Answer to the Retrograde motion: Consider Earth and Jupiter in this example. Earth revolves the Sun in ~365days whereas Jupiter takes ~12years(1Jupiter year=12Earth years). As a result, in every 12-13months, a situation arises when Earth is closest to Jupiter, which means Sun, Earth and Jupiter are on the same line(not perfectly though due to different planar of the planets with Sun) for a while. Interestingly, Earth's angular velocity is much much greater than Jupiter's angular speed, as a result, when the closest approach situation forms, Earth passes the straight line in much faster rate than Jupiter resulting in the apparent drifting of Jupiter in the backward direction for few months(~4months). Its like when you are travelling in a train and you pass near a still tree, it seems like the tree is moving behind, but it seems to be at almost rest when you observe it from a larger distance. Retrograde Motion is well-described in our Vedic Culture(termed as 'Vakri') and the other planets also goes under the same retrograde phase.
