Honestly, this game is more like an mixed between Mario Galaxy and Kirby & Forgotten Land. You go from small planetoid, an rolling ball gimmick level, an power-up that's kinda similar to the Cloud Flower and have an Spin Attack just like the ones in Galaxy games. But you have basic movements, power-ups/transformation for accessibility like with Copy Ability & Mouthful Mode, rescueing the bots for more things to unlock like with Waddle Dees, an World Map with extra levels works similar to what Forgotten Land does and they even have an gutcha machine similar to Kirby's. Also the first & second boss has an tree & gorilla. Honestly, this game felt like an love letters to not just Sony, but other 3D platforming games it took inspirations from and it was very nice.

@@agreedboarart3188 I'd start with Gravity Rush 1, just to get the basics down. But if you change your mind on story, follow up GR1 with the Overture Animation here on KZbin. Since it bridges the story of both games. Then play the Raven's Choice DLC (trust me, this helps later on) for Gravity Rush 2, BEFORE starting the main campaign. Whether it's story or gameplay, this is the best & proper order to approach the series in. :)
@lnsflare1Ай бұрын
@@agreedboarart3188As someone who is into story, I think that Gravity Rush 1 is mandatory since the story of 2 didn't really make sense until you've played GR1 and watched the short animated OVA Gravity Rush Overture, but if you don't care about story then you can just jump straight to GR2 since it does everything GR1 does, but better. That said, GR1 is also really fun and only about 10 hours long.
@TheGravityShifterАй бұрын
@@agreedboarart3188 As someone who has played both games at least 5 times. I'd say, play them both! Either way, you'll have to get through the learning curve of the Gravity Shifting mechanics. It's only 2 games and an Anime that's between them in the timeline. It's basically 1 large narrative over 2 games so I'd argue it's mandatory to play 1 first, the Anime, then 2 in order to appreciate the series to its fullest. The Raven's Choice DLC chronologically is before the OVA and 2, after 1, but you want to play that after you finish 2. The DLC is free as well. GR Remastered is a good introduction, and Story wise it's nice to play for context. If you plan to 100% both of them, 1st game will take on average 17-20hrs. 2nd game will take on average 50hrs. The Anime is in 2 Parts and iirc only takes 20min to fully watch. Pt 1 is like an introduction to the new city of the game, and Pt 2 is the events that lead up to the beginning of GR2.

Sony's MO nowadays seems to be wanting to release games that make the player feel something, like actually FEEL an emotion. The God of War soft-reboot duology wants you to feel nostalgic for what the series once was and also wants you to reflect on the past while embracing the future. The Last of Us wants you to understand that while emotions like sadness and anger are important, you can't let them rule your life. Spider-Man wants you to feel like embracing what makes you different isn't a bad thing and in fact should be celebrated, and so on and so forth. What sets Astro apart, even aside from the nostalgia-bombing, aside from the fanservice, aside from all of that, is it's the only one that wants you to feel wide-grinned, glowing-faced, heart-leaping, unbridled *joy* in video games. This little dude's trademark is looking up and waving at you with the happiest look on his face, he is thrilled you're here with him, watching him run around his little world. In the end of Rescue Mission, he's visibly sad that he initially has to leave you behind, because he had so much fun being with you on the adventure, and that's the other matter, Astro's games make you feel like YOU are integral to the experience, that you and what you feel while you play is the most important part of it, there's nothing profound to be said, no greater statement to be made, Astro just wants to have fun, and wants you to have fun with him.

If Sony isn't confident a new Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Patapon, Killzone, Twisted Metal, Modnation, etc. will sell, maybe leaning even harder into mixing franchises and genres in future Astro games can be a way to give us nostalgic flavors of old games without committing to a fully-fleshed out project? @@monhi64 I get where you're coming from with the initial impression, but I think it's worth looking beyond the promo material. Stellar Blade has more than what your notion suggests, so it might surprise you. Like sure there's clearly fan service, but it's more the kind that goes back to the PS1 and PS2 days where people were allowed to have actual creative freedom, and that didn't just extend to gameplay but also character design. I think visual fidelity really ruined people's perspectives on beauty in gaming these days. It's a very solid Souls Lite game. Though this usually means stories and characters kind of suffer. I guarantee those are the same people dogging on the NSMB games and 3D World for not pushing the series forward. BTW, NSMBDS is my 2nd favorite 2D Mario, and 3D World + Bowsers Fury is my 2nd favorite Mario game overall.

I guess my only gripe is it’s a lot harder for me to give a game its credit when it’s so obviously emulating a previous critically acclaimed game. More so Mario Odyssey than Galaxy IMO but this has the space themes and damn near identical level selection. But I’m fine still placing it in the top 3d platformers of all time
@baggelissonicАй бұрын
I was honestly looking really forward to your thoughts of the game. As the quintessential 3d platformer guy on youtube, I feel like there is no other person better than you that can accuretaly distinguish what Astro Bot borrows from other and what Astro Bot actually brings to the table. I feel like a lot of the reviewers have almost zero experience with 3d platformers and they are not really reviewing it as a 3d platformers and its merits as one.

The title of this video basically sums up my opinion. The fanservice is just gravy on top of the achievement of giving us the Galaxy 3 that I've been waiting for since I realized they weren't making more when they announced 3D World.

Fantastic game, I do think they could have more extreme challenge levels for the hardcore completionist. That would have been the cherry on top for me to really have a big challenge set of levels, but great game and definitely borrows a lot from the king SMG

This is the first PS5 game to feel like a “game”. This generation has no standout titles from ps or xbox but astro bot has changed that for me. I’m hoping Sony gets their head out of their asses and sees the potential of reviving or just making new ips that have the same soul and fun that previous ones had.

this is the take you make if you don't actually play games but want to act like you know what you're talking about. to imply this is the first true 9th gen game is hilarious.

@@GetShrekd blud I’m talking how I feel about the game? All I do is play games and if I feel like this generation doesn’t have any stand out titles until now then thats how I feel. If you don’t like that go be an ass somewhere else.

@@Razor-Blade "yeah man I don't feel like super mario bros on nes was a standout title. that's just my opinion though!" is what you're basically saying here. people just wanna talk and talk and make objective statements but then when you receive backlash you hide behind "it's my opinion!!!"

@@GetShrekd what brain damage have you suffered to think this way? Its an OPINION. When have I ever said it was objective fact? It’s how I FEEL about the game and the industry. I’m not telling you to think the same as me. Perhaps you’re too dense to understand that.

I just finished Astro Bot today. I am with you that it's one of the greatest platformers ever made, so I don't think you're overhyping it! And as a huge Gravity Rush fan, I highly recommend you get to that game and its sequel. Watch the OVA called Gravity Rush Overture while at it (but after you finish the 1st game).

Slight disagree: Before this, the best exclusive on PS5 was Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, not Astro’s Playroom. Don’t get me wrong, Playroom is good. But Rift Apart is dope.

Astro’s Playroom though was the first to properly show off the DualSense controller and what it can do from a functional standpoint.

TBH I'm kind of tired of the discussion of this game's use of other PlayStation IP because I feel like some of it has been used as a point against the game or Asobi when it's not their fault in the slightest. THEY are the ones that had enough respect for these franchises that they felt the need to tribute them here. They don't deserve to get dragged down because Sony is negligent. Not to say Ant is doing that here, to be clear. Just describing a general problem I have with discussion surrounding this otherwise very VERY popular game.

This is the best game I've played all year, no stop. I haven't touched my PS5 in far too long, but I HAD to get this, and had to get the platinum too. The only problem I have with this game is one specific challenge level being far too difficult, but otherwise nonstop joy from beginning to end

It is totally Mario Galaxy 3 ! Down to the stars and transitions around the planets and the spinning and punching. I mean, I love it. And sure, why not? Mushrooms and tons of power ups. Bosses. It is totally a Mario Galaxy vibe. So what?

This game looks super fun, and yet it's still not enough to get me to buy a PS5. It doesn't matter how good it is, I can't justify spending 500 dollars for a single game when my PC already plays everything else I wanna play that's on PS5. Knowing Sony's strategy lately though, this game might actually get a PC port.
@HoboJoe007Ай бұрын
Everyone keeps comparing this to Mario Galaxy, which is valid and after playing the game I get it, but I also saw some similarities to Kirby and the Forgotten Land mostly with the main "collectible" being the bots which reminds me of saving the Waddle Dees and how they expand the hub world as you collect more. Then there's also all of the animal abilities acting similarly to mouthful mode abilities with how they are used throughout the levels they are found in and there being a larger variety of abilities compared to Mario Galaxy. All that to say to me the game felt like a combining of Mario Galaxy with Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and that made it all the more special.

Rescue Mission was revolutionary to the genre while Astro Bot was just evolutionary. I put Rescue Mission as the definitive experience of the 3 main titles to date (and that includes noting Rescue Mission had less than half the team size, development time, and financial resources as what Astro Bot got). Hope to see Rescue Mission 2 one day!!

Has someone who doesn't play Mario games I've been loving watching the Nintendo fans talking about how great Astro is and comparing it to Mario. I feel like Nintendo for years has depended on the name Mario to sell and hasn't really put a lot of passion in it. Astro has such creativity and Vibrance in its level design and mechanics just felt good playing.

Unfortunately I can't afford to buy a console and a full price game in one go, but I hope to help spread the word about how awesome this game is. Astrobot has unfortunately gotten a slow start in terms of sales, but there's still hope that people start picking it up after hearing others talk about it. (And we can hope, upon hope, that this may even be game of the year due to it being slow year for flagpole AAA Games)
