It’s funny, I didn’t realize how much the press conferences mattered to me. I feel so much better after hearing Potter’s first. After JLo’s first presser, my spirits sank. My biggest hope for this game tomorrow is to see the player’s tails back up. When a player gets subbed that they don’t look disgusted and mystified. If I see the players looking hopeful and lifted, I’ll be optimistic for the rest of the season.

I’d go 4-1-4-1: Areola (sweeper role) AWB Todibo/Mav Kilman Emerson Alvarez (with Emerson coming forward to support) Kudus Paqueta Soucek Summerville Fullkrug So basically a 0-4-2-4-1 in attack, with Areola becoming a centre back and Kilman going left when Emerson goes forward to support the midfield. That would enable us to do the ‘Potter square’ in the centre with four midfielders.

We have to win chaps - if we lose we don’t have a meaningful game until the new season starts in August. By my maths we would need 11 wins, 4 draws and 3 defeats in our last 18 games to get to 60pts and have a chance of Europe. That’s almost impossible- so the league campaign is over, dead rubber games. My only disappointment is Bowen missing, not only the player but the captain. Presumably Soucek will remain captain and IMO it will me a massive job for this game for him to be the leader because there is going to be an element of the players having to get on and figure things out for themselves and it's a wonderful opportunity for them to express themselves without any shackles

As well as the new manager bounce, it also gives us another possible advantage. There's plenty of data on what an Emery Villa team plays like. There's 0 on what a Potter West Ham looks like. Obviously hasn't had enough time for wholesale changes, but if he can take advantage of them not knowing how we're going to play, and render some Aston Villa's prep against what was going to be a JL team useless, that could do some damage.

But also don't forget that all the stones he has to turn over are the best part of two years old, so nobody really has a clue how Potter may have evolved his ethos whilst he's been out the game. Don't get me wrong, I think that the game has come far too soon after the appointment for him to perform any tactical miracles. It must make it harder to prepare against though, which is a small positive for us. After the last few months of dross, I'll happily take that 😂

To not change anything or very little will just confuse everyone. International teams only have a few training sessions. The players will have had it easy this week so a double session on Thursday will not be a problem. Friday ,Flip board presentation and talking tactics,these are all internationals so they have much more of an idea than our previous teams.

I’m very happy. I thought Lopetegui would survive much longer. I’m optimistic about Potter as long as he can manage the petulant ones. Potter knows what tactics are, he’s heard of set plays, he wants balance. I have much more hope. I’m not expecting to win on Friday, but those players better give their best. The video shows how you can put them in an order to complete a circle, using each team only once, that demonstrates the preceding team beat the following team, which best the team that follows them etc etc, all the way around to the 20th team which beat the 1st...
