To elaborate on the whole "painting tax write-off," basically the way it goes is that you commission an artist to create a painting for you. Then you get an appraiser to rate the painting at a really high price, then you donate the painting to a business, and they'll take the painting's perceived value as a monetary donation, thus being a write-off. Edit: Oh, someone actually explained it at 35:36.

@TheDiner50 Жыл бұрын
Give kudos to Ruin is like giving kudos to a pizza maker that they learned how to prepare food that is used when making the pizza. And still Ruin is far less interesting. So really even if SB was half baked and shit. It at least at the end of the day far more interesting then whatever PopyGo or whatever else horrible. And the SB pizza you can actually bake in your own oven and find something enjoyable out of the pizza. If Steel Wool only learned to make child's games with ZERO going for it? I mean dam. SB was lost potential and a joke of a messy and broken game development. But Ruin has the problem of being lazy and AR gimmick bs. And by Lazy I mean just in the story and creativity. SB had signs of being a good game in there. Ruin is just playing it safe and relying completely on map makers making the map into a "ruin" variant of SB. It was brave to add that teleporting between parts of the map and it working as well as it dose. Honestly did not see that coming. It worked very well for what it is. Story and everything else? Like kudos for doing your job? Really? And putting child safety barriers and challenges everywhere? Na. Story and gameplay is far worse then SB. HOW do they manage to do that and deserve kudos? If only SB had knife Vanny and a proper reworking of the story and all. It seems very obvious that SB we got was not the original story plan. And the horrible handling of the open world questing and bugs... I mean. What a lost potential of a game.

Pro tip, in relation to the fly: flies perceive time differently than we do. They're really good at detecting fast motion, but not so much slow motion. The best way to sneak up on them to swat them is to VERY SLOWLY move your hand/swatter/etc. as close to them as possible, THEN quickly swat them. Doesn't work every time, if your hand/swatter/etc. creates a sudden enough shadow over them while you're closing in, they'll fly away, but I've had fairly good luck with doing it that way. I don't normally endorse killing insects just because but house flies... yeah that's fine lol

I said this on one of Spiff's first Ruin vids, but that exact process is still a very good sign. Most games get thoroughly demolished eventually, but the problem with SB was that people were destroying it on accident within minutes of playing. As long as the bugs are mostly only exploitable by skilled players *trying* to break the game (like this one barring the MatPat Incident as I've not heard of any other skip so easy), I'll say I'm happy with that aspect of Steel Wool's work here.

mentioning group projects made me relive a "fun" memory I took a course called "software development using Unity" so essentially making a game in the Unity engine we have around 7 months for the project and after 2 weeks of debating what we (a 7 person team) should do that was plagued with at least one person going "I don't want to do that" for any given idea we landed on a side scrolling shooter/platformer everyone gets assigned a part and we split up, no major progress reports and everyone assumes the others are diligently working on their assigned stuff. one girl was assigned to music, one guy made models etc. and my job was to also assemble all the parts I got sent so the 7 months are almost over, we have only 3 days until we have to present the project and I still haven't gotten a single thing from anyone. after asking around it became clear that nobody except me and the music girl had done anything for the project. So I had 2.5 days to make a Unity game in a genre I don't particularly like (but to be fair also don't hold any grudges against) to the level of quality you'd expect from a 7 month project. from scratch. alone. not fun I slept maybe 4 hours in that time and definitely drank too many energy drinks but eventually somehow got something together. nothing good but it was playable. kind of also the music I was sent was in a file format Unity wouldn't accept and I didn't recognize it so couldn't convert it, and the girl responsible couldn't export in any other format, so I also had to do music for the game. I do not know a single thing about music in the end I drove to present the project by car after getting way too little sleep, definitely not a good idea, but we had to present it I didn't even have time to properly build the game into an exe because I had to polish the code as much as humanly possible so it was presented by playing inside the Unity editor and also had to be handed in to the professor in this state after presenting we were asked to hand in a file detailing who did what work on the project by the following week. since you needed a good grade in this project work to pass the year (there's genuinely no way around this, you absolutely NEED that grade otherwise you get to do the year again) I split all of my work up into sections and assigned them to the other people so everyone would get at least a passing grade I ended up getting the least points out of all the participants (but enough to pass) still mad about that one despite it happening 4,5 years ago and I likely will never let that go not what I would call a "fun experience"

35:00 for those of you wondering why rich people buy paintings, it is not a tax write off. Banks have a cap on how much money you can put into them (100k or something like that, i can’t remember) so to protect their assets rich folks will buy insanely expensive paintings and either lock them up in a cabinet somewhere or loan the paintings to a museum/art gallery as a sort of wallet for their abundant riches (museums/art galleries are nice because they upkeep the paintings and keep them looking perfect and prevent them from being stolen). It also puts the rich person in a lower tax bracket as they have “less” money. It’s a really good investment for them as some paintings will gain value over time, thus giving them a higher net worth.

The bots can get you pretty far in GTFO but past most C1 levels, you’ll probably need a full squad of people. Exceptions include R1 since that one is pretty tame, and there are a few levels where they’re actually not too bad to solo by yourself or with bots. A lot of levels in R5, and R7 need a full squad or at least three people. Once you get to C1 in those rundowns, you usually need a full team.

I remember hearing someone else describe the painting thing. It works better if you, the artist, and an art appraiser all work together. The process goes something like this: Artist makes a $10 painting with leftover paints in their garage. You, the rich businessman, buy that painting for $200. You "hire" an art appraiser to value the painting at something ludicrous, like $2,000,000. This costs you, say, $2,000. You donate the "$2,000,000" painting to the local museum, and you get to write that off on your taxes. The artist turned $10 into $200; the appraiser gets a kickback from the evaluation; and you get to save $2m after spending $2,200. Everyone wins! And that's why modern art is a thing.

Like, you use a legitimate business to mask the earnings of your illegitimate side hustle, _then_ use the painting to make the IRS not care either way. it also just doesn't happen as often as people think it does, you need a name behind you to pull off the old reliable. My woodblock and stone printmaking prints might get appraised at around 1k, finding an appraiser to risk their livelihood isn't that easy. And you don't donate it to a museum, you donate it to a COLLECTION, which could just be someones garage. It's a risky scheme though and has to be carefully executed, airtight. Big name artist, big name appraisal company, big name collection that cycles regularly. It's a real legal loophole because it's not always just money laundering, you need to make it look as legit as possible and when you get to that point it's just... a genuine art donation lol.

14:05 I never thought I would hear about this game ever again. Nice to know about more people who have played it. I never played, but only know if it because someone I knew was playing it and I was watching it. So cool.

1:01:18 As a wise man once said: "Water is _clear._ The only time water is blue is when there's billions of tons of it and it's _all in the one spot._ And then it's got all sorts of shit in it. Like salt, and *SHARKS.* _...Blue means SHARKS IN IT!_ Don't eat that, it's got *_SHARKS IN IT!"_*

the song that plays at 1:03:00 is the instrumental version of a song named "i hate the world and everything in it", felt like it was a fitting title for the depression arc lol

1:00:00 i know this is totally random, but speaking to the color of water, on the pacific coast of the americas, specifically in the PNW our water is an emerald green, its hard to see in photos but when you live here 24/7 you'd wish it was as clear and nice as the bahamas water

15:38 apart from ocarina of time. Me and my siblings skipped every piece of dialogue but managed to get to adult link before I can't remember what happened next. It took about 3 months to beat queen ghoma and I was so proud when I did it. Although I did get stuck instantly in pretty much all the other zelda games I played.

In the speedrun lore, Cassie HATES Roxy and thats why she never hesitates to deactivate her despite not being told. She cries at the end because she couldn’t find Giga Monty, her favorite animatronic

1:28:51 never pay for college textbooks. Almost all of them are available online for free and the ones that aren't can be rented so much cheaper. Older versions have a good chance to be nearly identical to newer versions if its only a couple years old. Had a professor that required use to buy a book he wrote. Probably the most scummiest things ive had a professor do. Was a total dick as well

did you know the brazil ending is probably called that, not because of jokes, but because of a movie by the same name! the movie, basically, goes like this: so theres a guy who has a fantasy world he escapes to when stressed but is going throught tons of situations and at the end, he escapes into his mind for probably the last time. theres a video explaining it in better detail...

I always think of Security Breach as the silly goofy glitch game that's more of a sandbox than anything and can be beaten in 5 minutes, so it always floors me when I remember that its the single largest game (I think) in an incredibly large franchise that still has more problems than the average 90s console game that probably only had 2 updates and a single playtest.
I think its nice to have a face appear in the corner when spiff talks outside of the stream

I love how you make your videos, I always liked you voice + VOD + music style of video but now it's just so much better, the icon to tell you are talking the musics the montage everything is so much better and I love it ! I love speedrunning content in general but I think you're one of the few people on Internet that knows how to make a good video on speedrunning content and that is so refreshing !

I got stuck in the Lakebed Temple as a kid because there was a small underwater maze I kept getting lost in. And as a kid, whenever I'd get stuck on a hard part in games, instead of trying to solve the problem and push past it, I'd just restart the game and play through the whole game up to the point I had gotten stuck, then repeat the process. People say TP's intro is too long, and thinking on it I'd agree, but I've played through that intro so many times it means absolutely nothing to me lmao.

35:11 i believe you hire an in house painter to make a painting, then hire an in house appraiser to appraise it as some ludicrous amount of money, and then donate it to a museum to deduct that from your taxes
@enderkatze6129 Жыл бұрын
35:30 Actually, to evade taxes via paintings, you: Commision a painting. (~1.000$?) Have it evaluated at your net Worth Donate the painting to a Museum Resultingly, you pay No taxes because you technically donated your entire worth

hey spiff! im a huge CSGO fan (~4.3k hours) and I have some recommendations to have fun! like you said, competitive gets really sweaty, but there are a bunch of community servers that are purely for fun. there's a hundred unique, player-made gamemodes hosted on thousands of servers. Here's a list of rly popular gamemodes: zombies, koth, hns (hide and seek), 1v1s, retakes (1v1s and retakes are really good for building skills for comp as well, and are probably the sweatiest of the comm. servers), flying scoutsmen (super low gravity, only Scouts and Knives are allowed. also my fave♥), death run (rly fun), arms race, tdm/dm, prop hunt (another fave), jail break (depending on server, either rly fun or rly toxic :/ ), surfing, deags only, awp only (some are noscopes only with autobhop and other movement changes), bhop (normally player-made maps that require you to bhop around obstacles thru a course), casual/comp games hosted on community maps, kz (movement gamemode, only rly for players interested in honing skills, but valuable teaching/guide), etc etc sorry its such a long comment, im super passionate about the community scene for CS and want to share my experience! if you don't know how to access community servers, there's a button on the main menu called Community Servers, and it'll open up a browser that will be overwhelming at first. but you'll figure out how to search and narrow down servers with time. your friends will also be able to join you on the servers by either copying and pasting the server's ip or going thru steam/csgo friends list and clicking "Join Friend's Game". love ur vids

With how ADAMANT you are that ruin requires you to do all chapters because of the way the game is divided up, I just can't help but feel that there will be found a way to corrupt the loading trigger at the end of chapter 1 to take you straight to chapter 9.

15:50 The worst part of Twilight Princess is that you have to catch that fish twice because the first one goes into your journal instead of giving it to the cat. Nowhere does the game tell you this. Otherwise great game, 10/10 do recommend.

I’m only at the very beginning of this video, but I wanna point out hell The Game theorist unintentionally skipped the most lore filled chapter with the mask, so that is a speed running strategy, just trying to figure out how to replicate that bug

At 21:12, Where there was just the void. In my first playthrough of the game, getting to the daycare. Where the screen disappears when you put the mask on, the ar world would always load in daycare, but the real world did not load in like 13 or so times. Everytime I took the mask off, I teleport above, there to be nothing up there, and I fall back down and get stuck in the ar world because if I put the mask on, I would teleport under the ar world and fall infinity or the game crashed. But the weirdest part is that I would do the same thing and it just loads fine now. I don't know what I did, or what, but I find it funny that other KZbins end up finding ways to skip areas of game, where as I end up finding ways to ether break games to crash or just not work right.
