That's awesome thanks. I've been turning some dip pens which are partly 3 sided (using 3 colours of wood) and other dip pens which are round with an inside out section. The three sided inside out idea occured to me, which led me here. The flame looks amazing, so today I'll be attempting a pen with a flame in the grip (bulge in the dip pen). 16mm is the maximum diameter, so got the dread feeling already. It's amazing when I get a crazy idea how often I end up here. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Very nice process for a 3 sided Io turning. I use 3 hex shaped pieces but I'll be trying this method...less wood! Thanks, Jim Jakosh

I had not thought of hex. but yes that is probably more wood. Alan

Nice piece! I think I'll try to make one of these. Save your fingers! Use a dry sponge between your hand and the sandpaper. Should the paper slip or grab there's a layer of protection for your fingers. The sponge is stiff and gives the same support to the sandpaper as your fingers while protecting your hand. Hope this helps.

Hi Alan. At the first glue up, did you ONLY use the tape around the bundle and CA glue on each end? The reason for the question is I have seen others use paper between the staves so it would release easy after first cutting.
@AsWoodTurns5 жыл бұрын
On previous inside out projects I have used paper joints. I've also used band clamps around the bundle. In Dale's demo, he used this process and I decided to try it and see if it would work for me. It did. I think paper joints are more secure but this was adequate. Thank you Ed Alan

I have done several 4 stave inside out turnings but never thought about 3 stave. Yours is great. Love the flame inside. great color work It looks realistic. Now that you have done a 3 stave, what about two? Thanks for sharing.

Two staves seem pretty chunky - I'd have to work on that to get them to look good. But, very possible. Alan
