Quincy Delight Jones Jr. was born on March 14, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up in a racially segregated America, Jones faced significant challenges from a young age. His mother, Sarah Frances, was a bank officer and apartment complex manager, and his father, Quincy Delight Jones Sr., was a semi-professional baseball player and carpenter.
Jones found solace in music early on, learning to play the trumpet and piano. By his teens, he had developed a passion for jazz, and while attending Seattle's Garfield High School, he met Ray Charles, who would become a lifelong friend and collaborator. This formative period was crucial in shaping Jones's musical ambitions and honing his talents.
