I'm a huge Nintendo and platformer fan. I got my first Playstation ever just to play Astro Bot, as many of my friends spoke highly about it. Turns out I now have an obsession with the game and character as a whole. I can't remember when was the last time I replayed a game this much like I've done with Astro Bot. It's a personal choice but it's def up there in my top 10 games EVER.

Grown ass adult actually crying rivers of tears at the end. This game represent already so much to me, seeing familiar faces of gaming through the game and the previous one with PlayStation history. I actually felt like a kid playing Mario, little big planet, rayman, crash bandicoot for the first time. And for that i'm so gratefull. On top of that, when i saw him like that i kept thinking about my childhood heroes that were lost, Crash Bandicoot (Though he came back recently) Rayman and most importantly sackboy. With the total removal of Little Big Planet 3 and all the servers for the games Astro Bot was a light at the end of the tunnel.

That's actually become a tradition of The Game Awards over the last few years: having the director of the previous GOTY winner introduce the orchestra and the GOTY winner. In 2021, Niel Druckmann, creative director of 2020 GOTY The Last of Us Part II, introduced the orchestra and winner. Then in 2022, Josef Fares, director of 2021 GOTY It Takes Two, introduced the orchestra and winner. The 2023 ceremony deviated from this by having Timothy Chamalet do the honors instead, but I'm glad to see them return to this form with Swen Vinke, director of 2023 GOTY Baldur's Gate III, introduce the orchestra and winner.

This came full circle. Nintendo (while they did not create it) perfected the platformer genre. Nintendo brokers a deal with Sony to co-create the "Nintendo "Play Station" before reneging on the deal and going behind Sony's back to partner with Panasonic. Sony then creates their own stand-alone console, the Sony PlayStation and becomes Nintendo's biggest rival. 30 years later, Astro Bot wins GOTY, and while it celebrates 30 years of Sony history, a special nod goes out to Nintendo for popularizing a genre that inspired Astro Bot, a game that likely would never have been made had Nintendo not gone back on their deal to create Sony's industry defining consoles.

I don't think "going behind Sony's back" is the right way to put it. Nintendo backed out of the contract in part because it would've given PlayStation/SCE complete control over any IPs using the format including theirs, no one in their right mind would agree to that.

AstroBot was fun, highly creative, innovative, replicated mechanics from previous games like God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted. The devs could (if they wanted to) recreate the exact gameplay from every game. They won cause they innovated, made the game fun, short sweet and replayable, their game is the only game that made use of the hardware sounds coming out of the controller, gyroscopic controls, haptic feedback. A studio of 65 people have created PlayStation’s new mascot. AstroBot deserved it!

Astro Bot is definitely Sony's "Mario". I have played the Astro Bot: Rescue Mission in PSVR1, and it was amazing and brought about feelings of joy, happiness, and wonder. Astro Bot on PS5 brought about those same feelings in 2024. I haven't played Wukong, but as it is a rouge-like that doesn't bring about the happiness and wonder of Astro Bot it is easy to see why it couldn't compete. I still need to finish Wolong which doesn't follow the exceptionally overexploited "Journey to the West" theme that Wulong does. Not a big fan of Chinese devs story telling abilities... hard to make sense of a lot of the time.😢

This is one of the most well deserved award . Its like we're back to pre 2013 gaming. Im sick of "realism" in video games. i missed the fun Nintendo like games (sony used to make such games in the past) this is why i love my switch. Hopefully, this will open the door for more fun and creative games in the future
