What a lot of people focus on is boot up speed, and snappy opening of programs, but its also important to consider such things as processing large video files, or moving large files across hard drives, etc. Most of the lower priced SSDs have very poor performance when copying large amounts of data after the cache is full. In other words, its designed for less than 9 second transfers, and if you go above that, the SSD moves at a snails pace, and is actually slower than a fast HDD. Nobody mentions this, because of marketing reasons.

I don't think people get it the difference between the two. SSD are way faster in transfer rate and acces time, consume less power and is shock resistant. It's all electronics. A good desktop HDD have 150 MB/sec transfer rate (a lot less for laptop hdd) while a good SSD can saturate a modern sata 3 interface, about 550MB/sec read/write. Acess time for an HDD is about 12 msec in very best circonstance while SSD have typical .1 msec. Don't forget that HDD get fragmented all over the disk easily which prolongue horribly the acces time into seconds while there is files fragmentation on an ssd, it make no difference in access time. All memory cells have the same figure. There is no comparaison, SDD are better then HDD in every way. The only hold up now is the cost of an SSD memory cell (nand) which is higher but has been fallen dramatically from the last years. So in 2 years the HDD is a dead horse for most computer except data center. The best scenario for now is having an ssd for windows and applications with a regular hdd for data storage. However this is out of question for a laptop.

This video should of made it clear that they are comparing the SSD with a 5400rpm HDD which is super slow lets be honest. I upgraded to a 7200rpm drive recently and my laptop is now plenty fast enough for loading everything and very respectable boot times. So the price/speed trade off between an SSD and a 7200rpm HDD is one worth taking into account because for the price of a 120GB SSD you can get a 750GB (or more) 7200rpm HDD which is only a little slower. My advice... wait for the SSD prices to tumble in 2014. By 2015 the prices will be perfect. But if you can't wait then 7200rpm HDD's are in the sweet spot right now.

Every ssd is different, motherboard/ports also play a role. From the moment I hit the power button, windows loads up in less than 10 seconds, it's blazing fkn fast. Needless to say, games load fast as hell. It's kind of pointless to get it if you play a load-once type of game like cs go or something but it's extremely good for games that require long loads or constant loading like total war series. Waiting 2 goddamn minutes for a total war load was lame, now it takes less than 15 secs.

On HDD even if you see the desktop it is quite a while before you actually start working. Try opening Word or a Browser and see how long it takes it to actually function normally. Its gonna be infuriatingly long. On SSD basically as soon as you can see the desktop you can start working. Open you Browser and it will start up and be operational in 1-2 seconds.

20 sec VS 40 sec. Not only you reach the desktop faster, but when you get there the computer is responsive as opposed to a HDD which needs even more time loading services and processes.

How much does the number of processor cores play into response time? Since the i5 is about $100 more than an i3, I think I might buy an i3 for a new build and use the money I'm saving to buy a SSD. I don't plan on doing any gaming or real processor-heavy tasks. Any thoughts?

Actually it can also help with things like moving big files (like 4-7GB or bigger) and also in big games that have many things to load. But anyway an HDD can get the job done well anyway.

256GB is enough for 5 large data sized games ( 20gb per ) leaving the rest (156GB ) for other uses or for even more games upon you. 500GB is also considered enough on a desktop, but again it depends on what kinds of games you're planning to play. All games have their specifications listed on their websites.

I had a 500gb hybrid and ended up buying an ssd and sticking the hybrid in a case and using external. The hybrid wasnt bad or anything I just used a mates ssd and decided the speed was worth the space sacrifice. Its as you would expect really, the hybrid is noticeably faster than the hdd but the ssd is noticeably faster than the hybrid. As you know the sacrifice is space. Ive got a 256ssd in my machine and a 500gb hybrid external and i'm extrememly happy.

The real power of SSD is handling large number of IO requests per second (IOPS). This means if you need open a file, load some drivers, read a file somewhere else, seek deeper into a file etc. then the SSDs handle more of them compared to HDDs which need to physically move the read/write heads. On SSDs it is just electronic reads off chips. SSDs handle approx 6000 IOPS whereas the best HDDs can only do 200 tops (those are the enterprise class 15K rpm Fiber Channel drives. The regular SATA drives at home do only about 80-100 tops) SSDs really shine for random io because the mechanical movements of HDDs really cause more latency as time spent seeking can be too much of an overhead. However, for pure single sequential IO, HDDs won't be that far behind as the platters rotate quite fast. But if you want to do like 200 simultaneous sequential reads then the SSDs again outshine the HDDs. Basically, tl;dr - Buy SSDs and put all your random type of ops there - boot windows from there. For others like video games, pics, movies etc. which are large and usually sequentially read, HDDs are fine.

The Benefits Of Using SSD: 1. Boot Up (Faster) 2. Open Apps (Faster) 3. Transfer Data (Faster) 4. Apps Installations (Faster) I prefer to upgrade my RAM first rather than adding SSD NVME M2. cause i spend a lot of times inside the apps (Corel, Ai, Ps, Au, Pr, Browser, VLC, docs).

Hey guys my tip for you: Get an SSD!! It is so much faster than the HDD, and acuttally the prices for a 500GB SSD (Samsung or SanDisk) on Amazon are under 80€!
@monsterous28911 жыл бұрын
You need to disable parts on the motherboard that you aren't using. This will drastically speed up the BIOS boot up time.
@bigsky197011 жыл бұрын
It'll be worth it when the price comes down and the storage space is much larger. I got a 160GB external drive that's about 10 years old and still works.
@naveenc127411 жыл бұрын
Most people don't install more than 100 GB of files onto the SSD. Usually only the OS and large programs/games are loaded... with smaller files like documents there's not really a performance increase, so extra space isn't needed for that.
