Best Padres team ever. It was heartbreaking how the season ended in the WS but still one of my fondest memories as a life long Padres fan.

Being an Astros fan my whole life this series was the most painful to watch...the rivalry with the Atlanta Braves in the post season throughout the years and finally getting to face a different team and thinking our best chance of getting to the NLCS was through the Padres...boy was I wrong, but I must say what really stings...is being a fan of an Astros organization at that time that made a series of personnel moves that came back to bite us in the ass...trading away a lot of young players to rent Randy Johnson for half a season only to see him walk to Arizona the following year, and seeing Steve Finlay, and Ken Caminiti wearing the Padres uniform while beating us was all too much... RIP Tony Gwynn & Cammy

Danny Viera III, we finally got one last year. But I agree, THIS was our year.
@tbewin5 жыл бұрын
@danny viera good analysis but the astros really had not started the rivalry with the braves yet as they had only played them once in the playoffs to this point. I thought there was no way this astros team would lose to the padres and was a stinging one as well but 1999 was worse (bases loaded and no out and dont score vs rocker) and thought their 2001 series was a gimme only to be swept.

The Astros were stacked during this era. Bagwell, Biggio, Alou, Johnson. As a Padre fan, we were always the underdog so this playoff run was incredible for us. I think all of us knew what was coming in New York though. Ha.

Phil Nevin was the man on that team. The big unit randy Johnson was afraid of Phil and knew that if he tried to hit Phil with a fastball, Phil would charge the mound and stomp a mud hole in randy then walk it dry. Those were the good ole days of 90's baseball. Hopefully Phil get a managerial job soon. He'd be great managing these young players today!

Seattle traded him to Houston at the 1998 Trade Deadline. He was a "hired gun" to the Houston Astros. He became a Free Agent at the conclusion of the season and didn't resign with Houston for the 1999 season.

@@tbewin1z143 heck if the Padres could have pulled the trigger on a 1998 TRADE deadline deal….they would have won it all in 1998. The rumors were swirling that the Seattle Mariners were offering Randy Johnson to The Padres for SP Joey Hamilton and OF Reuben Rivera. The deal never got made and the Astros got him 😡. The Pads lost to the Yankees in the Series in ‘98. With both Randy and Kevin Brown it could have been different…..
