feel like the waveform is being ‘fuzzied’ a little, adding the slightest bit of crackle to that segment of its range. It’s not as evident in spoken-word vocals (the other comparisons where I heard this effect were recording acoustic guitar), but I wouldn’t want the Aston for an “unplugged” recording, for example. But I’m being super-picky. As always, thanks for the great and fair shoot-out!

@EU_DHD 6 жыл бұрын
I would have written something similar, but not as well-worded. I feel like the low mids sound a bit smoother on the CAD and the Aston, while being somewhat clearer, has something to the sound that I don't like when compared to the CAD. That said, I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference without either having them side to side like this or having a long time to analyse the sound. If someone were to ask me what the Aston sounds like, I would probably say something along "sort of like the CAD e100s but not as bassy and not as smooth to the ears".

Thank you for your kind words, but really, you did just fine! (I have the advantage of being a professional engineer and technical writer.) The difference is that I tried to put it in measurable terms (geek that I am!), but what you wrote is perhaps more subjective. That's fine! Subjective is what you have to live with! :-)

What a great comparison! The E100s is still the gold standard IMO, with what feels like a more accurate representation of your true voice. However the Aston definitely holds its own, with slightly metallic undertones - but in a good way. Seems like a character trait of the microphone body. Both really great, and an enjoyable review as always ⚡️⚡️

The Aston sounds thinner because it doesn't render the low end that soft and organic. It sounds sharper and raspier. The E100S works better with your voice in my opinion.

Thank you so much for the video Mike. I literally just came across the Aston Origin like 2 days ago and what do you know, I come to my favorite VO channel and you've uploaded a video for it. AWESOME! Now I am seriously considering this mic. I still very much like the E100s but between the stress of wondering if CAD has it's QC issues under control and waiting for Massdrop to have the mic go live, this may be the next best alternative and for $100 less to boot. It's something to think on anyway. By the way, I am curious, what did you think of the Aston's self-noise? 18dba seems a bit high to me but I really don't know a lot about mic's yet, just the basics I've learned from watching your channel. Thanks again.

Thanks for another great video Mike! This is my first time being exposed to the Aston line of mics, definitely a unique looking great sounding mic! Would you ever be able to do a video where you could give tips on mic techniques for certain kind of mics, to avoid things like plosives etc. I work with a lot of voice talents that are incredible, but I think their mic technique could use some work, and I wanted to know what you as a voice over artist would tell them to do to get the best take possible.

Hey! I like oranges, no matter where they are from. Great comparison of the two. Is this the first youve done phasing between mics? It would have been neat to see the frequency chart and compare their similarities. The Origin did have a very good sound and for the price, I'd have to say I'd recommend it for any beginning VO with no hesitation... Based on price and how you've presented it here.

Thanks for your comparison between these mics. Just one point. With super or hyper cardiod mics the pickup pattern is not quite what you were saying. With a standard cardiod the mic rejects more from the rear than with the super or hyper cardiod, but the hyper rejects more from the sides, particularly from 60 degrees. Hope you don't mind me pointing that out.

That amount of phase cancellation between 2 mics is crazy. I'd assume the largest difference between their sound is probably the pickup pattern. I actually returned my E100s because the pattern wasn't working for me. I might have to purchase an Origin now.
