The trick to Kirito's "revival" scene is animation - it's same thing we had in episode 1 when he *imagined* himself dying to a boar. If you rewatch both, you'll see the impluls to set his body moving was one of a boar attack, not sword stuck in his chest, he didn't loose Asuna's rapier, and his animation of gaining transparency only began after.. animators made it needlessly overcomplicated to just show his *willpower* to come back, it was all in his head. And yes, willpower is what's stronger than numerical strength is the idea throughout SAO. Asuna managed to break through her paralysis, Kirito - managed to prolong his death animation for as long as it took to hit Kayaba, who then recognize what they've done and didn't dodge the attack. May be not up to everyone's taste, but it is a nice romantic story this way, and it was made as such originally. As for why Kirito and Asuna survived, we can only guess, but it's rather obvious that Kayaba didn't want to kill either of them. It's not like he had time to setup this platform in the middle of discussion - it must've been always the plan, to have one last discussion with whoever would fight him in the end. Why did Kayaba chose to kill all those people? We can only guess, but my best bet would be, is that he wanted to make that world "real", and reality of death was the strongest tool he had. This is based on Kirito's comment about SAO and Kayaba's explanation on why dead cannot return. Hope you'll have fun with future episodes :)

SAO has a game called Sword Art Online Re: Hollow Fragment which is an alternate universe from the anime and light novels which the game's story is written by Reki Kawahara (LN author) where a glitch occurred during Kirito's duel with Heathcliff on the 75th boss floor so instead of clearing the game, Kirito and the other players are still trapped and finds out they still have to reach Floor 100 to clear the game. The game also introduces 2 original characters (Strea and Philia).

not an LN reader, but "power of will" is because of the part of the brain called "Fluctlight", something that would be explained in season 3.. SAO incident lead to many discoveries, FLuctlight was one of them

Kayaba does basically say in the first episode that he wanted to play God in a world of his own creation, with the players being like his playthings to watch fight through his game. In this episode he talks about his childhood dream of creating a world that surpassed human limitations, and that gets talked about more in later seasons. A running theme in SAO is human will and how it can achieve extraordinary things, even being able to transcend a game's limitations and influence it in many ways.

The reason why he locked players in was to make his steel castle a reality, a real isekai with real death and a real feeling with no interference from the original world. he wanted the deepest point of escapism from his original world, or so i think

remember the 10 second revival item? it basically says that the game has to wait for atleast 10 seconds before frying the brain or the item wouldnt work.. so maybe thats how kirito survived since game got cleared within 10 seconds of him dying

@@TooHarshForYou the 10 seconds were referring to the time it takes between receiving the damage and all the animations to occure - such as health bar going down, gaining transparency and then falling into polygonal shards. The trick of the scene was, that when Anime shown Kirito break into polygons - the transparency didn't even start. They tried to be smart and reused animation from episode 1 just Kirito being in new clothes to show that he just imagining himself dying there. There's no rapier in his hand, the impulse to throw him backwards is that of a boar from animation in episode 1 rather than a sword stuck in his chest... Only after all this, do we see him with rapier in the hand, transparency starting up. The feat there, was Kirito prolonging this animation through his will and making the avatar move in it, inspired by Asuna who managed to break paralysis this way. Still his avatar died in the end.. but from there it's for Kayaba to decide whether to actually kill him or not. It's really that simple.

@@TooHarshForYou I wrote it down as an old comment for this video before, but in short - everything points to Kayaba planning on teleporting whoever would be defeated by him in the end. He didn't have the time to make the platform all 3 of them teleported to in the end, it must've been already there. The destruction of SAO was also part of the plan and began as soon as both arrived there. He only ever planned to fight a singular "hero" in a duel. Logically, anyone he'd kill would be transported onto preplanned platform rather than fry the brain, for one final discussion. From there it was his decision whether to kill them or not and he decided they won and are free to go.

@@TooHarshForYou it's just like in murder mystery episode, just no cheap tricks with covering the animation - as an actual developer of SAO he simply replaced brain frying sequence with teleportation upon any avatar death he would cause. At least that's what clues are pointing at

10:49 kirito basically lost when he used the dual wielding skill, he was doing fine until the point he got hit in the cheek and gave into his arrogance and used the skill. thats why kayaba grinned a little when he did that.

In the novels Kirito moved so fast the moment before his death that he was able to kill Kayaba. It's part of a system that will make a return in season 3 onwards. Basically it's Matrix there is no spoon, exert your will onto the system and overwrite it.

There is a theory that Kayaba deactivated the system, so he could talk with Kirito afterwards or to protect himself. That would also explain Asuna survival

I always believed that Asuna survived because Kayaba promised Kirito that she couldn't 💀 herself, which she kinda did as a sacrifice. Whereas Kirito lived cuz the NerveGear didn't have time to fry him. So kinda similar.

Kayaba made it so people died for real, because when people have no choice but to live in the game and dying in-game means dying IRL that's the ultimate thing that makes his world REAL. Otherwise people would just log in and out like in WoW and not take it seriously. Pretty well written reason for an insane genious nerd like Kayaba.

After watching S3 you'll be able to understand "will" power more and it'll make more sense. P2 of 1st season has plenty of epic moments, but some softies can't handle some crap that happens with the next villain, so that's why it has a bad rep.

When i first watched sao i was so young i couldn't care less why did Kayaba kill so many people and more so the pill that he just wanted to create a castle like the one in his dreams and have us sympathize with him (mass murderer btw)

He locked everyone in to make the world real. However, you decided to live in SAO made it real. if you decide to kill people, you would literally be a murderer. If you wanted to hunt monsters or do jobs to earn money and buy food or a house and live in peace, you could do that. By locking people in made this everyone's reality. The Two years of experience there is a part of them now it's their history just like WAR Veterans.

This is the place where this history should have ended. This series had some moments after this, but in general it felt (at least for me) like a series in decadence

The entire series is wasted potential. We have great music and animation that is wasted by shitty writing and worldbuilding. I don't know if it's the source material or the adaptation, but the writing is sloppy. Presenting some principles of how the world works only to completely ignore them a few episodes later is unfortunately a daily occurrence throughout the series. The whole series would be much better if the characters stayed in SAO for 2-3 seasons. It was definitely the best part of the series, not counting the second part of S2.
