In this video I partner up with Celestron to show new StarSense users how to install, set-up, align and calibrate the Celestron StarSense using the SkyPortal app. The auto alignment feature gives you the ability to be outside observing in under 5 minutes!
I actually find using StarSense easier to use with the app then I do the hand-controller. In addition to alignment and calibration, this video will also briefly explore the Celestron SkyPortal app.
Note: This video shows how to calibrate the StarSense, which does not need to be done every session if you keep your StarSense mounted.

5 star. Please continue the way You are making your tutorials. Its really easy to understand and follow. The problem with other youtubers is that they are talking too much and not showing actual demonstrations on how to do things right. But your way- with proper instruction and examples, it makes us more confident to use these equipments-focusers, starsense etc. THANK YOU.

Excellent video. Starsense works perfectly with SkySafari Pro also. I am using on Edge 11. The small FOV makes it critical to have good alignment and Starsense makes it easy. I add additional alignment stars (up to 10 total) which makes Goto extremely precise. That would be a good video - Starsense part 2. Also include ASPA example. Thanks!

Have you had any success with your alignment on the wedge with starsense?
@TheIronbark
@TheIronbark 4 жыл бұрын
@@dthomas319 I did get it to work. A couple of things I was doing wrong, I was setting the wedge at 40 degrees (because thats what someone set theres at on youtube) turns out at my location I should be setting at 34 degrees. I was also pointing my telescope north instead of south. Honestly I did away with the whole thing pretty quickly and upgraded to a Celestron AVX eq mount and an 8 inch SCT. If I could do it all over again, I would not have bought the 5se and goto mount and would have jumped straight into the AVX mount.
@dthomas319
@dthomas319 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheIronbark Thanks for replying - i was afraid you were going to say you upgraded. The wedge seemed like a great economical idea although the reviews were both warm and cool i figured for the price it was worth it. I did notice right off the bat that the angle setting on the wedge seemed off by about 4-5 degrees from where i am (which is 32) Seemed like i had to set it at about 28 to get a reading with a bubble level of 32. I am pointing my telescope south. When starsense does plate solve all 3 points (which is rare) it still has a very high error on it. SMH I have the 8SE and the scope is awesome. You liking that AVX mount?
@TheIronbark
@TheIronbark 4 жыл бұрын
@@dthomas319 Yes the AVX is totally worth it. I was able to actually start taking photos, which is so much more rewarding than just looking through the eyepiece. If you follow the same path i did then you will buy the AVX and then a camera and then a guide scope with a guide camera.

The safety notch that stops the vixen mount from accidentally sliding off is positioned at the bottom. So the vixen plate has to be unscrewed from the OTA and reversed. But, the Star Ssense will run its own alignment proceedure before you can begin viewing. Do I have all that correct?

So if I use the Skyportal app to align, how do I refine the pointing accuracy with additional stars ? This option seems to be only possible when using the hand controller.

Hi Simon, one quick question - could you please help me identify the issue: So I just bought a Celestron NexStar 8 Edge HD with Star Sense. Yesterday night, I had my telescope 100% aligned and calibrated in the clear skies, and I can also see that the telescope is perfectly facing that object (or planet e.g Mars), still when I see from my 32mm, 15mm and 9mm eyepiece, everything is BLACK. Can you pls help me identify the issue on why every object appear total BLACK in the eyepieces even after the telescope perfectly aligned and calibrated? Would really appreciate your reply ..

Any suggestions for trouble shooting? I have the Nexstar 8SE with the StarSense AutoAlign and cannot get the unit to work. I *can* get the alignment to work with the hand-held controller, but not with the app or the phone. I do see the wifi signal coming from the unit (something like "skyportal-45," I forget the exact name) and the phone definitely connects. But, when I try to connect, it says that it finds the signal, but cannot get the telescope to respond. I'm splitting the Aux channel with the StarSense unit; I have a generic splitter (though it said it was for this purpose). Do you have to have a Celestron splitter? I've reset the wifi unit, as well. I do see power to the wifi unit because the lights are on (the second blinks fast and when I try to connect the third blinks once). I'd appreciate any help! Thanks for the video! I've watched it several times to try and solve this issue, as well as most of your other videos!

It's def. a Canon as BackYardEOS will work with only Canon cameras.
