Agreed. I’m actually glad Kit Connor & the gang are continuing this story, because in doing so, they are actually putting a spotlight 🔦 on those “fans” who pressured him. All of Nick’s stress responses are probably very similar to what Kit went through. Hopefully some of those aggressive “fans” will see what they did was totally out of line… that they were, in fact, just as bad as Nick’s brother David. UGHHH.

That's why the novels were so successful, they have this wonderful journey from light hearted and innocence romance to more serious matters being tackled, without loosing the things that matter out of sight.

I don't know if you guys know this, but after Season 1 came out, Kit Connor (our beloved Nick) was harrassed by the "fans" of the show for months, they accused him of queerbaiting (wtf?) and basically forced him to come out as bisexual on Twitter. Before that, he'd always said he was secure in his sexuality and didn't want to ever put a label on it publicly. But these "fans" completely missed the point of the show and harrassed an 18 YEAR OLD (he's currently 19!) to out himself in front of the whole world It was a huge deal, the cast and writers supported and defended him, the official Netflix Twitter account even changed its description to "We love you, Kit Connor" I don't know how much of the script for Season 2 had already been written, but maybe the fact that Charlie, Nick’s mom, the rugby coach keep reassuring Nick that he owes nobody this information about himself is a way to reiterate the writers’ support for Kit, and to call out the horrible “fans” that hurt him like this I feel like this whole season but this episode in particular really reflected what Kit must have felt in real life Or maybe the whole Season had already been written and I’m just delulu. But anyways, I imagine it must have felt nice for Kit to hear those things, see them on screen and experience them. I hope he felt validated and in a sense, vindicated Another sad tidbit is that the reason why Kit’s body is so different in S2 compared to S1 (Kit looked about 14 in S1 lol) is that “fans” kept comparing him to how Nick is in the comics (where he is a giant, much bigger than Charlie) so Kit felt pressured to start working out even more to live up to that :( This boy is only 19…

Isn't it great, how Heartstopper works? More than 6 millions off views in the first week! It's a show about the life. And it's special to me that they haven't got to use special effects, parties with drugs and alcohol or sex-scenes or extraordinary dramas. And in the same time Heartstopper doesn't tell a unrealistic sweet romance, where aren't issues. Great reaction, I love how you discuss about it!

Linear TV shows would kill for 6 million views. This is why I love streaming services, they have the advantage to take the time, effort and money into producing drama that doesn't have to be rushed, or has to act within the norms of regular linear TV. This is why I adore Heartstopper. Main reason why last year I signed up to Netflix.

Nick's first "Charlie-like alternate reality moment": Season 1 Ep 4 Secret. On the rugby pitch, Charlie has been taken down by #14 and is lying in the mud, in the rain, shaking and alone. Nick is literally and visually STUCK between Charlie's friends and Nick's "friends" who are shown on either side of Nick who's staring at Charlie, stunned and horrified that he's probably hurt and it's "all Nick's fault" for getting him into rugby in the first place [even if he didn't quite realize what his true motivation was at the time as even before the kiss he's already saying, to Charile, that he just likes "being" with him and even his Mum has noticed that he's more himself when he's around Charlie, not like his "other" friends]. This is one of the strongest visual images showing Nick's quandary. And he replays the scene the morning after the kiss in Charlie's front hall where he asks if they can keep it a secret "at school" [which the school rugby team is obviously an extension of, perhaps the most intense extension of all as the rugby lads constitute the majority of Nick's friend group and are the actual foundation of his title as "the rugby king"]. In Nick's alternate version, Charlie says yes, but grudgingly. But in our objective view of that moment in the hallway, just before Char gives Nick the Ukraine umbrella, symbolizing that they are now the two halves of the whole as Nick's color is blue and Charlie's is yellow, Charlie is measured but fully agreeing, not in the least grudging. S1E4 is where we first see that Nick replays things in his head and not necessarily accurately but rather influenced by the emotions, especially guilt, he's feeling at the moment. He too has the voice in the back of his head telling him he's shit. Perhaps installed by his big brother David, perhaps Dad, perhaps both and it's when he's in the lovely caring, accepting space given to him by his mother Sarah [everyone's fav mother Liv Coleman], that he's able to rationally assess what's going on both inside and outside of himself.

Episode 3 was a very emotional episode. I like how they built up the first date between Elle and Tao, as I just felt Tao just wasn't right on the date. I had a bad feeling it wouldn't go well, and I was right. The pressure Nick felt on coming out to his friends is exactly how I felt at that age. You just want everyone to know, so this huge weight could be lifted off your shoulders, but it was always trying to find the right moment. I know how he feels there.

Re: "not very good at physical interaction" ~ Whereas Nick is absolutely excellent at casual physical interactions. Think of season 1, Ep 1. He pats Charlie on the back in the locker room, he gives Char's arm a squeeze after the Ben "piss off". He touches his hair after the haircut, can hardly look at the drums when he's sharing the stool with Charlie, he nearly holds his hand when the sparks first fly and he checks to see if that's a real thing and his proper gay crisis begins. And then he hugs him for actually 14 seconds [not 10 as Charlie says but that's just because time sorta stopped for him right then] after telling him that he looks so cuddly like that and can't even look at him again before he leaves. He's really got it bad and that's very, very good. And he takes Char's hand when he's told that Ben got pushed into a wall and has probably gotten the message [landshark, NO, he didn't] and he uses it to drag Char through the crowd looking for someplace "quieter". And ALL of those things make Charlie brave enough to ask Nick 7 questions that lead to a kiss, but before Nick answers the last one, Charlie reaches out and touches Nick's hand. Sparks fly. That's talking to Nick in Nick's love language, physical touch [or intimacy expressed as physical touch because Nick is actually rather extraordinarily in touch with his feelings and able to express them for a 16 year old]. Charlie's is probably "service", being "useful or helpful". And these themes extend into S2, but I don't want to spoil any surprises!

I love mini-golf as a first date! Or at an ice-skating or roller-skating rink! Picnics are great too (as long as my allergies aren't acting up), but can be a little too intimate sometimes, depending on the person and situation. I'm all for more casual first dates, as opposed to "dinner and a movie," or something, and tend to prefer when there's other people around for some reason... not like a club or anything, but I guess having other people around to potentially interact with just gives that extra little sense of security, so that I don't feel as much pressure or awkwardness, and can have those genuine moments of connection develop more organically between my date and I. Idk if that makes sense. Bowling is a great double or triple date as well, because it's just hella fun lol

I have so many friends who are LGBTQ+ and have seen just how much of an impact coming out can be, be it a positive or negative experience and every one of them that's watched Heartstopper have all said the same sort of thing, that they wished they'd had a show like it when they were figuring themselves out so that they could see that actually, they didn't owe anyone anything when it came to their sexuality. ❤

ik there's a good chance nick genuinely did have heatstroke or smthn like his mum said, but i'm one of those people who experiences anxiety as a physical symptom - sometimes i can tell i'm anxious, but other times i just feel genuinely physically unwell and only figure it out once i'm away from the stressor and start feeling better. i know that's likely not what was intended here, but it made me feel kinda seen anyway - i've definitely panicked in similar ways to nick and had to go home after to feel ok again also, on the rugby coach - i LOVED that scene! the first person outside of my close friends and a few family members to find out i'm trans was my spanish teacher. he just hummed, nodded, then asked who knew. i told him the names of my friends that knew, and he said "so i shouldn't say anything to the other teachers, then? okay." and moved on. that was it. he always called me by my name and pronouns in class (my class knew already by then) but never ever outed me, and only indicated that he knew already to the other teachers when i changed my name on the system. he was my favourite teacher for a million reasons, but that was one that rlly stuck w me. if mr deberque happens to ever read this (which i doubt, but ynever know) - thank you, so much! i will genuinely never forget how safe that made me feel.

When at the end Charlie tells Nick that he wants people to know he is his boyfriend it is clear that Nick has already fallen asleep in his arms, exhausted by the strain of the day and relieved that the self-imposed pressure to come out has been taken off by an act of loving generosity. Also i was so happy and proud of Charlie that he said his wish is to being open as a couple. I am so proud because Charlie prioritizes his needs and doesn't shut up about it. I think that is a step forward for Charlie because he needs to learn that it is totally okay to talk about your wishes although it is difficult. ❤ And could it be that Nick falls asleep while Charlie was talking about the fact that he wants to be an open couple? if yes, then damn, Charlie said something really important. 💀(but i am sure Nick is aware of that so it isn't that bad.)
