to quickly identify problems...1) look for the light of the motherboard it is in the middle green or yellow.. that has to be lit when powered on..2) look for bulging capacitors..it takes only 1 for not booting at all...look all capacitors small and bigger sizes if they are bulging motherboard is dead..the cap can be replaced unsoded and put a new one and sod it

THANK YOU! Nice one mate! This worked perfectly for me by: (1) Removing and replacing the CMOS battery (I tested it with a battery life tester and I didn't need a new battery). (2) Moving the CMOS jumper back and forth (I waited 4 mins before putting it back in its original position). (3) Booting from a Win startup/repair CD then, when prompted with the option to do so, loading the 'CMOS default settings'.

Andrew Wessell Andrew Wessell Andrew Wessell If your computer powers on but for a mere second or two and then immediately powers down, It sounds like your motherboard is developing a short circuit due to contact with the metal casing. Most likely it has to do with the screws and metal mounting stands (supports) that your motherboard sits on. The cheapest way to fix this problem is to introduce cardboard washers between the screws and where they make contact to the motherboard, or you can buy plastic mounting supports at a computer shop. Alternatively, you can always Breadboard it: 1)place the motherboard with CPU+Fan on wood or non-shiny cardboard 2)connect all of the case connectors to the board's panel 3)with a power bar that is OFF connect the PC power cable from the power bar to the power supply and the power supply to the board 4)while NEVER touching any exposed component,power on the power bar and press the power switch on the case.If the problem still persists,one of the remaining components is probably defective.Power off the power bar before dismantling I cover breadboarding in greater detail in this video: Advanced troubleshooting technique tutorial of how to possibly fix a PC that will not beep at boot

Sometimes my computer will start for a few seconds, then shut off- other times it starts fine, goes to desktop- can do some things, then it shuts down and won't start again- powers on but powers off OR just sits there with fans running, but computer not starting up.I've tried clearing cmos- put in new battery, tested all peripherals like psu ram, vid card sound card etc by trying other ones in it- tried new cpu heatsink, etc- shut off all extra fans etc- Tried starting with no dvd, no anything except hard-drive really- still nothingComputer still acts funny- won't start, then I unplug everything for several days and all of sudden computer starts again, runs for awhile, then powers off- it's just acting very wierd

You are a bloody lifesaver. After not getting any signal on three different monitors (and a TV) even though the PC booted up and everything was working, I was worried (and possibly a bit pissed since I ordered the PC from another country) that either my GPU or mobo are dead, and was ready to return the whole thing. Charles Flippen I've seen this issue with Dell PCs before. Well, your troubleshooting steps were thorough, and sadly I haven't much else to suggest. I guess as a last ditch attempt (if the PC isn't on warranty anymore) you could always try breadboarding the PC or rebuilding the PC in an opposite sense (see Advanced troubleshooting technique tutorial of how to possibly fix a PC that will not beep at boot )

Your problem is the same as that which is shown in the video (this is how some PCs react to this problem). That being said, try what is shown in the video: disconnect the power cable, remove the CMOS battery, short the CMOS jumper pins for 9 seconds then return the jumper cap to its initial position (only if you can find these jumper pins; if not, skip this step), press your PC's chassis power button switch (to discharge any remaining power circulating in the system), leave the PC unplugged and in this state overnight, then the next day return the CMOS battery to its socket, power up the PC, and if no beep, then disconnect the power cable, press your PC's chassis power button switch (to discharge any remaining power circulating in the system), remove one component, power up the PC, and if no beep then repeat (each time unplugging the PC, pressing the power switch to discharge remaining power, removing a remaining component, and then powering up, and this until the PC beeps at boot).If it never beeps, even when you are down to just motherboard, power supply & CPU+fan, one of these remaining components may be bad

RodneyDickson, You are a genius. You made my day and taught me something that I wanted to learn from a long time. With your easy to understand step by step process, I could revive a virtually dead motherboard. Before this exercise, the motherboard was not beeping and there was no display. A failing FAX modem PCI card and trying to turn the computer ON/OFF few times messed up the motherboard. I removed the CMOS battery and jump the CMOS as you suggested for long enough time. Then when I rebooted the computer I heard one short and one long beep. I didn't have a hard drive and mouse connected at that time. After connecting a HDD and a mouse when I started the computer, I got a single beep and I could go to the BIOS setup and see and set everything. The computer worked. Thanks a lot. Keep it up.

I am experiencing a strange issue . Some days back I found out that my computer was getting hot and therefore I decided to reapply the thermal paste and replace the stock cooler with cooler master hyper 121 led. I did replace the stock thermal paste ( removed it by 95% Iso propylene alcohol) then applied artic silver 5 compound (pea size method), and finally attached the aftermarket 121 cooler master hyper cooler. Finally checking all things at their place and seated neatly, I booted up the computer , however I did not not got the post beep sound (1 beep) - the CPU fan was running , the GPU fan was running but there was no display on the screen. My motherboard has a built in error code embedded card which showed code 77 error. So, I switched off everything and began to inspect by removing every component one by one , but all in vain , the problem persists. Then after a while , when I was not getting any solution , I reseated every component back again and booted up the computer still no response got code 77. Then I again switched off and tried to again boot up -I did this procedure "on and off" 2 to 3 times - and suddenly out of the blue the computer booted without any error (heard the pleasant 1 post beep sound). Then my computer ran very smooth like no problem occurred at all. Next morning, again the same problem - no boot , no sound , CPU fan running and getting annoying code 77 error . This time I did not opened up the hood however I did switch off then waited for 20 sec. and again boot the computer -got same error - again switched off and boot - got same error, so, I repeated this switch off and boot method for exact 7 times and about ,say, 25 minutes my computer boot without any error, and ran perfectly. I am not getting what actually the issue is. Please please help me to figure out the problem

Your PSU may be too weak to properly run your PC. Pulled out another desktop PC I had setting for a while. Not sure what would happen. Powered it up, after I tested the PSU with a PS testing that they sell. Checked out good. The Unit turned on, did not beep, or monitor turned on. Went through the procedure you explained as best as I could. Viola ..... 2nd PC in two days booted up & monitor displayed screen. XP . Will have to update the OS. It's an older build but it will serve as a back up and/or standby. Pretty remarkable. Thanks for taking the time to post. Have a couple of more setting around that I have to get to. There are PC analyzers sold and PS testers haven't found anybody that can say how reliable these gadgets are? Thank you! You made my day. Getting stuck at the Windows logo sounds like the operating system might have become corrupt. Did you try booting the OS in safe mode? Alternate pressing F5 and F8 repeatedly after booting the PC?

This video was the only thing that helped when my computer suffered the same problems following a fall yesterday. I followed the steps, and, as I hoped, it was the RAM; so thankfully just a case of swapping the memory round. And the computer appears to working OK now. PLEASE HELP ME ! My pc had BSOD problem and I looked for solutions ,,Theres a way to clear bios ... to remove cmos battery and move jumper pins ... I removed battery and also took out the jumper and put it long in clr bios 1&2 pin .... and I also moved the other jumper which has 7 pins .... at first it opens and says bios has been reset something like that then I moved the pin again .... now my pc wont turn on anymore ,only power button light and fan and the yellow green light in the plug near motherboard ............. Are you sure you placed the jumpers back in their initial placements? Thermal paste is necessary between the GPU chip and the heatsink. If your graphics card heatsink came factory installed, then there was a substitute to thermal paste between the two (generally a black coloured tape of sorts between the two). Video cards die out with time and after they have been pushed too hard: chances are yours was just due to go, that's all

The freezing after use can be a multitude of things: the CPU overheating, the operating system being corrupt, the memory being bad, the hard drive having bad sectors, the power supply being faulty, etc. This is how you can test the memory: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3PCnYiNZtR1ibc Also, Hiren's BootCD has many freeware testing softwares that may shed some light on the issue.

disconnect the power cable, press your PC's chassis power button switch (to discharge any remaining power circulating in the system), and then with tweezers or needle-nose pliers you can rebend these pins in the proper configuration (VERY IMPORTANT: ENSURE THEY ARE NOT LEFT CROSSED AND TOUCHING EACH OTHER) and if this is impossible to do or they break off, you should have another FAN power connector on the motherboard elsewhere that you can use.

You are the man!! had an issue with my desktop. The issue was the same as yours, the RAM was producing the problem. Changed the order of the RAM and now the computer starts with all the RAM it had before, just in a different order. FYI, I had to look up another video on how to put the RAM back, but you should take 98% of the credit. Thank you Sir.

My computer would not post, just the fans spun up. It would not shut down from the from panel reset button either. After watching the video I tested all the power supply output pin voltages as described in a 24 pinout diagram. I then removed the cmos battery, did the jumper as described, removed all peripherals, USB connectors & memory sticks as described in the video. I waited about 10 minutes then put the cmos jumper back in the normal position. I started up the machine and just the fans spun up. I left the machine running for about 45 minutes (because I moved along to the next problem of my day. My attention was drawn back to my machine when it gave out a long continuous beep. I shut it down, added the cmos battery, ram and monitor and it did boot. Your video saved my life in a way. I tried doing the same technique to fix my Computer. That I built its just over a year old. I got home one day and no screen no usb output or anything but, fans running. I Then found your video. Tried all that. Put my stuff back together and tried other power supply. Behold I thought it was the power supply. However when I put the old Power Supply back in it worked again. I think When I went to Jump the CMOS on the motherboard. I wasn't giving it enough time and or there might have been static build up or bad connection. Works now. when I followed your steps all is good now. I think its because I took out the ram and let the battery stay out while I jumped the MB CMOS. I left The battery in and computer off when I jumped it before. Been about 2 weeks ..... power surge shutdown PC. Started up but no boot up or monitor came back on. Replace PS but nothing. I followed steps outlined in your Video. Jumper ed the fema, etc. 50/50 right. Rather delighted at this time as the PC did come to life and boot up. Will set this back up as my main desktop in the AM and see if everything holds up. I found that My power supply was possibly bad, where as the Beep would work after 2-3 days of not working.. so the cells within were not providing enough power for the Machine to operate thus, failing at power start up.. the good news is the power supply only cost me $50 where as I originally thought my Video card had failed which would have cost over $200 for a porper 3D vid card.. so you saved me $150 with this video alone! =D I love you lol.. I did the cmos trick to the computer and it worked :D I pulled the whole computer apart to clean it (i was told when i got it that there was a issue and didn't work to i thought what the heck) and then u put it back and thought that maybe there was a issue with other things. pulled everything out apart from the power supply and the motherboard and it did the same thing. something was making a ticking sound but i don't know. So i found your video and did the jumper thing and cmos battery just to be safe and then bam, it booted. So thank you so much :)

Hi Rodney, this will be a long message, hope you will be able to solve it tho. Problem(in order of time): - had a windows 10 update, shut down took longer than usual and i was in a hurry so i held onto the power button to turn it off. - following few days had a few occurences of BSOD with different error messages upon starting up. Auto restarted a few times to get it running normally again. Happens once i turn off my pc and turn it on again. - so finally one day it decided to restart and restart and never turn on again. Even power, fan and everything running, but does not run past post. Nothing on screen at all. Things Ive done: - Took out GPU - Took out SDD, HDD - Took out RAM, beep sound - Took out DVD Reader - Change RAM in the slots (only 1 4gb stick) - Clear/reset the CMOS battery via switch and took out the battery for 10mins as well - Bought a new 8GB RAM thinking that its becus of the RAM issue, it did power on the 2nd time after i newly replaced the RAM. 3rd time onwards I plugged everything back in thinking it was working. But was just blank screen again. Took out everything again and tried, swapped ram slots, still nothing. Things that happened: - The PC auto power ons itself after I forced shut it down. Happened a few times. - Auto restart non-stop by itself. On for 3s, off for 7s. Also happened a few times. Background info: I re-used the mobo, ram, cpu and hdd from my previous lenovo H520s. Mayb 4-5yrs ago. Bought gpu, psu and casing. Built them tgt into my current pc. Around 2yrs ago. Works well all the way till now. Reason why i upgraded cus my previous psu was an mini one, atx? It POPPED one day while i was using my pc, surfing youtube. Had a few issues while playing HD games like assassin's creed. Few distorted lines appearing a few times in game. But stopped gaming so didnt really bother about it. Intel Core i5 2320 3.00GHz Lenovo CIH61MI V1.1 Sapphire R7 265 Dual-x Sharetronic DDR3 4GB (Replaced with Crucial 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz) Crucial MX200 SSD 250GB + 1TB Seasonic ATX 620W 80+ Bronze Would truly appreciate it if you could come up with a solution or something. +AntiqueSwift Wow, well, you did try some troubleshooting at least. Sadly it sounds like Windows 10 messed with your BIOS (probably an incomplete system update that was waiting to write code). You are without a doubt a very dedicated person! 18 months worth of comments and you are responding to them - amazing! Well, I'm an old, gray-haired, granny, but I've been interested in computers, robots, etc. ever since I started reading Sci-Fi when I was in the 3rd grade (Mostly Asimov, until I started branching out). So, when I discovered there was a Bally game machine that actually could be programmed, if you didn't mind no hard drive (we had to store and run our programs from a basic little audio recorder) and no keyboard (there was the number key pad, similar to a hand-held calculator except there were buttons across the bottom of the keypad - red, yellow & green - I think . . . memory was damaged when I was disabled and I still miss it like crazy - ha ha! . . . So, you push Red button and the "1" digit for "A", the Yellow button and the "1" digit for "B" and the Green button and the "1" digit for "C", etc.) That's the machine that I learned programming on! Anyway, all this to say that years after that, I was responsible for teaching police officers how to use the new program we'd purchased for our first computers at the department, so I can fully sympathize with you about answering the same questions time after time after time, but that was SOP for anything - I'd get teased a lot because when people would come to ask about other procedures, my standard reply was, "It's in the manual, go look it up; I'm busy." Even though I used to use that info to tease cops with, I already knew that it was simply human nature. If a person can whine and get someone else to do what they were supposed to do or to spoon feed them info - they're going to do that. I often think it's also a delay tactic as then they get to tell others, "Well, I'm waiting for an answer from you know who!" And then, there are people like ourselves (you are so dedicated and your written instructions were very good - didn't need a translator or anything - so I'm guessing we have similar feelings about such things) who try to teach others and we'd be embarrassed and ashamed to behave like WSMs (whining, sniveling, malcontents) when we know the answers are there for us! I also know that there are a fair number of people out there who, for whatever reasons, really did miss the self-taught, research boat and even have problems with comprehension and there's no way I can feel badly or cross about helping them over and over. And, of course, this behavior is not limited to geeky stuff - one of the sites where I watch TV series has a nice comment section and they always have a link to IMDb for the particular show. So, when other viewers start asking such things as, "Who is the person who plays Juana Dough?" or "the actor playing Jojoe is really familiar - what else has he played in?" The comment area is supposed to be used only for giving comments about the actual show, so on top of being stupid questions, they are also against the rules . . . Whatcha gonna do? Find a like minded person and laugh about it is probably the best solution! Anywho, thanks for your kind response and please do not feel obligated to reply to this comment. Heh, I love your 'it's in the manual' response: prior to taking the 1.5 year hiatus, I would lay out possible response scenarios in the Description field of each video page (you can see evidence of this even on this very page) and would systematically copy and paste each response accordingly in order to try to help others in a 'troubleshooting' frame, but since my hiatus I have decided to frequently default to this canned response (which does not apply to this video I feel) 'There are more suggestions in the Description field of this video page as well as suggestions from other viewers in the Comments section of this video page: I sadly know of no other fixes other than these, so turn to these sections for more information. Good luck' which covers all of the bases that I would have previously covered in my step-by-step approach anyway (not to mention that perhaps it will incite viewers to do a bit more reading instead of expecting to be spoon-fed the answers they want to hear). There is no pleasing everyone though: for as many people who don't get enough solutions in the video, there are those who want the answer in a short, 30 second clip, and who quite frankly complain when they actually have to watch a video and have to go through steps and scenarios (I'm thinking that more and more the grand majority of today's youth are being spoiled by access to information, not to mention that they all seem to feel entitled to it...maybe the Internet IS ruining society, but what do I know?) My computer had been working fine the night before. When I turned it on; no beeps, no monitor signal. As it turns out, I just needed to reset the CMOS, and got signal back. Thank you again. Now onto my other problem , resolving a "Bootmgr is missing". Seems like the more i know about computers the more I get new puzzles to solve. :p

+RodneyDickson Yeah and to make it worse, the windows disc wouldnt boot through the dvd-rom despite setting it in bios. Ended up repairing it by making a USB flash drive windows install. For some strange reason it would only boot setting primary boot devise in bios to USB. Once windows was installed I set it back to boot from the HDD and all was well.

The situation with my PC is similar, except it boots up perfectly normal in 2/3 of attempts and then suddenly it refuses -- the power LED lights on but then the fan starts howling like a vacuum cleaner and that's it -- the box doesn't even react to my pressing the power button . So I flick the switch at the wall mains outlet, wait a couple of seconds, switch on the mains again and -- voila ! -- the booting process continues as if nothing's ever happened. This is a HP Compaq dc7900 box Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz 4Gb RAM running Ubuntu Linux, and it looks and behaves -- when it does decide to behave -- too good to chuck it to the dumpster. But the fan howl sounds too scary to continue using the beast. That's my dilemma...

Thanks for the kind words. Sadly, intermittent issues like this are often too difficult to pinpoint as far as the problem goes. In your case, I'd get it to boot proper, and then put it into sleep mode when not in use so that when needed, you can simply wake the PC without going into that howling PSU scariness. 1. Unplug power chord from PSU. Jump CMOS terminals (closed) this clears the CMOS. Next boot you will enter the BIOS setup program.. chose Optimal Defaults. Exit. 2. Still no boot, again unplug power chord from PUS, remove all memory modules except one single module, should boot to BIOS setup, chose Optimal Defaults save reboot. Before re-installing memory modules first make a successful boot into the operating system. ALWAYS UNPLUG POWER CHORD when ever removing or adding any hardware.

Thank you for the video. My computer would not beep, it was a gradual problem. At first I could just unplug and discharge the power. Later I had to unplug all usb devices, then finally none of that worked. I watched your video....cleared cmos, no help. Then I removed the battery for about 3 hours. At first it would not come on at all, unplugged and plugged back in and viola it is on and working! Hopefully it will start again tomorrow after turning it off. Thanks again!!

Thanks to Rodney for this diagnosis vid. As a veteran PC tinkerer, I was surprised to see you plugging in what appears to be a live mains supply back into the PSU. I wouldnt advise anyone to do that, as 240V (or similiar) is suddenly surging back into the PSU. That can cause a nasty short. I would always switch off mains, insert plug into PSU then switch on mains at the wall socket. Your steps to hunt down the faulty component look right to me, although in my case, my intel MSI motherboard suddenly POSTs, then dies as the OS tries to load. Generally, intel chipset m/bs seem to be better than AMD chipset m/bs fitted with sluggish AWARD bios chips.

You're absolutely right. Truth be told, this was pure lazyness on my part (I didn't have a power bar set up to shut off the power feed, so I defaulted to just unplugging/replugging the lead). I've reverted to using an on/off switch on a power bar in the follow-up video to this one. I myself was generally impressed with the performances of true Intel chipset boards versus third party manufacturers as well, however, now that I build and use primarily AMD setups, this no longer applies : \

RodneyDickson OK Rodney, thanks for quick reply. I know the Intel AMD debate is endless among enthusiasts. I'm not sure how one identifies a "true" Intel chipset, I guess I can research that. I'd be interested to know which AMD setup you prefer out of technical interest. Modern BIOS chips appear to be far more stable than the old Award BIOS. The question self builders need to ask is probably which BIOS is going to cause them the least problems, while providing the best features.

writerNB Heh, when I was referring to a true Intel chipset, I was referring to an Intel northbridge and Intel southbridge motherboard. If you wanna go further, you can even opt for these components on an Intel manufactured board. From experience, these were well-calibrated, reliable boards. As to which chipsets work best with AMD, I couldn't tell you. Right now I'm using an Asus board with an AMD chipset to support my AMD CPU. Asus has given me mixed results over the years, and I generally opt for it not by choice but rather by availability.

If the power supply has a switch on it, you can flip that off instead of unplugging the power cord, plus most modern motherboards have a green "standby" LED to let you know if they're getting any power, once this goes out, you know the board is getting no power and is safe to work on. PS, as far as discharging static from your body, you can touch any part of the metal case, it doesn't have to be the power supply itself; bear in mind that the power supply is bolted to the metal case, so it's all connected as far as any type of electricity is concerned

+Rangerman9404 Your discharge tip is correct, as is the I/O switch tip for the PSU. I only suggest pulling the plug for 2 main reasons: 1) This avoids ANY chance that current still enters the PC (switches can become defective or can get knocked back into the ON position) and 2) Using the I/O switch can burn out a PSU that is in less than optimal shape (after I burnt out my second PSU using this switch, I vowed never to use one regularly again).

Great advice, one thing I have discovered which is strange is that a computer did not power up or POST beep when there was a dead CMOS battery. The way I discovered that was by removing the CMOS battery, try booting up and it works. Replaced the same battery and no boot or POST beep. I rectified the problem by replacing the CMOS battery with a new one and PC worked fine with no problems.

Just had a simillar problem, where my PC wouldn't beep at me after a power outage. It started beeping at me after resteting CMOS memory, and removing the components I found out that 2 of my RAMS died... Atleast the motherboard is fine. Thanks for the Video it really helped me out today!

Old main boards fail due to capacitor failure, Modern high end boards will virtually never go bad due to them using new solid cap technology. In today's time if your boards have regular can caps and they fail it is best to replace the board with something more modern that is not affected by the "great capacitor plague" of the early century.. I used to spend hours troubleshooting and replacing caps on boards and wasting loads of time, now it is easier to just upgrade the whole thing with a new board and CPU. Same for RAM if its failing or causing a BSOD then your better off replacing ALL of the sticks at once because one bad stick could have damaged or over strained the others in the chain.
