PROGRAM- Astrophotography is a Journey… Not a Sprint!
By: Sid Frede, Electrical Engineer (retired), Motorola, Intel, Business Owner, Astrophotographer
Sid Frede chronicles his pursuit of astrophotography over the last three years. He discusses his journey from a complete novice to a reasonable amateur astrophotographer, sharing the things he learned along the way. Sid shares his opinions formed over countless hours of research, KZbin videos, consultation with club members and trial and error in the hopes that it provides some insight on the path to enjoying the rewards of this difficult hobby.
Sid began his journey into Astrophotography at the beginning of 2020, just as the pandemic came roaring in. He had no experience in astrophotography, but reasonable experience in 35mm film DSLR and digital DSLR photography. Sid is a retired Electrical Engineer (10 years with Motorola Semiconductor &
Systems, and 5 years with Intel) and in 1985 he started his own technical sales rep firm and ran the business for 35 years, before retiring at 70.

There is no atmospheric light scattering on the moon, so if you want to photograph the stars while on the moon, just place the camera on a tripod, use a timer or shutter cord, along exposure, and wide open f-stop. Make sure the camera is pointed up away from the reflective regolith, and away from the sun. the Apollo astronauts on the surface of the moon would be dazzled ... awe struck with more amazing starscape that seen from Everest base camps at night. All they had to do was stand in the shade of the LEM, and shade their eyes from the regolith and direct sunlight. The Hubble orbits in direct sunlight, yet photographs faint galaxies. Photographers know this.
