I remember being a kid, first reading Linda Goodman's Sun Signs (a very very popular astrology book published in 1968, the year before I was born) at age 8 & being fascinated by it, then it wasn't until when I was age 10-12 or so where I bought a proper beginner's astrology book (so think 1979 / early 1980s) that had ephemeris in it (to figure out where all those other bodies were located, the ephemeris were tables you looked each of them up on, moon, Mercury, Venus, etc through Pluto, no midpoints, no Chiron (it was discovered in 1977), no other asteroids, no Lunar Nodal axis, no parts whether the Part of Fortune or other Arabic Parts, you did at least get your ascendent, your midheaven / MC & you used a Placidus house system, no discussion of other house systems, & no discussion of other astrologies like Vedic/sidereal, Chinese, Japanese, Mayan, Egyptian etc). You had to look up all those placements in the back of the book, then using a pencil or a pen fill them in on a blank wheel in the astrology book to get your chart, draw the lines between them to delineate your aspects, then look up 'cookbook' interpretations for all the placements. AND *this* was a big revolution to learning astrology as a beginner. The quantum leap that came to astrology in the 1980s was astrological software (loading the ever-growing ephemeris into a table the computer & software did all the work) where astrologers could run your chart for you, print it out & mail (or fax if you needed it rushed) it to you for a very small fee & this was pre-Internet. Now there's sites like astro.com where you can probably get most of what it took a few hours to do by hand in a few seconds. Interpretation is still tricky (a lot of what those DIY astrology books said was pretty generic & could be wrong, you were limited in the bodies you used, orbs, aspects emphasized, other house systems), but at least now there are so many other places & ways to study, so much easier access to so many people who are pushing astrology forward. We definitely live in more interesting 'astrology positive' times.

Thank you Amanda & Rick; Happy Friday! For some reason I keep thinking of the Three Wise Men and the Star of Bethlehem. Isn't there some astrology involved there? "Magi"? Don't know just throwing that out there. I am not an astrologer, but I try to learn the basics and I am also a Christian. God gave us the planets, stars, and history. No conflict for me. I need all the help I can get! 🌞
@VDOVault4 жыл бұрын
There's a modern branch of astrology called 'Magi Astrology'. I only have a few (used) books on it, the organization that certifies people as Magi Astrologers keeps a pretty tight control (almost trade secret level) on their practices unless you pay for them & it's not all that inexpensive to train in the Magi School. I do know Magi astrology adherents pay close attention to parallels & contra-parallels, declinations & timing when figuring out aspects & transits. If you contact a Magi on a 'red day' & they don't know you (for example the 9th & 10th of September were Magi red days because not only was Mars going retrograde, there were some exact contra-parallels of bodies they consider important on those 2 days), they may not respond to you because among other things you should avoid on Magi red days are meeting new people and/or starting new relationships and/or starting new business. Magis pay A LOT of attention to timing, they are known for taking great pains in choosing not just relationship partners but wedding days, for choosing business partners as well as careful attention to the day & timing of launching a business venture.

@@LotusLady9 I haven't investigated Magi astrology deeply, I haven't been willing to make that kind of blind investment up front to learn their astrology. I know they do advise a lot of people in the corporate & finance worlds on things like corporate formations (the date to incorporate) or when to time an initial public offering (IPO) of stock. I know there are other ways to do financial astrology but the Magi are also big into it (you can look up some of their teachings online, it's also written about generally in their books most of which I think have gone out of print in the Internet age).

@@VDOVault Thanks. Yea, I have heard of people using the services of an astrologers for financial decisions etc.My interest is in spiritual development and learning where my chart can help me understand my life better.🌞

@@LotusLady9 I love seeing people come back to the spiritual side of astrology. The Magi school is out there, but it's just one of many approaches to studying astrology & interpreting charts. There is some spirituality in Magi but I think they are more about precisely timing things to maximize life opportunities & minimizing the 'bad stuff'. Where as say an evolutionary astrologer like Steven Forrest is more about learning from life ('bad' stuff can be a good teacher) & seeing everyone progress forward. Or a psychological astrologer (beginning with Carl Jung, then James Hillman, Liz Greene, Mark Jones) looks at astrology from a psychology-informed approach. You have so many more ways to learn astrology now (thanks Amanda & Rick).

Wow. Great insight on the vedic and western...issue so to speak. Around 22m mark. Interesting to consoder that because western astro was forced underground....it kind of stayed truer to the ancient practice. And researchers found those links. I am hindu and studied vedic but i live in the U.S. and find that western astro is more accurate for natal readings. A 4th generation vedic astrologer living in the US told me that her grandfather said that vedic astrology for natal readings wasnt done until recent times. He used vedic only for the Panchang...auspicious dates, seasons etc. But nothing natal. Interesting.

I enjoy all of Rick's shows, as well as you, Amanda. You are an wonderful interviewer and organizer of the Astrology Hub and I am learning a great deal. I can see how your corporate background was so necessary to give you the skills to run a truly excellent program. However, Rick, just a few points here: What is referred to as "the glory of ancient Greece" is just that, Greece or Hellas. Hellenism is a later period of history, approximately a century later, a culture encouraged and birthed by Alexander the Great, a Macedonian who conquered Greece along with a huge chunk of the ancient world. Hellenism is a syncretic system that combines the ancient cultures of Greece, Persia, and India. So yes, I would not be surprised to see a growth and expansion of astrological knowledge during this period. Much of the foundational text of the Jewish Kabbalah is an astrological text. As in Christianity and Islam, in Judaism too, the mystical branch of the religions was driven underground and the rational beliefs won out. I know that in Judaism, it was the effect of the European Enlightenment. Not sure when that happened with the other two Abrahamic religions. This foundational text, the Sefer Yetzirah or literally the Book of Creation, I was taught by my teacher, a Rabbi, is so old that its origin disappears into the mists of ancient history. Some believe it dates to Abraham or even earlier, which would date it to ancient Sumeria which predates the Babylonian period. I cannot compare the astrology in this text with what we are practicing because I am new to astrology, this being my second year of study, and I took a course in the Kabbalah before that when all I knew were the names of my Sun, Moon, and Rising signs but I could not have told you what they meant. By the way, it is from this region, Mesopotamia, that we get the 360 degree circle with its mathematics that gave us the 60 sec/min. and 60 min/hr. Whether they had that system of time, I 'm not sure. I thought they did and that what you describe with the unequal hours was medieval Europe, not the Middle East. There was much wisdom in the ancient Middle East, as well as India and China that did not reach the West till the latter part of the medieval period and the Renaissance. As for mathematics, the concept of zero as represented by a symbol, with the numerals and used in arithmetic and the decimal system came from India, brought to Europe during the Golden Age of Islam, 700-1000 CE by the Arab traders. Sorry, this old retired high school history teacher really had to speak here. Naomi Santoro Virgo Sun, Capricorn Rising - ha, I guess that's pretty evident! : )

First day of HOMESCHOOLING .... and astrology fit perfectly with astronomy and our area of earth no longer receiving direct sunlight for photosynthesis, how first people’s and modern people’s prepared, thru small steps that would lead to big results later.... like composting, seed collecting, harvesting, organizing..... and serving, who has assisted us and how we can serve others.....and how Virgo season also represents these small steps, for selves and others, that ripple out to great affect. They are writing personal thank you s all month to all those that serve for the sake of it all month. These archetypes, these planetary systems.... we are already fractals of the larger bodies... so astrology really “makes sense” to them. We are all A whole lotta fire and air, so they were also able to be gentler with themselves for our NEED to ground to focus at these times. I've come to see astrology as a possible religious / spiritual practice in its own right. I'm trained as a scientist (virology, particularly common cold & flu viruses were my area of research, yes I knew a bit about coronaviruses before SARS, MERS & SARS-Cov2 / COVID-19 came along) as well as an intellectual property lawyer. And I don't take too personally what others think of astrology, even those I am closest to (my best friend of 30 years is a hardcore fan of James Randi who despised astrology, mediums, etc). If it bothers them that much they have the 'free will' to not associate with me or to choose to associate with me less intimately. Also horology (the study of time, clocks & watches, time-keeping devices) & horoscope fascinate me.

VDOVault I think we need to know we don’t have to share our lives with some friends if they have aversions to things. Obviously you have these interests from your own birth chart? Like friends have different music that makes their heart sing, or textures or tastes....I kind of like to know something from their inner self you can pass over when they are troubled...that’s when it dawns on them...that the higher intelligence, our organic selves , our journeys separate to them, can share that value in a heart beat🌹
