Bart and Krista Halderson last been seen by their son Chandler as the couple was preparing to head to their remote cabin in Sawyer Lake, Wisconsin, for the Fourth of July weekend. They would never return home. Chandler, 23, was attending Madison College studying for an IT degree, he volunteered as a scuba diver with the local Madison Police diving squad and said he was looking forward to a job at SpaceX.
Detectives interviewed friends and neighbors of Bart and Krista. They wanted to learn more about Chandler's whereabouts over the holiday weekend. Authorities started to suspect Chandler's story was not adding up. In fact, nothing about him was adding up.

When I first listened to this story half a year ago, this story was so horrific, scary, and depressing, and was eerily similar to how I was living my life (just a much more extreme version) that It motivated me to change my ways and improve myself. No more lying to my parents, they love me and want me to succeed, there is no point to deceive them. Now I'm back in college, and have maintained my job at the same time, the only thing missing is a social life but meh, career and job come first. I still play my favorite video games but I've made a rule for myself that is absolute, real life takes priority. The scariness of what laziness eventually leads to has genuinely motivated me to improve my life, thank you guys.

I am 22. I've finished college with a major in Game Design and Production, I have a full-time job, I am making applications for a master's degree and I am incredibly lucky to have an amazing girlfriend. Fortunately, none of this is a lie. But I am a bit addicted to video games and I do have a massive self-esteem/self-confidence problem. I do constantly feel that it would be much easier to not do things, to just let bad thoughts get the most out of me. I would venture to guess that I am, in fact, not a sociopath, but I sometimes do think that I could run down a very dark path if I'm not careful enough. It takes little to behave like a monster, let alone be one. This is just extreme and I can not stress enough how much I despise this person for their unwillingness to consequences. Having the love and support of those around you and paying them back with death is just another instance of how horrible we can be as people.
@seanpeacock4290

I sometimes think of going down a dark path, but I was also raised believing in an afterlife. I firmly believe that there is something after this life where everyone will still have their identity. Gun nut here, just figured I would provide some insight on the SKS. It is a very common rifle even in America, 400 rounds is not a lot of ammo, people usually get 1,000 rounds at a time to save money. SKS is chambered in 7.62x39 same round as an AKM and is technically a "intermediate round". Great video though!

What I looked up about Chandler Halderson, he had faked an injury for a disability scam. His mother was very doting, maybe even molly-coddled him a bit too much, and had basically told him after his "fall" that he was to lay in bed, get rest, focus on healing and she'd do everything to take care of him. His parents had a fairly large life insurance policy, and after his dad found out he was faking being in college, he was probably going to be facing down both parents, maybe his brother in a conversation and be forced to come clean about everything. That's when he hatched that evil plan. He didn't bother to think anything out ahead, he just grabbed his gun and shot. After he shot his father, he probably came up with the plan to kill his mother, fake their disappearances and collect the life insurance money. He needed to buy time, so after his told everyone his parents went out of town for the 4th weekend, his gf texted or called and he said, "You can't come over. My dad's mad at me and I'm grounded." Seriously, what 23 year old gets grounded? At one point his gf stayed over, and as it got late, he said, "You gotta go. I'm going to be up all night doing chores. But you can come over early in the morning and we'll hang out some more." Her response was somewhere in the neighborhood of "Okay?". For someone who had the house to themselves and totally didn't murder their parents(sarcasm, obviously), you'd think he'd be wanting to spend as much time with her as possible, and maybe get a little brown-chicken-brown-cow. The guy was a loser, and, to use Shy's terminology, malignantly lazy. He was just clever enough to create a fake college scenario and fake work scenarios where he could fool people just enough so he could play video games all day(and probably all night), and when that was threatened, he went to the only thing he could think of at the moment, violence.

Not even 7 minutes in right now and I recognize this case as soon as they started mentioning the college stuff. First heard about it on a misterballen video, can’t wait to see how DK presents it Edit: It’s been said to death but the gun is the most normal part of this story. 7.62 is very common medium sized rifle round, and most rural homes in America have at minimum 1000 rounds of different kinds of ammo.
@iglidor

Yeah, few hundreds rounds for firearm is completely normal. Not only in America but everywhere Europe included. Even with just pistol, its common to have few hundreds rounds for it. And its not even hoarding or stockpiling. When you for example go to shooting range for single hour, you will easily unload 100-200 bullets in one visit. And that is with pistol with like 13 rounds magazine. If you have larger magazines, it will go even faster.

SKS uses 7.62x39mm - bullets aren't that large (the bullets themselves are relatively large compared to a lot of guns, but 39mm is pretty short - even .223/5.56 are 45mm long). 400 rounds would fit in a decent size ammo can. 400 also isn't as many as it may sound like - you can go through that pretty quickly when target shooting.

After listening to this story almost a dozen times (I put random podcasts while I cook leave me be) I've produced this one thought that I wanted to share, an assessment of the behaviour of the people around chandler that doesn't have much value but it'd like to share: Chandler was a person that was either: - A devil surrounded by kind angels that could not think bad of him and were always willing to extend an olive branch - A monster living among the innocent who'd rather ignore his behaviour and go on with their lives - A pathetic lier who's friends and family knew or suspected of, but enver called out thinking that he'd eventually fix it all himself And no matter in what way you take it, no matter how you look at it or what was the actual thing going on, did his parents suspect of it all all along but just wanted to believe? I cannot say, I don't have their messages or conversations before me, but however you slice it, Chandler was a privileged prick who was in a situation hundreds would _kill_ to be in, Chandler's life sounds like one of opportunity, loving parents, friends, money to maintain the family without working, videogames, college, and what did he do with all of that? he became a murderer... hell not even a proficient one. So rest assured whomever is reading this, at least you are not a dirtbag as big as Chandler.

Quite sickening story, and it's really absurd to what length he would go to guard his way of 'life', but not put any effort to find alternative solutions, like learn investing or something. It's really mind blowing that he actually killed his father because he found about his fraud. And i have to admit, it's kinda amusing how with all the effort he put on his fabrications and pretend, he still made some idiotic mistakes. He truly wanted to get the easiest way out it seems. Malignantly lazy, as Shy commented. He could pull off his energy reserves only to maintain his state of laziness. Btw, although it doesn't probably apply in this case, being stone-faced isn't always an automatic sign of a psychopath on it's own. Some people (me included) are naturally that way when confronted, eithrr to keep and safeguard their emotions, or to "stoically" take the judgement that's coming for them. Doesn't mean that internally there wouldn't be any feelings of regret/shame/guilt. I've heard it so many times repeated that this kind of less emotional approach is a sign of a psychopath, so i just wanted to clarify that some of us are either emotionally crippled or for other reason keep emotions under check during such confrontations. Not sure if it's just the way i was brought up, but i would feel spineless if i behaved emotionally or something, when being confronted about some wrongdoing of mine.

This story just… hurts. I am a college dropout for damn near the same reasons. I lied about my college experience, I said I was doing well, I wasn’t taking enough classes, all of it, I was just playing different games. I came clean to my parents when my dad was checking my bursars statements to get a head start on taxes during winter break. Fear is a monster. I was afraid to tell my parents and would have kept lying and lying for fear of current consequences, and foolish just propped up bigger ones. I’m currently getting ready for basic training for the Air Force as enlisted, and despite my shame of what I’ve done, it brings me a small amount of hope to see just how much worse things could’ve been if I had stayed on my path. I can only say that it is by the boundless love of my parents and by the unending grace of God that I can have the opportunity I do now despite my betrayal. I’m the words of my wonderful mother, “a vinegar truth is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, better than a honeyed lie.” Cherish your loved ones people, and God bless all of you.

so a small note about the gun and gun laws: the SKS is a very popular semi auto becuase they can be bought for around $300 - $400 and are usually bought by someone as a time first gun. 400 rounds of 7.62x39 is actually not a lot and during the time pandemic ammo prices sky rocketed so people horded as much ammo as possible, but its not unheard of for the average gun owner to have more then 400 rounds of ammo. Private gun sales are legal and while yes there is offical paperwork from your state that you can do to transfer a gun, most states do not requre such paperwork (Califonia does, wisconson doesnt) and taking a photo of the buyers ID with the serial number of the weapon is a legal way to show proof of transfer as long as the buyer is over the age of 18.
