Those rainy hydrangea scenes made me so nostalgic even though I've never been to a temple with hydrangea flowerbeds in the rainy season. Heck, I don't even live in Japan. But there's this episode/arc in xxxHolic and the anime really captured the mood or atmosphere of the scenes included in this video. It makes me want to visit temples or see a flowerbed of hydrangea on a rainy season one day.

*This has gone to the point of where even youtube knows I want to go to japan*
*For those who clicked wanting to find out what a Chozu is (like me lol):* In Japanese culture, you must wash your hands before visiting a shrine/temple, the Japanese actually have a very complex and strict system regarding this. A ‘HANACHOZU’ is the hand washing “workshop” before you go in. This is why you see two wooden planks and a little wooden spoon used to cleanse your hand before entering and seeing the gods and spirits! The flower floating in water are called Hydrangeas, they are seasonal flowers and they are very very beautiful indeed!

Please, enlighten me: why are the hydrangeas in the hand basin at 0:28? The cups are for drinking water? Do the hydrangeas give flavour to the water?
@tinseltail4 жыл бұрын
The basin is to ritually wash your hands when you visit a Japanese Shinto temple. You dip water up in the cup, wash your hands by pouring the water over them, some people wash their mouths too, then you let water wash over the handle to purify it for the next person. I think the flowers are just for seasonal loveliness!
