This video shows how I replaced my second generation (1996-2005) Chevy Astro Passenger Van Rear Drum Brake Shoes & Springs.
I don’t change out the drum in this video but the process is the same, just install a new drum instead of the old one! for links to all the stuff I used in the video scroll down.
After you replace the shoes, drum, springs etc be sure you adjust your rear drums. Here is a link to a video that describes how:

Didn't show how to get drum off or back on. It's NEVER that easy !

Using grip pliers to do a rear brake job...Invest in some brake tools..😭😂Also it looks like you have the shoes backwards...The primary shoe which is the shoe with less lining goes toward the front and the secondary goes toward the rear..The primary shoes has less lining because we dont often use reverse..Only for parking brake purposes...The secondary shoe has more lining because it helps to bring the vehicle to a halt...

If it works, why knock him for it? Goes to show he doesn’t need “proper” tools to get the job done. Your comment tells me you couldn’t do it without your brake tools. Also, the springs wouldn’t go into place if the shoes were on backwards.
