It took a few re-watches for me to connect that the system cant kill you for at least 10 seconds after an in-game death because of the resurrective item... and thats why Kirito and Asuna survived

In the moment Kayaba turned off his Immortality to fight against Kirito, in this moment he also turn off the system who kills Players after they HP falls to zero, this is why they survived

Also, the terror in Kirito's eyes, as he thinks Asuna may not have made it out, was so intense. I would have left, looking for my love, too!

So when Kirito sees the "You're Dead" window pop up, we then see another sort of "what if" scene like the first episode when we saw Kirito die by the boar in the field. He hadn't actually fallen back and disintegrated like Asuna had yet. Remember that Asuna lingers for a few seconds after she's been dealt her final hit, so Kirito has those few seconds and uses the his final moments to strike down Kayaba. As for the scene where the three of them meet up, I've figured that the nerve gear takes a minute or two to actually recognize that the person wearing it has been killed in game so this is the purgatory. Everyone who died in game likely had this same final moments looking over Aincrad. Kayaba then uses these moments to override the system and keep both Kirito and Asuna from being killed while allowing his nerve gear to carry on. I believe that it was confirmed that Kayaba did indeed intervene to save the both of them.

12:37 The NerveGear doesn’t kill the player *immediately* after their HP reaches zero. There’s a bit of a delay between their HP reaching zero and the NerveGear killing them. The game was cleared within that delay, so Asuna wasn’t killed by the NerveGear. Same goes for Kirito himself(though, him coming back like he did before finishing Kayaba was just willpower)

It might have also just been the Item Kirito gave Klein that revived a player within 10 seconds of their death.

It explains more thoroughly in the LN. it was Kirito’s will power, overpowering and defying the game and the system. Also, you could imply that Kayaba spared Kirito and Asuna out of respect and for clearing the game, as he does tell them he wanted a chance to speak to them after the game was cleared

As I can see it, the 'heaven' area was a waiting area because of the resurrection item. I assume since the game was ended its rules were suspended as well, but also Kayaba was still alive so he could have just as easily suspended the rules at that point.

the heaven is atcually an area for those who died to have a moment to process and cope before they get fried pretty sure the revival item only works between your hp hitting zero and you exploding

Asuna isn’t her last name it’s her first name. It’s the other way around in Japan; last name first, then first name after. So it’s “Asuna Yukki” and “Kazuto Kirigaya”

I think Kirito‘s voice actor is extremely talented. One of his best performances, in my opinion, was in NGNL the movie at the end.

We dont actually know how long it takes from 0HP to actually dyeing. Maybe once you hit 0HP it takes much more than 10s before you die. I would imagine the scanner in the nerve gear helmet cant instantly release a sufficiently strong EM wave to fry the brain, instead it needs to buffer the energy for a while. In that time, who knows where the players are and what they see. Who knows what ever it is. So we dont need to smash our brains about the timeframe here

see that loading progress on their screens, kayaba included , once that reaches 100, its poof, but they got yeeted out due to the game ending before completion so , they didnt die

So finally you've completed the first Arc, the Sword Art Online arc. This when it released made everything else in the anime world just halt pretty much. It became massive instantly, and then with the midseason finale it was a massive deal. Glad you enjoyed it! PS --- When Kayaba says he was going to be floor 100s final boss.... he wasn't 😉 You may see the real Floor 100 boss in future. hehe..

No. Kayaba was really going to be the floor 100 boss. He was going to take that boss's place because he believed it was too strong.

I fing love this episode. The sheer stakes of hat fight are so epic. Also, even though we all know there is more DAO, I LOVE the possibility of the 2 MCs dying before the first season enda. THAT is something I legit wanna see; MC dies, yet the story goes on. I think I've seen that haooen in an anime in the last 2 years, but i just can't remember. I want another of those. I always figured, like another comment sai, that thos who die get a minute to cope/freak out about their impending end, up in the sky, like humans often think we go after death. Also, I considered that Kiyaba either interferred with thise two actually passing, or he had it set yp so whomever lost their life while defeating him got to chill as a dead person, until thw game ended all the way. Regardless, seeing Kirito and Asuna fade away, truly believing that they, a couple of Japanese teenagers, who just wanted to try a new game, but got trapped and tormented, were totally dying together, and their emotuons, was such a powerful scen, especially with SAO being like the 6th or 7th anime I'd ever watched. I really look forward to the WILDroad agead for ya, Angel. More death, love, emotional breakdowns, sweet moments of solace, and utter despair are on the way!

We can say that Kirito was not actually dead at the moment his HP drop as it was probably his imagination. Plus Asuna probably alive because we need to remember there is delay when NerveGear would fry their brain. Like the revival item, there's rule that they need to use within 10 seconds. Thats when i believe enough time for Kirito to do one last stab and kill Kayaba. Overall,. love your reaction man hahahaha i laughed when you shocked that Heathcliff is Kayaba hahaha

One theory no one thinks about regarding why Asuna lives. Remember, Kayaba grants Kirito’s request that Asuna can’t kill herself. By throwing herself in front of Kayaba’s kill shot, that, in a sense, could be interpreted as an attempt to kill herself, thus activating the request

1:20 No, there are no bows in SAO(the game, not the anime). In one of the video games, SAO: Hollow Fragment, they a Tay ally address this by going into an alternate timeline where a character that doesn’t show up until *after* they escape this game ends up appearing in this game and being the only person in the game with a bow.

To me I wish there was a scene where asuna wonder why she didn’t really die when she lost all her health and kayaba explain. Kayaba: you see I actually in quick time hack your nerve gear and stop the shock procedure, cause I wanted to see how my fight with kirito play out if he win I canceled the shock procedure but if he lose you both die at the same time. Kayaba: in my surprise when I thought you lost you actually did the impossible and after you defeated me I decided the cancel both your shock procedure. So yes you two are alive and especially you asuna. Good idea right

i guess Kayaba rewards for them clearing the game together, he made it so that the nerve gear wouldn't fry their brain at the moment of their death, i wouldn't know how the hell he would be able to do it, but i don't have a better guess (and yes, i've already seen the show, but it won't be explained as far as i remember).

@@luigimanzelli3786 it's not literally explained, what is written is that spoiler . . . . he managed (with what we learn later on the incarnation system) to slow down his hp loss. the anime ruined it showing up some kind of resurrection. kirito did only imagine his death animation, but it didn't tecnically happen, he remained in that glitched fuzzy state as for why kirito and asuna go to that floating space after the death, it's because kayaba wanted to talk to them, because they both showed him that something, they both won over the system

@@lordmuaddib that doesn't seem consistent tho, Kirito's HP where shown to be dropping to zero, even if we want to somehow make it fly that Kirito didn't actually die but survived with 1HP, Asuna was definetely dead in the game, so why is she alive in the real world, i think the only possible explanations is Kayaba's intervention personally.

at that moment there was both an overall narration and speculation by kirito, it wasn't clearly spelled like A+B=C. it was clear it didn't explode in pieces like in the anime tho, he did think about it while his hp was going down. you can check out the light novels :) for asuna we can speculate that the frying process doesn't start immidiatly and kayaba stopped it as soon as heatcliff died. or that he did actually lock her before as kirito asked him to do. before the fight, kirito saw heatcliff fiddle with control panels to set hps at the same level. maybe it was there? but in any case he saved them both because they both went beyond (asuna with the paralisys and all). kayaba just didn't tell them and he let them think they would die with sao's distruction saluti!
