More FAQ "How to maintain the whiter flecks on Astrophytum?" You can do bottom watering so that the flecks will not get wet. You can also use clean water or rainwater and shower them, but make sure that you have a good air circulation. Sometimes I also use a brush to dust off the accumulated dust in the cactus. This also helps the Astrophytum to efficiently absorb sunlight. If your Astrophytum is dirty or there are algae already, you can use soft brush and mild baby soap and gently brush the Astrophytum. "Why is my Astrophytum shriveled even if I just recently watered it?" If the soil is still moist but your Astrophytum is shriveled, you may want to check the roots for root mealybugs. Root mealybugs are tiny white insects that feed on the cactus roots. Immediately, clean the roots with a solution of 1-part pure hydrogen peroxide to 4-parts water and trim the roots after. Make sure to also check the adjacent cactus. "How to root Astrophytum?" If they are healthy and plump, they will easily root even if there’s no human intervention. But if they are reluctant to root, you can apply rooting powder to induce root formation. Make a fresh cut from the dried roots, then dip it in a rooting powder. Airdry for a few days, then plant it. Make sure to place the Astrophytum on a warm area, away from direct sunlight. Water it with a little amount of water to keep the soil mix moist. Another technique that I do is to plant the Astrophytum in a pure akadama, water the pot. Then place it on a warm area, away from direct sunlight. Keep the akadama moist at all time. They will eventually root after 2-3 weeks. Do not constantly check and uproot the cactus since this can disturb it from forming new roots. You can also mix rooting hormone when watering the cactus. "How do I make my Astrophytum grow fast?" Soil mix is crucial you don’t want it to be too gritty and too organic. You need to find the balance ratio suitable in your climate, and make sure that the components you’ll use have different characteristics and benefits. I made a guide about cactus soil mix: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6q9fomQbrCEfsk Water and light are another crucial factor. Water when the soil mix is dry and use rainwater as much as possible. Give them at least around 8 hours of good sunlight preferably filtered. High temperature also makes them grow fast. They grow best in temperature above 30 degrees Celsius. Just keep in mind to protect the Astrophytum from harsh and intense sunlight. Lastly, don’t forget to root trim the roots and repot them every 1 - 2 years to replenish the soil nutrients.

Thank you so much! This is very helpful. You’re right about akadama, I used it on my black gymno pups and they rooted after 1.5 months. I don’t know what is in akadama but it really works. Crossing my fingers it will work on my atrophytum too!
@theplantprinceph2 жыл бұрын
I also use it to root my other cactus and succulents. I think because it can easily maintain humidity and moisture at the right level without making the soil too wet, soggy or too dry. It is also loose, airy, and the roots can easily penetrate the soil. Perfect condition for cactus and succulents roots. Good luck! Hopefully it will root.

Now I know why my baby astrophytum died last summer, I think it was in direct sun too long. And since it was very tiny, I should've kept it indoors & moist (?)
@theplantprinceph Жыл бұрын
It died probably because of too much sun exposure. It probably got sun burned which eventually leads to rot if not treated.

Hello, I got a pair of astrophytum, and gymnocalicium and they are about 2 inches in diameter. I'm planning to have them on display on my table, and I heard from your video that they need filtered sunlight. Will it suffice if my window is south facing? and how much sunlight does it need for a day? Thank you!!
@theplantprinceph Жыл бұрын
They could thrive as long as they received at least 4 hours of morning sunlight and then bright light for the rest of the day. You also need to water them less if they are inside to avoid overwatering. But if you want them to flower, give them at least 8 hours of full filtered sunlight.

hello! do astrophytums produce multiple heads or babies after a specific age/timeline, like other gymno variety cactuses? i have mostly seen one large big astro, rarely one mother with multiple babies/heads. even in your video at 9:09 three headed astro is presented, I'm not sure if 3 belong to one root/grafted/3-independent cactus potted/sown together in a bonsai manner?
@theplantprinceph3 ай бұрын
The Astrophytum in 9:09 is a three headed Astrophytum which share a single root. Astrophytum can produce pups especially if they are grafted with a columnar root/graft stock. There are also some specimens that are prolific. And some old Astrophytum can also produce pups as they age.

Yes, you could use it. But use it in moderate since water from the aquarium is rich in nitrogen. And Cactus don’t want high nitrogen. You could either dilute the water from the aquarium or use it only once every 1-2 months.

Yes. Variegated cactus are quite sensitive to intense heat or light exposure. The pink is the sun stress color of the variegation.

Hi! My astrophytum became a little dry and wrinkled at the bottom after getting less water for 2 months. After watering again, it doesn't seem to 'fill' up the wrinkles like before. Is it permanent?

No, it is not permanent. It will take time for the Astrophytum to get plump again. Just continue watering it. Or you could also repot it in a fresh potting mix if you like.

My astrophytum is wrinkling/puckering at the base. I have it in verry coarse substrate and only water every 3 weeks.The base is firm and roots look healthy. What do I need to do to plump it up again?
@theplantprinceph Жыл бұрын
Hi, It might be wrinkling because it is potted in a very coarse substrate and doesn’t get enough water. The Astrophytum might not get enough water since the water drains fast due to the very coarse soil substrate and lack of organic. You may want to add more organic to the soil mix, and water more often especially if you live in a dry and arid place.
