As some have pointed out I forgot to include Fujifilm lenses to my list. That was by mistake, and there are fuji lenses that are suitable for astro. Instead of taking down the video and re-uploading it with those lenses I will add them here and on the article found on my website. Here are three native Fuji lenses that are suitable for astro: Fujifilm XF 14mm f2.8 R Fujifilm XF 18mm f2.0 R Fujifilm XF 23mm f1.4 R All the DSLR-mounted APS-C lenses can also be adapted for Fuji along with the DSLR-mounted full-frame lenses. Some have also asked for Pentax lenses, and I will add those to my website article.

Hey, what's your opinion on tamron 17-28mm f/2.8? A brief overview of this particular lens would be of much help!
@Apalapse4 жыл бұрын
The Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 looks good for astro, I'm surprised I didn't notice it when I put together this article. Here is a pretty good review of the lens I found: phillipreeve.net/blog/review-tamron-17-28mm-f-2-8-di-iii-rxd/#Coma_correction. Compared to the Laowa 15mm f2 the coma is noticeably better and at all focal lengths at f2.8 the coma never reaches any serious levels. The correction is not perfect but it should be acceptable for most people. Sharpness is very good wide open at 17mm through the whole frame, but corner sharpness falls off a bit as focal length increases, but never to alarming levels - again the performance is acceptable. Chromatic aberrations are also visible but again nothing to worry about.

The Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 fits really well for me to shoot other genre of photography, but I am really keen on understanding and capturing the sky/stars! After this review, it's much more easier for me to make the purchase decision! Thanks again!😊

The Nikon Z 20mm f1.8s has horrible coma wide open. The Nikon Z 24mm f1.8s shows a better performance but the coma is still noticeable even after stopping down 1 EV. The same can be said for the Nikon Z 35mm f1.8s and the Nikon Z 50mm f1.8s. The Nikon Z 14-24mm f2.8 seems like it might be a good option, unfortunately I didn't see this lens when I was doing research for the guide. I am a beginner I did Milky Way for a handful of nights on 2020. My setup is not the ideal for this: My video cam Panasonic GH5. 1st I started with the Lumix 12-35mm F2.8. decent for what it is. But then I wanted a Wide Angle lens and bought the Tokina 11-20mm F2.8 with the Speed Booster Viltrox EF-M2 (Which allow aperture down to F2.0 ). I like how much of the Milky Way I am capturing but it came out with a lot of coma. 1st time I used at ISO 2000 / F2.0 / SS 30" and it was a disaster.... 2nd time I used at ISO 2000 / F2.8 / SS 20" and it was better... and 3rd time I used at ISO 2000 / F2.8 / SS 30" and it was not good again.... I was thinking on buying the Rokinon 10mm F2.8 or the Rokinon 12mm F2.0 but now I see your review and I might be the one doing something wrong. Not the Tokina. Do you have any thoughts? Thanks for the survey. Just a suggestion - Some of the photos of lenses in the video don’t match the text so it’s sometimes not clear what lens you are actually talking about. Also, I suspect most nightscapers would take exception to you disparaging their favourite Nikon 14-24mm zoom for DSLRs 😉. It’s been used to take more classic nightscape images than most of the lenses on your recommended list. The new Z mount version is better but that’s true of most of the new mirrorless lenses outperforming the older DSLR versions of the lenses.

How about weather sealing? 🤔 Winter is the time with a lot of moisture in the air, especially at night.
@Apalapse4 жыл бұрын
Weather sealing is not really a factor for astrophotography... if you're shooting the stars it will be clear and not raining. The only issue you will really have with moisture is if you bring gear quickly inside to a warm environemnt from the cold outside. Doing this can cause water to form inside the lens. I have shot in all kinds of cold-weather conditions without any special sealing - no issues to date.

This (and your previous review of astrophotography lenses) was incredibly comprehensive and useful! Thank you for what must have been and enormous amount of work to produce these. I'm not sure if this is your 'thing', but do you plan to do a review of telephoto lenses for deep sky astrophotography? I'd really love to see a review like that on your great channel. Thanks so much again for all the work you put into your content here and on your Web site! Keep up the amazing work.

Sold my Laowa 15 mm f2. Fantastic lens but unfortunately the stars had way less colors in direct comparison with the tamron 17-28 f2.8. Maybe due to coating?
@Apalapse3 жыл бұрын
I've heard the Tamron is a great one! The Laowa 15 mm f2 is pretty overrated but at least it has zero-distortion and it's not going to break the bank.

I’m a little surprised about the recommendation against the Nikon 14-24mm, any word about the z variant?
@Apalapse3 жыл бұрын
The old 14-24 is overrated by modern standards... yes it is good but just not on par with today's offerings. The new 14-24 on the other hand looks very good! I haven't tested it myself but others praise the coma and astigmatism performance. See this review for example: www.slrlounge.com/nikon-z-14-24mm-f-2-8-s-review/

This voice is so sastified... Also which lens should I buy over the other: Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 Macro ‘Contemporary’ or Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8? I have a Canon M6 Mark II w/15-45 Canon EOS-M kit lens. My usage are for amateur filming, travelling many times in a year ( usually long trip ) and landscape (portrait) photography w/ basic family shooting. In my opinion, I feel the extra reach and the ‘macro’ focusing of the Sigma 17-70mm are better for me. I’m planning to shoot some Aurora Borealis and for all-time using. I’m just learning videography and photography. Please help ASAP. Wish you the best. :)
@Apalapse4 жыл бұрын
I think you hit the nail on the head. The reach from the 17-70mm will give you a better focal length for portraits and other travel settings. I have been traveling quite a bit this year and I am using a 20mm and 85mm and I always wish I had something LONGER than an 85! 70mm will give you ~150mm equivalent field of view on the M6 which is a great documentary/journalism/portrait focal length. At 17mm and f2.8 you will be in a good spot for aurora photography or any type of astro. Plus, the macro abilities of the 17-70mm will be great for close-up portraits or macro photography in general.

@Apalapse4 жыл бұрын
@@huunamnguyen4397 I don't think an adapter should affect optical performance, although for autofocus, the cheaper adapters won't perform as well. I would watch KZbin reviews comparing a bunch of options since I can't recommend one personally; I'm only familiar with Sony E-mount adapters since that's the camera system I use.

about to snipe a 40mm f/1.4 art on eBay since I saw great reviews and apparently it can just be used wide open lol. the 24mm rokinon 1.4 I got off amazon was a gem. I must've gotten lucky because it's SO sharp with ZERO CA, coma, astigmatism at f/2.8 on a tracker. really good value

Hi Vincent, I was wondering if you could give me your thoughts on Soviet MTO mirror lenses for Astrophotography. I can buy a 500mm f/8 mirror by MTO for $200 or so, and I'm tempted because they basically look like mini-Maksutovs, which I know make sharp images when used as telescopes

Have you ever tested the Laowa 100mm 2.8 lens for astrophotography? It is a manual focus 2x magnification macro lens that also focuses to infinity. I got Sigma 14mm f1.8 mostly for astro purposes. I just picked the widest with the largest aperture lens. Turns out one of the best options. But since the sky here is cloudy af, I rarely have an opportunity to shoot any stars.

Oof, I feel that, though. I live and go to school in North Dakota and from October to December we have maybe 10 clear nights. Autumn is a rough season for astro.
