Thanks for the video review. How noisy is it ? I plan to place a NAS in a linen cupborad which is next to a bedroom.

Would you recommend Asustor Driverstor 2 over something similar from Synology? Would love to hear the difference between hardware and software.
@UMORIEGA Жыл бұрын
I would certainly not. All these entry level NAS devices from Synology or Asustor is expensive children toys. Just recently got myself AS1102T and it's pure crap. Cannot handle 5000 photos and videos. When open the directory, it always maxes out CPU to 99% and takes forever to even load the thumbnails. And I use Crucial MX500 SSD's in it. Still slow AF.

@@UMORIEGA, crucial sucks. It could be the SSD. Kingston is a better brand overall.

I have this same AS1102T I have inserted 2x exos 10tb 3.5 hdd. After setup, the system is auto configured to single drive. The other drive is inactive. And there is no way I could config raid1 or JBOD on it. Can u suggest a way Pl.
@UMORIEGA Жыл бұрын
When I started mine, it configured RAID1 automatically. I think it's by default RAID1.

I am planning on connecting external 4TB HDD via USB. It is powered via electricity. What speed do you think I could get if I want to access the data from outside the network?
@MakeUseOf2 жыл бұрын
The bottleneck would be your internet speeds on both ends (at home, as well as wherever you are).

Can I use common HDDs, not NAS ?
@MakeUseOf2 жыл бұрын
You can, but they're more likely to fail, so be sure to set up a RAID1 and keep a spare on hand. It's just a bit riskier, is all.

@@MakeUseOf I generally only use my NAS to do monthly backups and I have had good luck with normal HDDs. I'm using an old DLink DNS-321 that I've had for over 10 and have only ever had to replace one drive. Unfortunately my NAS is dying and I need a replacement. Thanks for the thorough review!

I know if anyone is recommending plex they have no idea what they are talking about...
@MakeUseOf Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you're having a go at Plex or the Drivestor here. What's wrong with Plex? My Plex install has been solid for about a decade through various versions and hardware upgrades, with an enormous library.
@dojandooo3578 Жыл бұрын
@@MakeUseOf I am glad that Plex works great for you. But once I had so many problems with plex. And that in itself would not be THAT bad since a few of those problems were User errors or me not knowing how to properly set it up. But There is absolutely NO support for plex whatsoever. Not even when you pay for it. So once you DO get problems, and I had software related problems as well, then you are on your own. The only thing plex offers you is a forum where other people might help you ... which they dont because its dead and nobody bothers helping. So all plex does in the end is take your money and when you have a problem they just put a middle finger in your face and say "I already have your money, not my problem" ... If they charge for a product I expect at least some kind of support for it. And people who defend plex have just no clue about the business' they advertise and therefore I can not trust them because I can not trust plex anymore.
