Let's talk about one of the most variable genera of cacti in the world: Astrophytum. How many species does the genus have? How do you care for an Astrophytum? Is the care of an Astrophytum asterias the same as a myriostigma?

Great video! I love Astrophytum! I grew some myriostigma over 5 years ago, believing I must sow many, many seeds as I would lose 50% each year for the first 3 years.. 🤔 (something I read on line).. So I ended up with close to 200 seedlings.. Whilst it's true I lost a good third in the first year, after that, they continued to thrive so I am now somewhat over run with them! 😆 Good job they don't grow very fast.. 💚 Capricorn's my favourite!

Thank you!! That’s a great problem to have haha You probably have a green thumb since it’s totally natural for people to suffer casualties 😅

Awesome video! My favourite is Astrophytum asterias. I love how there are so many cultivars, forms, and patterns in this single species. I enjoy breeding them since there are so many possibilities.

Wow, this was a really good and informative video that I enjoyed. Most of my cacti are all Gymnocalycium, but I do have Astrophytum asterias, Astrophytum nudum and Astrophytum myriostigma. I hear that these Astrophytum take many years before they will bloom. Is that true? As for me, I grow my cactus for the Flowers! :) Thanks again.

Wow , your knowledge and collection is quite impressive. I knew nothing of this plant , and now I want to see and learn more. I have only 1 asrtophytum myriostigma that came in a tiny 4 inch pot. It grew very well on its own outside on my protected porch for a year, so I just transplanted it into a much nicer home with gritty soil. I would be very excited to see mine bloom.🤞

Thanks Albert! That’s awesome, I’m sure that now that it’s in a larger pot it will bloom soon! Welcome to the channel.

Awesome plants man great video. I want to mention that medusa may be a predecessor of all Astros because it doesn’t cross with any other Astro but it can cross with other genus of cacti super strange
@RareCactus Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! That is an interesting theory! And I wonder if it really doesn’t cross with anything or maybe it just hasn’t happened yet. Plants are crazy 😜

Caput Medusae is by far my favorite. I love that its such a weirdo! Haha I would really like to do some breeding of them and see if they have any crazy variability like Asterias does, with V shaped trichomes and such.
@RareCactus Жыл бұрын
Can you imagine a Caput medusae with V-type trichomes?! Holy crap. I bet someone’s working on that too! 🤩

Very interesting! Thank you so much for the educational video. I love this type of material. I've been wanting an Astrophytum, but the stores in my area do not seem to carry them and the on line stores don't have the kind I want, the ones that are covered in white squiggles. (How do you like that Latin!? Aehh?)

Don't you love genetics. Thank you for this fantastically informative video. I really got a lot out of it, so much so I just ordered my first 3 Astros. You say mineral soil but what sort of mineral or rocks are best, can I get from my big box hardware for example?

I have a very old and big Astophytum myriostigma white.. Can I repot it? It have no space in the pot, but I'm scared to kill it if I change the pot... when is the best time to repot?
@RareCactus9 ай бұрын
Yes, you can repot it. Best time is spring 🙂
@yaddahaysmarmalite4059Ай бұрын
you can repot them anytime, but not without consequences. the best time for least consequences is when they are dormant; that's usually in winter. you should learn about trimming cactus roots before repotting.
