This just helped me fix my issue. After a small drop, ZenFone 10 wouldn't recognise the Sim card. When I opened the phone, the ribbon cable from the KB board to the motherboard was completely loose. Re-seated it, and bam. Working fine. Was able to reuse most of the adhesive too. Cheers.

First of all, great disassembly, you help a lot, I always look into your channel when I'm interested in a phone I may like for the future Now about the device itselft, I like the thing about the speaker being independent from everything else and the flex cable directly to usb-c for me is more convenient than having a module to change, first time I see something like that in a phone, and the cables so easy to take off, and the refrigeration system seems to be well thought, but the chasis itself seems to be pretty expensive, there are a lot of components inherently attached to it, and, for unexperienced people (like me) it can rise the price if you get frame+screen together, also, I don't have a problem to use the heat sometimes, but it seems to be that I would need it more than usual in this case, something that for me I would thing about when I'm buying a phone, I like ASUS zenfone though, they have evolved a lot, in the past I would never have though about buying one and now it's one of my favorites

Thanks! Yeah, in general it's always best to replace a frame and screen combo which comes pre attached since it makes the job easier compared to having to apply new adhesive yourself which isn't always easy and if not done correctly can come off etc, however yeah cost goes up that route. Also repair wise it isn't the most repair friendly since you need to take apart a lot of stuff to get to the screen, but it is a solid frame and device, and feels very premium in hand. It also functions very smooth so I believe it has more upside than down and well worth the buy. :)

Hey so my zenfone 8 battery degraded a substantial amount now. Do you think it's theoretically possible to replace the stock 4000mah battery with the zenfone 9/10 4300mah battery? As a nice little extra charge i guess. Or stick to stock battery replacements?
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews Ай бұрын
most likely not, because the battery compartment would probably not fit the slightly larger battery, as well as the fact the connector location or connector type might be different.

Hi! I managed to get my sim card and tray stuck in the phone (my sim reader wasn't working, so I placed a piece of paper in the tray under the card to try to restore contact on a forum's advice- it didn't work, and must have displaced the card enough that it is getting stuck while trying to remove it). I opened the phone up this morning to see if I could push it out internally, but the sub-board would not budge with the sim tray in place. I looked up your video thinking I might've been missing something, but the board just won't move while the tray is in place, and I can't get the tray out. Do you have any advice on getting the tray out? If you need any more details, I can let you know. I would greatly appreciate any advice!
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 4 ай бұрын
yeah it might be touch considering the sim reader is facing the frame and you can't really have much access to it unless you remove the sub board. You can try lifting the sub board from the back at the same time you are trying to insert a sim ejector tool in the sim ejector hole to see if you can make it budge and eventually be able to left the sub board out of its place and wiggle it out while the sim tray stays in the frame etc. Worst case you would need to get a replacement sub board and sim tray and just brake off the sub board or sim tray when removing.
@JPower172
@JPower172 4 ай бұрын
@@PBKreviews thank you! I managed to get it out with a bit of finagling- the tray did move a bit. The card was getting stuck at the edge of the case, not actually in the board. I was able to get a knife between the board and the edge of the case to push down on the SIM card and that let me remove it fully. Now that I got it out and can at least use my old phone for now, I'd like to ask a follow-up question. Do you know where I could find a new sub-board and/or sim reader? I searched eBay and Amazon and could only find postings for a Zenfone V. Or alternately, any ways of possibly repairing the one I have? I really appreciate your help. Your video was great and I know you don't have to take the time to respond to all these comments, so thank you!!

To replace the screen on the Zenfone 10, you do not need to remove the main motherboard or the lower speaker assembly, or either of the cameras. However, you do need to remove the battery and the ribbon cables that cross it in order to remove the ribbon cable for the screen, which passes underneath the battery. (This is a poor design; if they had simply made the ribbon cable double-ended, it could be disconnected from the screen without removing the back panel at all.) I did not use heat to remove the screen or back plate. For the screen, a scraper razor blade was useful to get it started at one corner, then I slid a finger nail all the way around, and it required quite a bit of force. For the back plate, I used a blue plastic iFixit spudger. Don't lose the earpiece speaker grille when you remove the screen. It's held in with a tiny bit of adhesive and will probably get pulled out with the screen, and the new screen won't come with a new one. Once you get the back case and the screen off, the hardest part is removing the battery. I have read that you can use isopropyl alcohol to dissolve the adhesive, but I was able to carefully pry it out with a small curved metal spudger/spatula I bought from Princess Auto for a few bucks. The battery adhesive will stay attached to the mid-frame and you should be able to re-use it. I honestly don't understand how the videomaker was able to peel out the battery so easily by grabbing the clear sticker; that approach did not work for me and I would suggest leaving the clear sticker in place and removing it by prying from one side (prying will slightly dent the plastic side frame, but if you're careful it should be OK). To re-attach the screen and the back plate, you will need new adhesive tape. You will not be able to re-use the old adhesive, and nothing else holds the screen and back plate in place. You will also need two sizes of tape: 2mm wide for the back plate, and 1mm wide for the screen. I ordered the "Tesa 61395" tape from iFixit. Unless you did an exceptionally good job of applying the tape, I would not count on full water resistance once it's put back together. I ordered a screen from Amazon, but all the sellers (on eBay too) seemed to be selling the same screen from a single manufacturer. The text and images all seemed to be the same, anyway. Once I get my screen installed I'll update with how well it went.
@Jake_James
@Jake_James 26 күн бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to post this! Especially regarding the adhesive tape sizes and battery removal tips. Not much info online about working on these phones. How did you go? Is the quality of your replacement screen okay?
@cmmartti
@cmmartti 26 күн бұрын
@@Jake_James I got my replacement screen and I tested it. It appears to be an OEM part, and it looked exactly identical to the original screen. The seller I ordered it from on Amazon Canada was called "JiJiang Ni for ASUS Accessories", but this particular listing is no longer available. When I ordered mine there were several other sellers on Amazon and eBay that seemed to be selling identical parts, and I picked one at random. One correction to my original comment: you do need to remove the lower speaker assembly, in order to disconnect the other side of the ribbon cables. But this is an easy step, and removing the ribbon cables fully makes it easier to get the battery out. There was a shipping snafu with the tape from iFixit and I had to order it again, and I'm still waiting on it, so my phone is still disassembled in a drawer.
@cmmartti
@cmmartti 23 күн бұрын
@@Jake_James (It looks my original reply didn't go through so I'll try again.) I got my screen and it appears to be an OEM part. It is exactly identical to the original screen in just about every way, including picture quality. I would assume that all the sellers with the same images and details are getting theirs from the same source. I have one correction for my original post: you do need to remove the lower speaker assembly if you want to fully remove the ribbon cables that cross the battery, which is a good idea because removing the battery takes quite a bit of force. As far as the adhesive tape goes, there was a shipping issue and I only got it today. Applying the tape is a tricky operation because it doesn't stretch or bend at all, which means you need to fill in the corners with little cut-out pieces and try to line up the joints tightly to form a watertight seal. The most difficult part is around the proximity and light sensors, which I somehow managed to damage and they no longer work. Take it from me: don't put a piece of 2mm tape right across the sensors and try to go back and cut it out later; rather, use a bunch of pieces of 1mm tape and work your way around it. Applying the tape to the back is much easier because there's so much more room to work, but the same problem with the corners applies. I actually ordered some 8mm tape at the same time for other uses, and I was able to cut some corners out of that, using a handheld hole puncher to cut the round inside corner, applying it, and then cutting the outside with a knife. For both sides, apply the tape to the frame, not to the screen or backplate. A pair of small thread scissors or flush-cutters is crucial, as well as an X-acto knife with a fresh blade and some small flathead screwdrivers or spudgers to press the tape down before lifting off the backing. I already had the phone disassembled from before, and it took me 2-3 hours to apply the tape and get everything back together. Like I said, it's a tedious operation and I wish someone sold the pre-cut adhesive like you can get for more popular devices like iPhones.
@cmmartti
@cmmartti 23 күн бұрын
@@Jake_James Wait, after a reboot my proximity and light sensors do work! So now everything is back to full operation. Except maybe the waterproofing, which I will not test because I am not at all sure I did a good enough job with the adhesive tape. I'm sure it's good enough for some splash resistance, and that's all that really matters for me.
@Jake_James
@Jake_James 23 күн бұрын
@@cmmartti you're a legend bro! 🙏🫡 Thank you so much for sharing all this advice. The tape sounds annoying but definitely manageable and hopefully some of your tips help with the process. I have this question because I have the 9 and thought about upgrading to the 10, but when I am right it looks more a downgrade for the front and ultra wide cam.

Internally it looks really well engineered with a lot of attention to detail. They crammed everything in a very small volume and made it almost airtight in regards of seals, i see they even managed to (finally) get a NFC antenna+Charging coil inside. Repairability score seems fair. It ain't the worst, it ain't the best. Replacing small bits and the battery seem pretty doable, though that screen looks like a nightmare.

4.5 out of 10 scores, I am kind of disagree, this is very classic 3 section design for repair. (of course I am talking about for repairmen) not general users. but compare to ROG phones, iPhone 12, 13, 14 etc., this model is relatively alot easier than the mentioned phones. Just a comment only, no offend, I have been watching your vidoes, Thanks for all the videos, keep it up, Cheers!

Hi, thanks for your support. Yeah it definitely is easier than iphones to repair, but in the score other factors contribute to it like how available parts are to actually do repairs on it etc. iPhones and other phones parts are more easily available compared to Asus phone parts. Also the design requires to take many things apart to get to replacing the screen where other phones might be easier for screen replacements and it hurts the score a bit there as well. Regardless of the score, if parts are available, I would still take this phone to repair over iphones. 😃

Keep in mind that just because the ram is ontop of the processor, does not necessarily mean its prone to fail. As long as the phone has sufficient cooling, it should be perfectly fine. The ones that do cause problems are with bad cooling or bad/cheap components being used.

@PBKreviews thank you for your enlightenment, I have seen in several KZbin videos about ram processor got loosen and to caused bootloop, mostly Poco X3 devices were affected. That's why I came to my assumption

When I see this junk I praise myself for having purchased a Fairphone.. Even replacing the battery looks like a headache.

trashy interior design. If this things ever breaks, throw it out. Easier to save up money for a new one than repairing it

@@PBKreviews asus is disappointing with its interior designs. Difficulty to repair is an apple thing, asus sells to gamers, and gamers want modularity. The one thing that should be the most easy to replace is the battery, since its the first one to fail. If you can replace the battery a phone like this with such specs will still be usable until 2028. I have an asus zenfone 4 from 2017 and I use it to this day and its still very good, the hardware is still up to date for most applications and games. Of course, I wont upgrade to a zenfone 10. my next will be a rogphone
