@@dennisschwinnen7865 hi! So as i said in my comment, one of the templates seems off. I made the tower though. The dark bold lines tell you how you need to fold stuff (especially important with the tower roof-you have to fold it before trying to glue it together). You glue stuff together by gluing the little 5mm strips of adjacent elements. Good luck!

3:30 fact, if you are hobbying on a budget one of the best things you can do is just ask. I wanted to get a friend into killteam, but I literally couldn't afford to buy a box of models for him. So I just went to my local games store, asked one of the clerks I was friends with if she had some used models I could buy for cheap. And she just gave me five space marines they usually give out to kids who want to try painting for free. Another time I needed 7 boxes of card sleeves for Magic the Gathering. Went down to the same store and told the clerk I'd rather spend my money here, but the sleeves just a bit cheaper than what they costed at the store or I'd have to go online. And the guy said it wasn't a problem, and I got the at a cheaper price. Don't be afraid to ask, most people who are into these niche hobbies are willing to help you if you are on a budget. Having some basic people skills can go a long way if you don't have the money right now.

The sleeves in particular is something I see a lot at my LGS. If newer players don't have sleeves for a draft event, for example, the staff regularly just give them to the players.

@@sithblaze Heck on the topic of card games, I wanted to try flesh and blood around summer of last year. But the premade decks were out of the question. So I wrote a post on a local Flesh and blood group if I could buy a box of random commons/rares. From those 1200 cards or so I bought, I think I made 8 decks, 4 for me and 4 for a friend I split the box with. All for about 10 $ each.

1st, INCREDIBLE BUILD! 2nd - So, I used to be a roofer. Copper was and is used only in sheets, not shingles. Typically it is used because it is pliable when cold. Not only that, but it costs A FORTUNE. Only government buildings and cathedrals have copper. Thatch and wood shingles were and are used almost exclusively for most buildings. Just thought the concept of copper roofs is an interesting one that I am going to use! Making sheets of copper would be EXTREMELY easy

Hi Squidmar, awesome video again. Here is a little realistic tip. Copper prevents moss from growing. In Switzerland we have this traditionnal roofing technique called tavillon, which is basically wooden tiles. You can get moss on it. But if the chimney is in copper, or the base of it which is usual, or if the ridgecap is in copper, you'll have much less moss. On some chalet you even have roofs full of moss, except just under the chimney due to rain water touching the copper, getting "copperised" and by flowing of the roof under it prevents the moss from growing.

Steel wire, Mr. Squidmar. A steel wool pad or wire grill brush makes a great tool to scrub coffee stirrers with in order to give them a natural-looking grain similar to a life-sized plank. You can also leave some steel wool in water (or use a teabag instead of steel wool for a browner effect) then brush that into the bare wood to make a deep-reaching dye/stain. Excellent for making really old buildings or ruins with wood elements.

10:40 - it seems unlikely that those overlapped offset card tiles would be copper or metal, they'd more likely be slate, stone, clay or wood. It's very expensive to cover a building in metal roofing, so it's saved for expensive solid stone buildings and would require an excess of metal (I.e. your kingdom/fantasy world can't be at war when the building was built, otherwise the metal would go towards armour and weapons production and it would also have to be important enough not to have been stripped of metal when the war started). And when you do install metal roofing, as you can see in your example pictures, you use a crimping technique that means there are ridges all the way down in straight lines. The offset you see on roof tiles is caused by the nails that hold the tiles in place being covered by the tile above it. Of course your fantasy world can have this unusual combination of materials, but it's much more likely that they wouldn't have this kind of roofing and it's also way easier to do slate, clay or wood tiles with a base paint, a watery brown wash and a dry brush of a cream/off white. But YOLO!
@idontwanttopickone
@idontwanttopickone 2 жыл бұрын
Also, be careful about what you use as a reference images. That building was apparently built in the 1930's so it might be as old as the home you are currently in or could have been your grandparents new build - eo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgo_Ohrdruf Hardly a medieval or anchient building, it's not even victorian.

@idontwanttopickone
@idontwanttopickone 2 жыл бұрын
@@Snacklord_Dennis I never said it didn't. I just find it very jarring to have a small wooden house with what would be a very expensive metal roof on top. There are lots of places where buildings with metal roofing exists in history - usually they are large, status symbol buildings. There are lots of times when it would make sense to have metal roofing in a fantasy setting - I could picture a fantasy world where a mining/quarry town is made of stone with metal roofing because it's a mining town that produces tons of metal and stone, so for them that's the easiest resources to come by and it serves as a way to publicise what they produce (think of fantasy dwarf buildings). My points weren't said out of malice, they were said out of encouragement of growth. Fictions are based on our shared lived reality, and thinking about why things are done in our world helps to improve our fictions, in whatever medium they exist.

Awesome instructional. Couple of safety points for the younger folks who may want to try this out that Emil probably meant to mention are: never use sharp knives without adult supervision or assistance, even if you are an adult it is a good idea to have someone else around because we can make mistakes, too; NEVER use plastic or super glue on styrofoam as it creates dangerous toxic fumes (although there are some uses for such techniques for older builders when using a well ventilated area and a respirator), use PVA or hot glue and make sure you seal the styrofoam like Emil did with a PVA-paint mixture; always wear a mask, as you saw Emil doing in this video because he is awesome, and you do not want to aspirate small particles of sand, wood fibre or styrofoam (bad for the lungs). I loved this video. I plan to try out your templates for these buildings because I am a miniature terrain builder of many years and was often the go to guy for the table terrain when I worked as a sales associate for GW at a number of retail stores in my country. As a matter of fact my terrain builds became prizes for some customers such as: a custom Gut Barger Stadium to celebrate the release of the Ogre Kingdoms and give customers a place in the store to test out the Gut Barging Rules from White Dwarf Magazine (can't remember the issue number but look at issues from late 2004 to early 2005). The Stadium had an attached Runt Punting Field for those fans of the Gut Barge who wanted to vent their frustrations after their favourite Ogre was ousted from competition. Couple of tips: for the roof tiles (exactly the method I use) you can make things go faster using dollar store paper edging scissors such as those made by Friskars, that will give you notched edge which can be left looking clean and evenly made or you can use a pair of scissors or hobby knife to mess up the notches a bit after to make it look more random and rough; and for cutting the medium density or high density foam insulation (pink and blue), rather than using a saw as demonstrated, score the line you want fairly deep with a box cutter or large hobby knife then just give the cut off a gentle knock with your fist and it should break off almost perfectly (avoids all that foam particulate going everywhere which is impossible to clean up) and NEVER use a saw on foam bead insulation because the mess will be enormous (foam bead insulation can be picked apart for a nice stone texture look for building bases or even walls and other terrain features); last, remember that ALL of the materials Emil used here can be sanded, including card stock! For texture, you can actually mix PVA, paint, and sand or whatever together and apply it with a hobby brush (not one you use for miniature painting) or a piece of sponge to stipple it on rather than painting the PVA on and then adding sand. The look that Emil was describing for the buildings was called "waddle and daub" which was a mixture similar to plaster made with sand and clay and then white washed all held up on thin slats of wood that were put in between the building framework, look it up. Sorry, Emil, I should probably do my own video, but I love yours so much I just got carried away here. Maybe I will do my own and just credit you heavily for the inspiration. Keep up the amazing content my Swedish friend. Much love and appreciation from Canada.

Lots of people complaining about the copper shingles. Sure, in real life, you probably wouldn't find it on poor-folks homes, but then most people (... MOST... people) don't see goblins and trolls and grumples and snarks standing outside of their houses either - as we clearly see in the video. Who is to say that copper roofs aren't more common in that... realm... whatever miniature realm you've got set up there? I think based on this theme, the oxidized roof color really jumps out, SO awesome work. I do feel that the "... fantasy village for $0" price is a bit misleading - I have some primary colors in acrylic paint (+ white and black)... I do think that it's going to take more than 18 hours and a lot of skill to get anywhere close to what you've made here. Nevertheless, I am inspired and believe that I'd have a blast trying - which I think is the primary goal of the video. So again, good job and thanks for the video.

Lol I feel like an “easy” way around some of this is to print out a standard cobblestone image, or buy patterned construction paper…glue it on, Then use the lil wooden sticks for the outlining detail. And still follow along here for what’s needed. Lol I justify that “buying” option as someone would end up having to go get cheap hobby paints if they didn’t have any already. I’m not a super skilled painter yet, but I have painted enough minis to almost “need” an actual diorama to display them on. Quality video Squidy!

I was literally just building a small building yesterday. It didn't turn out quite as nice as yours but it's a good first attempt. And I learned a lot from it. Your video has given me some ideas how to push it a little further. Funny how that worked out. You making terrain video and I building one as well. Thanks for the video.

the material between the main exterior beams of houses is called COB / COBB in the U.K. it is very old style it is a mixture of straw ,clay and occasionally animal manure plastered onto a stick weaved skeleton panels ( it provides excellent insulation as the walls are thick - warm in winter and cool in summer , a great aunt of mine had a typical devon county cottage in the U.K. built as recently as the early 1900s, hers had stones in the mix for more stability as there was no exterior beams )......................... i just like scratch builders vids, and i had the set !!! all that time ago ..............great video with the real life photos so often you need to know what it realey should look like your building

I know that Fat Dragon Games has some fantastic papercraft sets that you print on cardstock and glue up. They're inexpensive, and you can print as many as you have cardstock and printer ink. Less "free gaming" than "gaming on a budget", but it's still a pretty great alternative

I once made a hags hut, and when it came to shingling the roof I used thin card board for the shape and cut up a bunch of popsicle sticks and used that and hot glued them one by one laying as I went. It wasn't that bad, but it did take a long time. I think I will use some of what you did in this video for future projects. AK has some really nice moss stuff as well. One is just a moss flocking and the other is kind of more of a moss technical paint.

If you have a local carpenter or hardware store near you, ask - politely of course - for cut-offs & scraps. I worked at a hardware store and we gave wood, cardboard & packaging material away for free. And for painting old building from wood - grey primer is your friend. Old, exposed wood is not brown but grey or white

The only caveat to this is you have to have everything already from past projects on hand, i.e. all the tools and leftover materials so this is not free for beginner. There will always be a buy-in cost especially for people who are just starting and have nothing.

I made terrain like this all the time with XPS foam, if you're thinking of doing this, don't waste your money on mini paints. The acrylics from the dollar store cost a fraction of the price, last at least 3 to 5 times longer, and cover just fine. You don't need those tiny pigments from the mini paints because nothing you're making is going to be as detailed as a mini, especially if you're doing the pva/black paint (again just from the dollar store, not an expensive ink) because it will cover up a little bit of the detail, though there will still be plenty. The fact that they're playing this off as a $0 build and using those more expensive paints is just stupid.
@SquidmarMiniatures

Craft paints are great for terrain! Solid advice. As the title say, the crafting is 0 dollars, as you'll also see me talk about in the video.
@CarbonKnights
@CarbonKnights 2 жыл бұрын
@@SquidmarMiniatures The painting is part of the crafting though, so using more expensive paints just because you have them on hand wastes more of them since you're using a lot more than for a typical miniature which ends up being expensive than just spending $5 for 4 or 5 colours at the dollar store. My point is since you're easily using more than $5 worth of paint for a few buildings with the Vallejo paints that it's much closer to $0 to paint with the craft paints. Neither way is $0 but the craft paints are a lot cheaper not only to start, but in the long run too
@Almindale

I feel like you're splitting hairs about the $0 thing. The fact still stands than you can do all the construction of the buildings with leftover bits, off cuts and common materials for next to nothing :)
