This PC powers on but nothing happens apart from the fans spin. This is NOT a component level repair, unlike most of my videos. But it needs fixing anyway, so let's see what is wrong with it.
It takes a lot of time and effort to make KZbin videos. If you enjoy my videos or they helped you with your own repairs please consider subscribing to my channel or click LIKE

Great video Richard. Great find so it was probably oxidized contacts on the memory cards or in the slots. About that thing. In the Dutch language in holland we call that a "gum". I know that in the english language "gum" is related to chewing gum. But in Holland "gum" has a total different meaning. Some pencils have that on the backside and is used to erase the written pencil grafite on paper. You can also buy separate small blocks of "gum" without the pencil for the same erasing on paper.

Probably oxidized contacts yes. Interesting in dutch this thing on the pencil is called a 'gum' and I raised an eyebrow at the thought of chewing one LoL! We called this thing on the pencil (or indeed a separate block as you mention) a rubber as I said on the video - not to be confused with a that other 'thing' which was called a johnny or a durex Google: What is Johnny slang for? 1. (often capital) informal. a man or boy; chap. 2. a slang word for condom. Collins English Dictionary.

Been there quite a lot of times. The customer asks for a quote to fix their PC or laptop before actually fixing it. That is so hard to do because you need to find the cause in the first place and verify the fault by replacing or repairing that component. Before you know it, it is fixed. The best I can do is charge for time if no component needs replacing or time and the cost of component(s) as necessary. But this is where it can get sticky. The customer refuses to pay and demands it back. Not because you have overcharged but the customer has decided not to go ahead. What can you do ?. Remove the repaired component and refit the faulty one which requires more unpaid time or if it's a bad connection of RAM for instance, do you take the RAM out and swipe it between your rear cheeks a few times before refitting it?. Simply giving the item back as working only benefits the customer as a free repair. You have the best answer. Charge and agree a decent minimum before looking at it then at least it covers you for your time. To me, the object you wear to prevent babies is a 'Johnny'. The top end of a pencil is a 'rubber'. Off subject a black coloured board you chalk on in schools is a 'blackboard'. Some sick people think it's a racist word. To me it is the opposite of a whiteboard (which has never been challenged) but I'll leave it at that.
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy P Actually whiteboard is the opposite to blackboard, as the blackboard dates from the mid 1700s and was used in educational settings by the early 1800s. The whiteboard dates from the 1950s or 1960s but was not commonly used in classrooms until the 1990s. Google says that the term blackboard is not racist, anymore than a black marker pen is racist. It's simply a board that is black. The term gradually changed to chalkboard in some regions because they started using green blackboards (greenboards?) in the 1970s or 1980s, and chalkboard was more accurate, not because the original name was racist. It's interesting to hear your comments about quoting for jobs. I think I will stick with my method to make a prior agreement that a repair will be made if it costs less than a certain maximum amount (usually I set €40) though I then often charge less than that if it was something simple and quick. If it is more than the agreed amount I then quote. This get's around the problem of by the time you found the fault you fixed it. If I can't repair it I don't charge (seeing as I couldn't perform the agreed work) which is my fault not the customers. Very occasionally, if i think something has a reasonable chance of repair but the parts are expensive I will offer the customer the option to pay for the parts and clearly state I can not 100% guarantee it will fix the problem or that the fix will be permanent. A good example of this was an FM radio transmitter from the radio station practically opposite my workshop. It was clear the RF output transistor had exploded, a replacement part was about €170 and I did not have the equipment to test whether the fault was caused by a problem with the transmission antenna or cabling or some other external cause. In this sort of case, which is rare, I offer a repair at the clients own risk.

Heya, business is business that you don't ask for the highes price oke but you still spend you time on it. and if you don't ask too much they might come back more often with more businnes. like you said with the car boot sale "keeping friends"

Always give an estimate (even if on the high side slightly) in the beginning; that will immediatelly take care of those unwilling/incapable of paying you for what the repair will actually cost in the end. Now since that didn't happen, charge him for your time, something reasonable; if he gives you a hard time (for whatever reason) just give it back and forget about it (and him).
@LearnElectronicsRepair

Actually as it turns out I charged for my time and the customer was happy to pay as it was an inexpensive repair. I did also suggest that now was a good time for me to get another 1TB HDD and make a complete clone/backup of his drive with all the OS, apps and valuable data on it. I thought €60 would be a reasonable price to do that, but I have not heard yet if he wants me to do so. It is interesting to see how valuable the valuable/irreplaceable data actually is :D

Personally, I would have an inspection fee, chargeable whether there is a fix or not, which at least covers some of your time / labour. This sets the customer's expectations as to what the minimum would be. Then a pre-stated hourly rate plus any parts cost.
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ralph J. Yeah a lot of places charge a fixed fee just for inspection even if they can not complete the repair. My personal view, rightly or wrongly, is that if you offer a no fix no fee service you attract more customers, get more of the 'easy' jobs as well (because the customer does not like to risk a fee for inspection and possibly get 'nothing' in return) and the extra business gained offsets the time 'wasted' in jobs you can't complete. Of course to make that work you have to know when to put a job down and go no further with it. Mostly still, the repair work I do is based on the buy-fix-sell model It's interesting to hear others opinions on this, and find out how they work.

Hi. I also have that problem i have amibios. I tried to remove components one by one then when i removed the ram and i turned it on i hear beeping continuously. I bought a new ram and it works fine. I was curious why everytime i open my pc it runs the bios start up so i try to read something it says that my cmos is not working so i bought a new cmos battery. Another day i turned on my pc and bios came up i want to press f1 but accidentally i pressed f2 so it turned black screen with blinking cursor and nothing is happening i have no choice but to turn it off by holding the power button and unplugging the power cord. Turned on again the pc but nothing is happening. It is now the same with the video again but when i tried to remove the ram it doesn't beep anymore. Tried to reset the cmos by removing the battery and used clr cmos jumper. But nothing happens just fans spinning no beeps no bios no monitor no usb. I dont know what to do

this a common faulty Richard due to RAM when no beeps no boot no picture, first thing i do to take off ram and check if MB give beep for no ram then clean it as you did, hope in future you can explain about voltage injection how and where it can be done

@@LearnElectronicsRepair in general if we want to do voltage injection, how to decide the right portion and points of injection
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair 3 жыл бұрын
@@learngamecheating You inject the voltage at the point where you can see there is a short circuit - the above video will give you a good idea how and when this is appropriate. The correct voltage, well you have to use the evidence available - from a good working board, from the datasheet of a voltage regulator, and similar ways. If you simply can not determine the correct voltage, use a low voltage such as 1V

Richard do you have an idea what could be a reason for drop voltage on atx power supply cooling fan from 12V to 3V when you connect the cooling fan to it, and ofcource when it's already connected the atx PSU is on and there's output voltage but the fan not spinning
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair 3 жыл бұрын
Basically there are only three reasons for a voltage supply, like that to a fan, to drop 1. The load is drawing too much current 2. The supply can't supply enough current (basically the supply impedance is too high) 3. The supply is designed that way, for example a fan that only runs when certain conditions are met e.g. the PSU reaches a certain temperature So the best way is first to try another fan, and if that does not help, trace the circuit that supplies power to the fan to see how it works

@@LearnElectronicsRepair well Richard what do you think about that, when connecting 12V fan to 5V output line the voltage drop to 3V and the fan doesn't spin, but when connecting another 12V fan to 12V output line, both fans spin and 5V output line give 5V instead of 3, what is the explanation of this case
