Totally agree.. Been using the EQ6-R for almost a year. An absolutely incredible mount capable of holding quite a payload as well. I have the SkyWatcher Quattro 250 (10") Astrograph and the EQ6-R handles it fine. As for Polar Alignment, I ran a test after doing an accurate (not quicky) polar alignment by hooking a guide scope (60mm) with ZWO ASI 120 SS to PHD2 but did not attach to the ST4 port. I wanted to see just how accurate the belt drive system would be. Selected a guide star in PHD2 (don't recall what object I was pointed at). The point being that without being plugged into the ST4 port, the guide star did not move from the crosshairs for 15 minutes. That was good enough for me to know this mount is incredible. I done multiple minute 1000mm (Quattro) imaging unguided and had no star trails. This doesn't mean you shouldn't guide on long focal length, but does mean the corrections, if any, will be minor.. Great video!!

A wonderful mount indeed! I've had mine since late January and love it. Using the polar scope can usually get you within a few minutes of perfect polar alignment. Plate solving from there can get you to less than 30 arc sec of perfect polar alignment. I've taken 600s subs guided with this mount , and the mount is a beast for sure.

Trevor, you hooked me again - less than 12 months into this astrophotography addiction, and now look what you've done! Have a wonderful performing AVX but this video has driven me to consider the EQ6-R Pro (sale priced at $1,345). Will be topping the mount with a William Optics Z81 or my Hyperstar Celestron SE8 - will hopefully have some extra payload capacity for what I'm sure will be another aperture envy moment in the future.

Hi Trevor. At last something about some of the kit I am also using. Your channel is awesome. Thank you. Ive been watching your channel with anticipation since you posted the Esprit 100 vid and wanted more info regarding that scope. Then I noticed you using ZWO camera and then comes along the EQ6-R mount! After one year of research I entered into AP green in January with an Esprit 80 on an EQ6-R mount with ZWO MC120-S camera and scope for guiding and imaging with a T6s(760D). Everything I have learnt about AP has been on KZbin and forums. Everything I have learnt about my Kit has been from the instruction manuals, and trial and error since I can find very little in reviews other than manufacturer bias. Through all of that and with limited AP knowledge I think I can say truthfully that Skywatcher gear is bloody awesome and it has been extremely satisfying imaging different DSOs as they track across the sky with the seasons. In this vid you mentioned the power requirements for the mount. I purchased a 20amp 12v regulated transformer to run the mount and dew control but am hesitant about running the mount on it. would it be safe? What is your set-up? perhaps you could do a video on mount power?? Anyway I've rattled on long enough. Your videos are very informative and give me a self confirmation that the gear I purchased was the right choice. Thanks again - Dion

The images were spectacular? I wasn't impressed with the image of the Andromeda image at all, but that maybe because I'm so used to seeing enhanced images that incorporate other wavelengths of light to produce. Here we're only seeing visible wavelengths.

I know this isn't a new video. And I have watched it several times, but. As a person who has never previously owned an EQ mount of any kind, what is needed is a video that shows the setup. The tripod setup and which way the legs need to point. The leveling. The hands on, up close moving of the adjustment knobs so that we see how it's handled. The home positions. All that.

Hi Trevor! Amazing shots! Can't wait to get some filters so I can produce that kind of quality with my rig. So I have this mount and initially had issues where my scope would almost hit the tripod. If you look on page 3 Fig 1.2b in the manual you will see where the dowel is. I found that switching the dowel so that it is aligned with a single leg of the tripod, and not between the other two legs, has helped in preventing any issues with the scope hitting the tripod. It's made life so much easier. Hope this helps! Clear skies.

After hearing your comment about the EQ6-R power requirements, I contacted Sky-Watcher. I quoted your comment and much to my surprise, Kevin replied to my query directly. He stated the EQ6-R requires more current compared to the EQ5. He also stated the Sky-Watcher supplied cable has an internal fuse to protect against surges. This mount requires nothing more than typical motor control circuits. Simply provide 11 to 16v DC with a clean supply, capable of 4 to 5 amp so the motors don't stall.

You can attach those camera , st4 cables (etc) to the mount using something like adhesive velcro or wire twist ties. You will minimize vibration, weight, flexure, guiding errors and the camera getting out of focus. I used to hang them to the no moving parts of the mounts head all the way down to the legs. of course, you want to allow some slack for the DEC and RA movements. Great video . Great mount from SkyWatcher.

Scope wise...I'm looking at a WO Z61/71 or larger I won't just be using this mount out in the field I'm building a pier in my garden...which is why I might upgrade the mount...use the eq6 pro on the pier with a guider and get a new mount for field use Any recommendations? Good choice Trevor, especially as you have another SynScan mount. I've had an EQ6Pro (now with belt-drive) for over 10 years and it's still performing very well. I have gone over to off-axis guiding which I highly recommend if you have a sensitive enough guidecam!

Hi, could i ask a question? What RMS are you routinely getting with the belt modded eq6? And did your RMS get better with an OAG or wasit more to do eith choice of scope? Thank you
@oldgittarist6 жыл бұрын
Hi Johannes, I can't give you exact figures but I went to OAG because I wasn't getting round stars on my NB exposures of (typically 15min). The (Rowan) belt drive conversion is only recent but appears to make the mount more accurate all round. I image with either FLT98 refractor or MN190 Mak/Cass. I'm still learning!

I just sent back a 9.25 c sct edge with the cgem ii. After setting it up and polar alignment etc I realized hours later I made a mistake. I have since obtained the explore science 127mm refractor 3 lens ed apo 2.5hex with a twilight 2 mount that I have added a counterweight and new bearings to fit between the mount and tripod. This setup is all 2" 24mm explore 82d with a televue 2x big barlow and a es 3x 2in barlow. I love it because I hated all the wires and hooking up bs that I did not care about. Now I have easy system of great quality and if I wish to take a video I can attach a smartphone. And I can bs and lie and simply use nasaa hubble to take some photos for me and lie that I took it from my telescope hahahaha. Just must wait a few days to get the photos sent to ya :-)

I did a similar thing, had to get and EDGE HD sct, why? Hype, beautiful images visually, but for astrophotography, what on earth??? DSO no way , so it sits with all the accessories in my den while my crappy 120mm double achromat is my workhorse, and my 8inch Newtonian sits in the next room just collecting dust. Your setup makes great sense and I may be going that way soon. The SCT craze is just not worth it unless visual is your main passion. You will have a wonderful experience with your new setup.

Great video 👍 If you used a smaller scope, say the WO 73, would the tracking be similar between the two mounts or would the EQ-R be noticeably better? Presumably the R is for Rowan Belt adaption? Does that also make a cost effective improvement? It'd be interesting to directly compare the two with everything else being equal, covering cost, weight, ease of use.

I moved my dowel on my mount so the head of the mount on my EQ6-R was over the leg rather than between the legs. Makes the altitude adjustment far easier, not hitting the back leg. Also if you use the polar scope makes it easier to use rather than having the leg at the back. Also less likely to tip. Not keen on that weight between the legs. Mind you am 43" were I am, plenty of leg clearance

@denodan3 жыл бұрын
Why do you have the weight between the legs? The mount gives both options either over leg or between legs. Over leg would be steadier and thd mount will be top heavy. Also another advantage of over the leg is rear altitude bolt easy to use as well as polar scope. Unless you have a low altitude think weight over leg makes mount steadier

Hi. I almost buy EQ6-R PRO mount till I saw your video :) I hate that noise coming from that mount. That's remind me why I returned the EQ5 long time ago. With that motor sound like I am in the dentist office. I will make the dogs in my neighborhood very angry :) I think from Sky-Watcher can make better low frequency sound than the currant one!

Yepp, EQ6-R. I thougt to buy it or NEQ6. But these mounts are bit too heavy for my taste. I also bought HEQ5 two weeks ago, in used. The price was 1/3 for the EQ6R and 1/2 for HEQ5 brand new.. After EQ5 , HEQ5 was a huge step up. I will tune up a bit, with rowan belt mod and then will be perfect for me. I dont want to use bigger scope what i have now (SW ED80/600 and Bresser Mak-newton 152/740.)
