Ah, yes, the Tekken franchise. Loved the games, but loathed what they did to most of the cast. I remembered being surprised at how little to nothing they did with Asuka in the games given she shares both the Kazama blood AND the fighting style. And then there's the treatment of the OG characters, like Paul Phoenix and the Williams sisters. I can go on, but my thoughts on the overall universe is that it started to decline in Tekken 4, then went full blown anime of the bad kind from Tekken 5 and beyond. Then, sadly, the non-canon entry, TTT2, actually had some of the best endings and character backgrounds for a long time before getting the mess that was Tekken 7.

Hi from the future. Asuka is not Jin's cousin. Jin and Jun are from the main branch of the Kazama family. They have no close relatives as the main branch is presumed to have died out after Jun's disappearance. Asuka is a distant relative of Jun and Jin, from the side branch of the Kazama clan and most likely has no connection to Yakushima. As far as why Asuka was included in T5 and onward, it's likely to have a character that purely uses Kazama style karate. For the developers, creating movesets is a lot harder than creating a new character model (which you have to do every new game anyways) so Asuka is basically a repurpose of the existing Kazama moveset. While the Kazama purification power is useful for story purposes, Harada never intended Asuka to be the Kazama to deliver the purification powers to the Mishima bloodline, and we can see what he intended in the story of Tekken 8.

Once again, a very nice and SENSIBLE idea for a character who was misused in such a gross way. I'm glad that there are people out there who noticed just what happened to her which is a shame because it was already bad enough we lost a fan favorite (Jun) around that time so when Asuka was introduced, gross implications aside (Jun being discarded for a younger model), Asuka at least had a decent debut in Tekken 5 what with her connection to the Kazama family and having the power to suppress the devil gene. But nope, she got relegated to a generic, tomboy anime schoolgirl forever trapped having to have a pointless schoolgirl rivalry with Lili in a shallow copying of Street Fighter's Sakura & Karin. Oh joy /s. I pretty much agree with your rewrite having her be a more central figure of Tekken 6 teaming up with the others who had a reason to stop Jin and how her involvement carried into Tekken 7. Tekken's story was never perfect but it's clear that after Tekken 4, things started going south at the blink of an eye and part of this has to do with Harada's piss-poor storytelling. This all goes back to what happened with Jun. The original story had Jun dying by the hand of Ogre which was the motivation for Jin to defeat him and avenge his mother. But then when Tekken Tag Tournament 1 happened and she returned, it confused fans only for Harada to then come out and saw that Tekken Tag 1's endings were not canon to the main story. We see this carry over to Tekken 4 where stories for the characters pick up after Tekken 3. Though I still remember back during this time, people were still pissed that Jun was not in the game and so for this, it's pretty clear that Harada felt the best way to appease fans was to introduce a new character who had her fighting style and resemblance creating Asuka in the process. This still didn't satiate Jun fans though and he kept quiet about her until Tekken Tag 2. Fan reception to her was overwhelmingly positive as to be expected and THIS is where Harada made a stupid change changing Jun's status from deceased to "missing". This right here is part of what ruined the story but okay fine, she's "missing". If Jun does not make her return in Tekken 8 then this will just prove to me that Harada was either trolling or he's just that incompetent of a writer even worse than we imagined. But back on Asuka, yeah she's definitely one of the worst examples of wasted potential from the Tekken series and I would hope that she'll be put to better use in Tekken 8's story narrative.

Just here to share some good news from Harada not really sure if you heard of this he confirms in his Twitter account that Jun would in fact play a big role in Tekken 8 on the eventual confrontation between Jin and Kazuya. Not really sure how this would affect the narrative of the story but I hope they don't ruin Jun's return after missing out 3 main Canon lore games. If the messed this up I'm seriously gonna loose it on Namco and I also agree with what you said about Asuka as well being a character full of potential and ended up with a never ending limbo towards Lili. Just hope she too gets fixed up in Tekken 8 with the fact her auntie Jun is returning. Despite the heavy damage they already done with this I guess potential character into a clique replacement character for the sake of calming the fanboys who wants best girl Jun back .

You know which character really was wasted potential in Tekken after just only being in one canon game... ANGEL!! The Tekken 8 story needs her now more than ever to come and help stop Kazuya forever, this could be the time to redeem herself after she obviously failed in Tekken 2, and that allowed Kazuya to become the monster that he is today.

Tekken in general has just so, so many, perhaps countless wasted potentials of all their freaking characters. They've all set up to have pretty intriguing background but they've all never really tied the story properly together. I'm honestly upset to see a majority of their endings are just the same unfunny gags or "insert cool action scene" or "Mishima are evil and I'll do revenge" Unless they're Mishima, they probably play no role in the main story whatsoever.;;; Like I really wish they have some character development in their endings or something???
@BiggestChungus214 жыл бұрын
Firstly, Mishimas are the best thing about the game. I play them almost exclusively, and also I play Jin. Mishimas and Jin are the only characters I care about. My love for Mishimas have even transcended my love for execution. I used to think that execution heavy characters are the only ones to matter. But now with Kazumi and her pseudo-Mishima style, with like zero execution has won me over. But just like most people who take this game way too seriously, we don't give two shits about the story. But even with that said, you're completely right, everyone is just background characters. If you're not spewing electricity in your veins or can transform into a devil, you're not going to get taken seriously.

Interesting, if I remember correctly, during Tekken 5 development, Unknown, who, at the time was supposed to be Jun's sister, not Jun herself, was going to be a playful character, just not possessed by the wolf spirit. Then Asuka was created because of the school girl craze in Japan. Dang. I was a big fan of Asuka and hoped to see her interactions with Jin and the others, and maybe a possible return of Jun, but this series kept on disappointing me. Won't ever forgive what they did with Jun either. First, they told us she was dead, then changed it to her be missing, telling us she was too old now to be include in the games. It took her fans calling Harada out on twitter to put her in TTT2 as well as the other ladies like Kunimitisu and Michelle. I used to be a huge fan of the series, but after Tekken 4, it was clear story and character development meant nothing, so I just left the series.

And i always liked asuka i remember back when i played t5 i always wanted to see more interactions between jin and asuka just to learn it wasn't canon and they still never met. Huge disappointment.

If you thought Asuka was wasted 3 years ago, play Tekken 8 and see how much potential was missed. Long story short, Asuka finds out that Jin's mother was Jun Kazama... Somehow not knowing this years ago. But to go into a bit more detail, they seriously never addressed if Asuka and Jin are cousins. Like, they could've revealed that Jun is Asuka's aunt (and maybe reveal that's Asuka's Dad is Jun's younger brother, and keep in mind this is strictly my personal head canon,) during this reveal. But no. They instead focus more on the relationship between Jin and Xiaoyu during that scene.
@shadowclaw72109 ай бұрын
I’m not against them developing relationship between Jin and Xiaoyu. The scene where he talks about her dream is super sweet. But one additional line would been good. Imagine Asuka suggest that he lives with them Kazams. Since they are his family after all. It would honestly develop Jin resolve to live and not throw his life away.

Thank you so much for this video! I hate the fact that, despite her potential, Asuka is treated like a dumb anime schoolgirl. What makes it even worse is that there is already another character who fills that role perfectly and that's Ling Xiaoy. Asuka is, as pointed in the video, supposed to be legacy character to Jun, not a comic relief character. Speaking of which, i hope that you will also do one episode for Paul Phoenix. It's sad to see one of the strongest characters from first 3 games (dude defeated Ogre, for crying out loud!) being reduced to bumbling buffoon.

Literally Jin’s cousin and is instead pushed aside for a dumb rivalry with Lily. The Kazama’s are a complete mystery to this day but it’s been hinted from spinoffs like Tag Teams that they have angelic history that counters the Devil Gene the Mishimas have. I seriously hope Tekken 8 expands on the Kazamas since it’ll probably focus on Jin and Kazuya’s rivalry.
@YophiSmith3 жыл бұрын
She truly could have evolved as a character to become much like Jun Kazama and truly comfort Jin. Give her the story she deserves continuing from Tekken 5. She ran into Jin Kazama and healed him. Her entire story can be about learning about the Kazama’s (She can't possibly know about them because she was unaware she healed Jin or what the devil gene was) and who Jun Kazama was. This way, she becomes more like Jun, even to the point of frustrating Jin and Kazuya as a FOIL character to Jin's dark and edgy and Kazuya's murderous rage. She can remind Kazuya of Jun so much that he refuses to kill her and even allows her to discuss things with him and train with him. It would be a complete contrast to anything else he displays even with his workers, to let this girl come and go whenever she pleases. This begins to tamper with the devil gene (Thus allowing Angel some more screen time). She would also have access to Jin Kazama but in a way that she annoys him because she is so much like his mother, even to the point of looking like her, but her actions are so not like Jun Kazama. She loves cell phones, shopping, she talks with a weird accent, and is so bubbly! Jin would also be in conflict because there should be no reason why he allows this girl, who clearly knows Kazuya because she would MENTION Kazuya around Jin, but Jin still allows her to be around and not send any Tekken Force members to her dojo (Which she would own by now). As she continues to grow, she could become the main threat to the devil gene in both Kazuya AND Jin because like Jun almost stopped Kazuya from going full devil and then raised Jin, Asuka could be the one who gets in trouble and Kazuya would always rescue her, thus giving him redeeming qualities (Like how Devil took Jun and flew away in TTT). For instance, Heihachi could use her as bait to lure Kazuya out and Kazuya could finally defeat Heihachi and try to kill him but Asuka could stop him and he can literally say the same thing Jin said in Tekken 4 but instead say “Asuka Kazama...thank Asuka Kazama” and fly off the same way. Jin could do the same but not be as personal by sending help if her dojo is attacked. The whole town would know that this dojo is under protection by G Corporation AND Mishima Zaibatsu, thus, getting Feng Wei off her back, and also giving her an excuse not to be strong enough to defeat every person. She can focus on using her influence in more ways than just punching. She could have a plot to help her city as well because of Kazuya’s obvious and Jin's reluctant bias towards her. She would tell Jin stories of Kazuya saved her from Heihachi and said those words and this would anger Jin as it shows that either Kazuya is not all evil...or he still is (as they act the same way)...which would annoy Jin to no end as it would show that Asuka still has hope for Kazuya and maybe he is going about things the wrong way. Kazuya would be closer to her than Jin is...ironically, even though she and Jin are Kazama blood. Her greatest conflict would be Kazuya's and Jin's fights because she knows that one of them will eventually kill the other if they don't stop. She would see the good in both of them and in a climactic battle, she stands between the two of them and they hold their punches inches away from different sides of her head. Then Jin loses control and goes Devil and Kazuya does the same to match his power and Asuka over powers them both with the light that she doesn't even know she has. Kazuya and Jin part because she loses consciousness and needs help. They'll kill each other at the next tournament. (Okay, I wrote a lot more than I thought I would, but hey...it's a better story than Tekken 7 😂)

Great video again, Snake :) Yes, i agree i think there was always something going on with Asuka and her power that turned Jin back from his devil form. But sadly her character has been relegated useless with pointless rivalry with Lili. Basically almost every Tekken character is a wasted potential at this point. Also Harada's favoritism of Heihachi and trying to make him sympathetic rubs me the wrong way. I don't know what Mr. Harada was trying to accomplish by making Heihachi into "misunderstood good guy". Heihachi has tried to murder every member of his family. He overthrew his father, imprisoned him and left him starve to death and he wasn't even tainted, he killed Michelle's father, unleashed Ogre that attacked Jun who is either dead or missing, planned for world domination, etc. That's not how you make your main villain sympathetic. Its not like Severus Snape who is on evil side but is secretly helping out the good guys. Heihachi has shown no remorse or regret for his actions. Harada, get your head out of your ass.

Even though Asuka is related to Jun and is supposed to have the same angelic powers that Jun had (we only saw in a non-canon ending), the character is wasted simply for sheer comic relief. Even though she has very serious motivations such as avenging her hospitalized father and detaining a genocidal relative, she never achieved her goals, all her endings without exception are gag (three of which are dedicated to one-sidede Lili's rivalry). Asuka is just a teenager with no relevant connection to the other Kazamas (she probably doesn't even know who Jun is). I can't see how she could fit into the main plot of Tekken 8, Asuka has nothing to do with Jin, most likely Jun will return to the game, already has an exorcist with angelic powers at her disposal. So more likely we’ll spend more time watching Asuka lose her time with Lili bullshit.

Awesome, we're FINALLY about to tackle some Tekken bullshit on this channel! I've been waiting for this day, lol. As a fan of both Asuka and Lili, this has been one of my biggest complaints about Tekken since T6. I may love me some yuri/rivalry between these two girls because I'm admittedly a perv, but I hate how it's obvious they just shoehorned this rivalry together (and it may have been the reason they even created Lili in T5DR in the first place), JUST so that Harada could have a Tekken equivalent of Sakura & Karin from Street Fighter. Unfortunately, they just completely sidetracked the very reason why Asuka was introduced into the series in the first place (to be Jun's story and gameplay replacement, abet younger and spunkier) and there is just no excuse for that. It also is a disservice to Lili, since it basically doomed her almost right from the start to only being around in the games as the resident fanservice girl of Tekken without any true story relevance to the overall scheme of things, instead of doing things in regards to 'protecting' her family's conglomerate like she was doing in T5DR and in the backstory/scenario campaign of T6 (...and the less said about her and Eliza, the better....) I don't think Tekken Project seems to understand why Capcom's version works as it does, but the clear difference between the two pairs is that Sakura and Karin actually have (positive, but what's important is at least SOME form of) development in their eventually friendly rivalry from SFA3 to SF5, and it doesn't take away from their individual relevance in the plot or motivations. Lili and Asuka only exist for each other the instant Asuka beat Lili during T5DR's tournament, and that's it. Everything else that may have been of interest to them individually has been put on hold since 2008 just to push their (practically lesbian at this point) rivalry together, and it's gone nowhere of importance, only to straight up anime fanservice. It's been 2 canon games after T5DR, Harada. Get your shit together with the Kazama bloodline already... and bring Jun back while you're at it.

Lili completely destroyed Asuka's character. She basically went from being a totally unique developed, and sensible character, to a plaything to the worst character ever to come into Tekken. This might be my biased hatred towards Lili, but she adds nothing interesting to the story. She basically started as trying to defend her father's business from bankruptcy from the Mishima Zibatsu, only to turn to a senseless rivalry to what could have been a key character to the Kazama story line. Makes me think Tekken's story would've thrived without Lili. Again, maybe my bias, but Lili is an utter disappointment to the series.

I agree. As much as I like Lili's design and fighting style, she really fucked over Asuka majorly. That's it. Like what else can be done with her? Lili didn't do much to hurt her character, because Asuka herself was never taken seriously even in Tekken 5 itself. So really, Lili is just being used to continue making Asuka into a joke, and if there was no Lili, chances are she'd still be a joke (If you use Tekken 6's high amount of joke endings as evidence), only a different kind.

Something that could've worked if say they dropped Asuka but kept Lili?

@@decadentgamer3108 She has *potential* to be "main center", potential that isn't being used, and potential being wasted is 99% of the cast, not just her, and even if she has "more potential" than everyone else, it's ultimately irrelevant until it's used, because any character can suddenly become important. If anything, you can even say that there's no point to Asuka anymore since Claudio exists, he actually knows that devil gene exists, and actually hunts demons and other shit, but Claudio was pointless in Tekken 7 too (He was hilariously advertised as being important to the story, but in the game itself he just drops some obvious advice and leaves, pretty much making no difference), so no, Asuka isn't bringing anything more than Lili, she only seemingly has more potential with what Tekken 5 showed, and again, Tekken 5 itself made her more of a joke than anything, so she's actually just as pointless as Lili, even if her fans don't want to admit it.

I’ve been craving Tekken story content on here for YEARS now. I’m so excited that you’re covering Tekken characters now 👏🏿👏🏿

Poor Asuka. She had so much potential as a character. She could’ve been a great character with a lot more presence in the storyline. That manga you showed sadly did more for her than every game she’s been in. While I don’t blame Lili directly for this, I really wish the two did not have a shoehorned rivalry that was only done to parody Street Fighter and to sell merchandise. Both characters would have benefited so much more as standalone characters that follow there own narratives. It’s awful for Asuka especially since the Kazama power she showed in her T5 ending was basically retconned despite her father being Jun’s Brother. Why’d you have to do my girl so dirty, Harada?

Man finally someone talks about it i'm so frustrated with they handled asuka and i thought no one would ever talk about it. Making her have a rivalry with lili was the biggest mistake they ever made. You have a character with great potential just wasted on a shitty rivalry. Tekken story is going to shit with characters doing things that doesn't make sense. And yeah the tekken community doesn't talk a lot about tekken on youtube unfortunately. If i had the materials i need i would do so much videos about tekken and how bad the story got but also some of the good things that came out of it. And thanks for this video asuka is my favorite female in tekken.

Asuka Kazama should have been a main eventer since Tekken 5 but you know, make her irrelevant to the story despite carrying the bloodline of her cousin. I love Tekken more than any other fighting games but they really drop the ball post Tekken 5. Damn you Namco for favouring E-Sports instead of making the Tekken storyline better. Thanks Snake for shining the light Tekken after your Wasted Potential on Ayane and the Dead or Alive series.

and this is still relevant in Tekken 8 😞

Honestly, I think Xiaoyu is a great wasted opportunity for Tekken ever since the Blood Vengeance movie or whatever one where she was a gimmick.

Asuka is the biggest waste in Tekken history. I was excited to see what they would do with her after Tekken 5, but they've done nothing with her since except have her fight with Lili in every game since to fuel some ship between them or something. Sub-Zero: "Such wasted potential."

4th Snake: What the hell happened to the series man, honestly? Me: It's slowly starting to turn into the MK Storyline.
@Mateus_Carvalho4 жыл бұрын
Might've happened, tbh. Harada probably heard that MK's rebooted history was pretty good in the first one from someone who was maybe a bit too over-enthusiastic and started to take notes. Granted nobody told him shit was already going downhill over there but eh.

@@Mateus_Carvalho Yeah, because of MK9 presuming success with redefining story mode in fighting games, every fighting game is trying to shit their own versions of it; Tekken, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, you name it but they all manage to fall short of what makes story, well, good.

Yeah and Harada's favoritism of Heihachi really shows. He tried to paint him as sympathetic and heroic despite the fact the all the evil shit he has done. He freaking murdered his own father who had no devil in him. I'm sorry but it freaking failed. I felt no sympathy towards Heihachi and he is still insane madman who tried to take over the world. This is soo much better then what is in the real game. I was actually hoping this(Or something similar) would happen in the game, she meets jin and fights but loses then comes back to try and free him. Really was sad when she didn't meet Jin at all, so that was a waste of a good ark
@eastreddragon4 жыл бұрын
Something to note: Harada retconned that Jin and Asuka were first cousins, they're more just 'of the same kin' now. Which is stupid and asinine, but it does at least explain why Jin went to Heihachi and not Asuka's family.

Ya know, Tekken 7 kinda "plotentially wasted" every character that didn't have Mishima as a last name
