I’ve heard of this before; part of the reason that it repeats is that the brain has difficulty rationalizing why it’s attracted to it (creating a feedback loop); it’s similar to hearing a foreign language and trying to make sense of the words. I’ve been told that it helps if you talk to a musician and explain your emotional response- Have them explain in technical terms how a melody is constructed, and corroborate that emotional reaction. That helps “translate” the melody in the brain. Worth a shot, I guess.

@SuperBeastlyMario3 ай бұрын
For me I've noticed it's similar. I figured it might be something to do with my autism but I didn't rly know. Thing is I'll get those really catchy, awful pop songs stuck in my head and I'll just play one part of that on loop for like half an hour at a time, then it'll change to another one, and it'll just keep going like that constantly, to the point I feel like I'm going completely insane. That one song that's like "movin my hips like yeah" really irritates me for that reason recently cuz my family love songs like that on their playlists. I try to explain this to them and they think I'm just being stupid when I explain it, and then I feel stupid explaining it back to myself. But in my head I know I hate it to a maddening degree. It defo is like first world problems but sometimes I can't hear my own thoughts over it. It's like that one Regular Show episode with the Summer Time tape for visual representation. I'd say it's dialed up but you can't really out crazy Regular Show. Though they do say to just drown it out with another catchy song in that episode, so in future I'll prolly just do that but with songs I actually enjoy.

@@SuperBeastlyMario In autism it's usually echolalia! Echolalia is a pretty broad term but it describes a lot of behaviours/autism symptoms that boil down to "brain repeat thing" I'll get a song stuck in my head for days, but like...a very small maddening portion of it. It drives me NUTS. The looping song going on and on and on can drown out important thoughts I actually need to focus on.
@Klaxynd3 ай бұрын
@@Isissa125Yeah I have that too. I figured it had something to do with my ASD but never bothered looking it up (because I’m usually looking up a bajillion other things… 😂). The thing is, for me it’s usually a part of a song that I either started off liking but grew to hate, or a part of a song that has stereotypical catchiness that I wasn’t sure if I liked before but hate after it gets stuck. Like “Keep on… with the force don’t stop. Don’t stop ‘till you get enough!” got stuck in my head for over 2 1/2 hours straight once. It was just that one part of the song too. Or more recently, “You had a bad day. You’re taking one down, you sing a sad song just to turn it around…” was stuck in my head during a funeral of all things. I tried to not hum the song because I didn’t want to seem like I was mocking the family of the deceased, and I had to make sure that I was paying attention to what was being said. I was worried that I looked annoyed or something because I was actually annoyed at the song snippet being stuck in my head. And every time I think a song is gone from my head, I start to wonder, “What _was_ that song that was stuck in my head?” and then a minute or two later it’s stuck there again. I think it may be related to me not forgetting events as easily as a neurotypical person (which is a whole other can of worms that I won’t get into right now).

And a PS5 isn’t able to be modified in any way. There’s no real customization. THAT is where the differences lie. THEN there’s the fact that through alternate means, you can have PS3 backwards compatibility as emulation improves. oh my gosh, i feel so seen. i've had songs stuck in my head for a week or two at a time before and it drives me ABSOLUTELY. CRAZY. i've never had it to the extent of SSS, but i've struggled to sleep for so many nights because my brain has pumped up the volume on specifically one snippet of a song it decided to play on loop

Wow... I really wasn't prepared for this kind of real talk. I totally get you. I haven't even played the game because I don't have a PS5 but I really love watching other people play this game because it's sooo good. And I also have this song stuck in my head, even while waking up like you've described. I didn't know there's the term stuck song syndrome. So, thanks for pointing that out. For me ear worms sometimes even get so bad that I get physically nauseous because I need to repeat a song in my head so many times. Like you said at some point it really isn't fun anymore even if the song is great 😥

If a diner full of grown men can be pushed to the breaking point by just seven plays of What's New Pussycat, then I do NOT want to hear a single song for a whole day, let alone a whole week. Also, I hope no one ever has to spend all of December with All I Want For Christmas Is You on loop in their heads.

This is a good example of mental struggle and you explained it really well. I'm sorry for what you're going through cuz that is a lot. It sounds silly based on the topic, but that kind of obsessive feeling that can't be controlled is a real thing and is really hard. I know you have lived with It your whole life but hopefully it will get better, Arlo.

... I get this SSS. I identified with everything you said in that portion. Including the song continuing to play the moment you regain consciousness. And ESPECIALLY where you have a snippet where it's one song that sounds like it leads into a different song, and it's only that pseudo transition... That happens like once a month, even if that kind is only for a day or two, as opposed to a week. Oftentimes I will listen to the song on loop. But that usually means I'm listening to one song on loop for several days in a row. I don't know if it actually helps.
@MikalEdmunds3 ай бұрын
So I have the complete opposite “problem.” Thing is, I get way too hyper fixated on certain songs or even the snippets you mentioned, and will just listen to that on repeat. 1 year of Pokey Means Business on loop and the part where the double bass kicks in still has me addicted 💀

I recommend that advice of listening to the song on loop. A while back i had a song hard stuck in my head. So i played it on loop for maybe 6ish hours. Eventually the songs lose their luster when you hear it enough times. I didnt even ruin the song for me surprisingly, just made it stop playing in my head

Arlo is teaching me so many things. Stuck Song Syndrome sounds amazingly brutal. I usually need a song or video going but to wake up to a song for a week straight is a few steps above. I don't have it but this video makes me wonder if I need to be checked. He also reminded me I'm a terrible person because he said the song is likely to start because of stress so my mind crafted the image of a guy getting kicked in the nuts and the Mario 64 Circus music starts playing in his head.

Last time this happened to me was a song that was popular on TikTok. It sounds silly, but no, the song was IN my brain for days, and I remember getting so frustrated that I couldn't go 5 minutes without humming it again. It started to make me feel sick, just thinking about the song. "I hopped, into a coffee shop, and then my jaw dropped in shock when I saw a girl who had cool pants..." That song, no joke

whenever i get a song stuck in my head, especially if it's a song i don't particularly like, sometimes i feel like there's a certain song you can replace it with that just stays in there perfectly without the other song coming back. idk if that's even something other people experience, but for me that song is come sail away by styx

Last week, I had been dealing with a lot of stress in areas of my life so I was listening to one of my favorite band's new songs and one or two started to get stuck in my head. When I went to work for two days, the songs intensified while I was under a lot more stress dealing with customers and felt like not only was I not able to think clearly because everything going on at once but the songs that I was jamming to before were just repeating in my mind at a rapid and repetitive pace that I could not turn off. By time I went to bed to time I woke up the next morning, they were still playing in my head. I have been diagnosed with OCD with possible Autism symptoms by my therapist. It's never that the song is annoying or repetitive in itself, it just starts repeating as a way my mind starts to cope with the influx of information that is coming at me at once.

Thanks. Hearing this has made me realise I need to seek medical advice on OCD and/or ADHD, have had suspicions for many years but never done anything about it. The music thing too. inhave it all the time. I make music for my channel. I have no idea if this is good therapy or exacerbating the issue 🤷♂️

I had no idea that this could be a symptom of OCD... I have ADHD and also always tend to have songs stuck in my mind. Like 9 out of 10 times, there is some song playing in my mind and that's fine. Many of my friends with ADHD have that too... But sometimes (and with increasing frequency in the last few years) it is just like you described. It's the last thing you think about before sleeping and the first thing that enters your mind in the morning and it sometimes seems like you cannot think of anything else and it is not fun at all.... I never heard anyone describing symptoms like that and I feel like I know that feeling so well...like..maybe I should talk to my doctor about that.... Man thank you for talking about these things. It may seem silly to talk about a tune from a video game being too catchy and driving you mad but honestly it is very validating to hear someone talking about it.

Hi Arlo, I've struggled with SSS before and dealt with it succesfully. Here's my advice on how I stop it. It's simple yet tough to do: 1. Put on some background ambient noises, like rain, rivers, etc. anything that's relaxing but doesn't claim so much attention that you can't sleep. And put a timer on it to stop after some time. 2. FORCE YOURSELF to listen to it. 3. At the same time focus on your breathing, take deep breaths and reaaaaallly listen to them. 4. Try to imagine yourself in a place that fits with the ambient sound you chose, and try to stay in that place, you can even pretend to dream. 5. If you get any intrusive thoughts while trying to do this or the song starts to come back, go back to step 2. If all goes well, you'll fall asleep without noticing it and you'll get better at it as you practice

I had a similar thing happen when I heard a song I found particularly memorable in this cartoon in 2022. It was so memorable that it non-stop would play in my head day and night, but the problem is that it was quite an emotional song, so... when this particular song was playing in my head day and night... I was sick at the time. I would lie down most days and all I'd hear is that damn sob story musical. It was impossible to get out of my head, it was utter torture. The song itself was good, but no matter how hard I tried to get it out of my head, I couldn't, and while I was sick, all it did was make me feel even worse. So yeah, the condition sounds silly and fun on paper, but no, it's actually a nightmare.

Not as insane as Nintendo fans abandoning Mario and pretending like if its 40 years of games have never existed only because Sony has made its own one. Resetera and many other communities are full of those people, and you can find some of theme in this video's comments as well...

Perhaps you didn't quite get it but Nintendo fans ditched Mario and the others and suddenly came to hate them only because Astro Bot became a thing. Unfortunately, I have no useful advice. The way I usually get a song to stop playing incessantly in my head is to get a new song to play incessantly in my head. If you're looking for a candidate for that, I recommend pretty much anything from the Sea of Stars soundtrack
@Brina212323 ай бұрын
Omgosh I had no clue this was an actual thing! I have not been diagnosed as having OCD but that's just another check mark that shows I might have it. 😅 Songs get stuck in my head all day and even when I go to sleep, I will still hear the song in my dreams! I will also immediately wake up & a song will be playing in my head before I've actually had a thought. Luckily, (I guess), I have a rotating playlist of sorts of new songs that I really like that just rotate throughout the day. It's almost like you're playing the same playlist on repeat but you have no control over it. I thought this was normal until I told my sister about it & she looked at me in amazement, like she's never had that happen before but I brushed it off. I guess it's not normal lol.

I should have listened to the rest of the video before writing my comment because you literally described everything I said 🤣 I guess that means I can super relate lol

i'm currently listening through the full Astro Bot OST as background music while I work. It's full of awesome catchy tunes, and by having it play through them all I don't get hung up on any specific one. I have no idea if that would work for someone with SSS though.

Yup. I get this too sometimes. Most recently with 'Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom'. I was listening to the soundtrack for like 1 week straight. The game and music was just so fun. The only way I've found to stop wanting to listen to it is time. Eventually you'll go from " i have to listen to this all the time" to " I'll keep it on my playlist and if it comes on, great. If it doesn't, that's okay too"

Its funny sitting here and listening as every point you bring up immediately links to me (ig I also have OCD when I never knew) I LOVE MUSIC, and I get the idea of just waking up, and then that one song you were hearing last night is just, t h e r e. Its worse whenever you are dealing with a bad mood, but your brain refuses to do much about it but play a song. I could be wrong, but what I do is when my brain starts thinking if a song a lot, I see it as that I want to sit and listen to it, so I just go, slap it on repeat for a while, and then I'm normally fine soon later and move on to other songs

Ohh, you are not alone in this. For me it's the song that plays in that cave with mushrooms where you find the last of us characters(it also plays somewhere in the desert area). It's been stuck in my head for days, can't stop listening to it and humming. It's so good.

Something I do when I can't get a song to stop playing in my head is to come up with lyrics for the song...the most dirty, screwed up, or weird lyrics I can think of. During Xmas season if I hear certain Xmas songs they won't leave my head until mid Feb. but coming up with messed up lyrics for the stupid songs forces my brain to hear the music in my head a different way because I'm focusing on lyrics and not just the sound of the song. It's kinda like trying to figure out a puzzle. Plus you'll usually make yourself laugh while doing it which kinda helps also. Last suggestion, turn the music to the game off and listen to an audio book with headphones while you play the game. That helps me sometimes too. Good luck dude.
