I think you give the Pirates a bit too much credit. Nothing turns brutal faster than an undervalued people who succeed in getting what they want through violence. Those Pirates would probably want to keep things protected at first, but their own greed, mistrust and unfamiliarity with actual governance of a mass population will start to turn them into a terrible option.

I agree. If you've never been a storekeeper or a farmer or a teacher in your entire life, you're not going to become a shopkeeper or a farmer or a teacher after you've succeeded as a gangster. Your children, maybe. But more likely even for them, "Just as I thought I was out, you pulled me back in."

Yeah, the Supervisor might have maintained a surveillance state, but at least the society was peaceful and stable. Under pirates, the At Attin people would basically be slaves. And I don't see pirates suddenly settling down and treating the people with respect -- slaves tend to be treated like slaves. More likely there would be raping and pillaging -- if not up front, then eventually when the joy of endless credits runs out. Jod might have some morals left, but we've seen how tenuous his hold over the pirates can be. Eventually it would likely end up like At Achen: a broken, looted place.

For the record I can see the flaws in all 3 options the people of At Attin had. Just like in real life there is no perfect solution to any government. I just thought he was being a little too dismissive of the downsides of Rule by Pirates over the other options.

They are demilitarizing and don’t have the industrial output or currency to do so. They basically scrapped everything and told everyone to fend for themselves like before the clone wars, so rich places get lots of security and poor worlds get nothing but maybe some blasters from traveling merchants that feel pitiful or generous. That’s why when later on when the you zon vong came through half dead and low on resources they still managed to kill trillions in republic territory.

Allen has exited his “Allegiance to the Republic, to Democracy” phase and entered his “Slavery to a despot is better than the chaos of freedom” phase… Let’s be honest here, try as he might, there is no way that Jod would be able to maintain control over the entire planet, much less his crew, without violence. Add to that the fact that the pirates would certainly leave the barrier and start spreading around the news of At Attin’s discovery, and malicious actors would flock to the planet anyway. Eventually they would find a way around the barrier, and then At Attin would be extra vulnerable, but without the protection of the Republic. The New Republic had its issues to be sure, but Republic rule is a much better alternative to pirate rule.

Agreed that the New Republic's probably the best possible 'we found it first' deterrent in this period of time. Jod's gang would have had to form a cartel or pirate syndicate of some kind and tried to keep everything under wraps; but under pirate control it's not an 'if' or even a 'when' it gets attacked and handed over to the next guys, it's a how many times does it happen until the NR finally shows up and at that point is the planet intact enough to care about?

With how little viewership the show got, unfortunately it's unlikely we'll see a direct season 2. That being said, Jod and a few other characters could appear in other shows. This era of Star Wars tv likes to have characters cameo in their sibling shows. We of course saw this with Book of Boba Fett, we saw Morgan Elsbeth hop over from Mandalorian to Ahsoka, and even one of the pirates in this show was brought over from Mandalorian season 3. So we may have seen the last of Skeleton Crew, but probably not the last of Jod.

Counterpoint: Jod would become a paranoid wreck, constantly on guard for mutiny. Assuming he isn't shot in his sleep, he would have to become the very tyrant he doesn't want to be in order to keep his crew in line. Meanwhile the people of At Attin would be vulnerable to any of the less moral pirates. Ultimately, the treasure of At Attin would turn pirate against pirate, and it would look like At Achrin. Compared to this, the benign neglect of the New Republic is definitely preferable.

Kudos to Jude Law because the face Jod made when he saw the vault full of credits at At Attin would have put Gollum to shame. I think there’s a bit of romantism about pirates in this vid. Greed is insatiable and why settle for one small kelp farm, when unlimited credits can get you a kelp farm empire? No number of credits was going to satisfy these pirates. And, perhaps we’re ignoring why all the citizens of At Attin were somehow in these highly skilled analytical roles? It seems like cubicle hell, but maybe there’s something more complicated about this mint then just making more credits. I don’t believe the pirates would understand or even care about the nuances of this process. They would have a pillaged this planet, trashed everything and left nothing but misery. Jod may be trying to be a good person, but as a pirate leader, every attempt he’d try to make things better (or at least less bad) will compromise his ability to remain a leader. He knows this. Jod Na Nawood is no Greef Karga. The situation is not the same. That said, I have zero faith At Attin will survive the New Republic stewardship and remaining in a bubble is just not an answer (or an option anymore). No matter how we see it, this poor planet is screwed. That said, I really liked Skeleton Crew. Thank you Alan and your crew for the introspectives throughout this and other shows.

I'm sure if At Attin was really concerned about security and couldn't restore their barrier. They could always use some of those newly minted credits and buy a fleet. they would not understand the process, right, but they would absolutely not replace local managers. They want unlimited credits? Planet's gonna keep farming, they just need to come take what they need twice a year. And what's already in store would be plenty enough for a life of luxuries anywhere for all of them. Of course knowledge about the planet would easily spread within a generation or two, but that would be enough time to keep it safe from another galaxy-wide conflict: New Republic vs First Order.

Jod is an actor. Both his words and body language are contrived for his audience and cannot be trusted. He failed to tell his ship full of pirates to not pirate. They came down and did what they do, and he could have prevented that, just as he chose the tactics that his pirate ship used at the beginning of the series. Pirates don’t balance the needs of the individual against those of the group or society, and Jod doesn’t either. Any working together that they do is an extremely fragile peace with distrust on all sides. Staying hidden probably would be best for At-Atin, the adults all knew what the planet was about. I trust the motivations of the former rebels more than those of the pirates. Jod could have chosen to stay on At-Atin and retire in comfort. He could have loaded up his one ship with credits and continued coming back in the role of emissary for the rest of his life, sharing generously with his crew. But no humble option like that was enough for him. He had to set himself up as planetary crime boss/warlord and try to enslave the people as well as taking all their wealth. Yes, their future is very uncertain now, but Jod is ultimately, as shown by his entire pattern of decision-making, a bad guy.

yeah i do feel like the biggest flaw in how it ended was that with the droids in charge it seems like jod very easily could have had the droids load his ship with credits, fly out and transfer the load to the pirates, and then fly back in and do it all over again as many times as he wanted. also i don't see why they made him the apprentice of a jedi survivor instead of a surviving padawan. just felt like an unnecessary separation, like if they were gonna make him not a jedi they should have given him a telekinesis device and made him a full on charlatan.

I just don't see things going well under the pirates. The fact they started shooting randomly and rounding up the citizens like slavers had me worried as to their fate. I mean yeah, he needs them to work the mint, but how quick before they start seeing some of those people as trade goods if they don't work directly for the mint. It becomes run amuck capitalism where unless you produce, you are feed. I mean if they had just brought the ship in, claiming it was a Republic freighter to move more credits, I would have been more at ease. His best move would have been to keep the citizens of At Attin ignorant that anything had changed. The planet had putted along just fine for decades or more, you don't fix a well-oiled machine by taking a bat to it.

Here’s a theory: Jod gets incarcerated and becomes a political prisoner. Wym visits him frequently and learns about the force during the visitations so much so that he himself unlocks his force sensitivity. At attin becomes reintroduced to the Republic in the form of the New Republic. Territory is established politicians and bureaucrats plot on what to do with the new found territory and the citizens grow weary of the extended presence. Some of the politicians of the New Republic are integrated into the society of at attin and eventually the citizens themselves devise a plan long with new Republic allies to take back control over their peaceful planet to build a new foundational galactic position for themselves with all the mint they have in their possession. Trade routes, banking etc, I can see them becoming a planet that mirrors two of our countries we have on earth. One being Switzerland and the other the fictional wakanda from the marvel universe as they reactivate the barrier to ward off unwanted entities from entering the planet. I can see the the parents of the skeleton crew being government officials on their planet and I can also see them enlisting the consultation of jod himself. They could release Jod and make him an ambassador to go seek other planetary systems as allies for exchange for business ie trade routes banking services and technology etc. At attin like Africa will become a target for other planetary systems to exploit and usurp the riches in the planet and the people residing there will get caught up in an age old tale of having to retake their home and manage it themselves for it to benefit themselves. At attin could be a pocket of the universe with its own set of stars wars adventures. The skeleton crew could be at the center of many of these stories. I would’ve mind if we didn’t have a season 2 until the kids have grown to older teenage to adult age in this timeline. Maybe this is how the first order we’re able to afford star killer base and all the rest of their massive post imperial fleet. They may have seized at attin.

We saw how quick Navaro went to hell in the Madalorian when Pirates took over. Once the word got out (and it would because pirates aren't great secret keepers what with people tattooing maps on their backs and stuff) every other pirate group, the imperial remnant, AND the New Repub would be lobbing lasers across their sky. The point of the whole show was they couldn't hide forever. At some point they needed to join the galaxy again, better to do it where they can actually discuss it without guns pointed at them, and who knows they could become a huge banking world which would technically make them even more worth protecting.

This poses a bigger question of what timeline exactly does this fit into within the SW universe, and how are the economic effects of that many credits being suddenly made available going to be reflected into the rest of canon? Are they taken and used to fund the first order? (it might explain their sudden rise and the starkiller base funding). Are they used by the new republic and to what end? This is waaaay bigger than Aldhani and that was a big deal to the emperor. Will they be taken by the new republic and just put in a new safe place (a galactic fort knox somewhere on Coruscant)?

There's also a Bad Batch episode that showed cities under the newly minted (pun not intended) Empire had to exchange Republic credits for Imperial credits. It's unknown if the New Republic went back to using Old Republic credits, or if they once more reinvented the currency exchange rate possibly making Old Republic credits useless once again without a proper means of exchange outside of black market/underground value amongst pirates, crime syndicates, and other such dealers.

I think what happens really has to do with the big unanswered question: What is the Great Work? Was it just printing a pile of money? That seems simplistic and somewhat "ungreat". Was the training of all the analysts a key part of the work? Are they supposed to manage how the money is spent? If the people of At Attin actually understand what The Great Work is, they will most likely try to follow though with that.

I'd say pirates could be better, specifically Jod might work well, but his "enforcers" are pretty bloodthirsty and won't just take it easy on the populace. They'd want palaces and everything. Since it's a "safe" world they'd use it as a base, build up fortresses, the secret would get out eventually, they aren't all unified people, they'll argue over stuff and fight each other. Jod kept thinking he was in control, but kept failing in that regard. He wasn't the right type of pirate for the group he was with. I don't think Jod could manage the world assuming the pirates work. He has a few ideals, but is flawed, winging things as he's going, and doing it decently well. But he makes mistakes, he's greedy, he wants money for money's sake rather than wanting money for what it can give him. He might learn over time, but he might have the populace build him a palace and a horde, could turn into a mini palpatine. If the barrier were intact, they could have operated for the new republic like they did for the old republic, without the barrier, it's going to be more complicated. It's at least likely to be well protected as long as they mint money. The droid brain was fine, the adults knew about it. Presumably they have a degree of control, might even have a possibilityof voting it out. The republic, or those who set it up, were probably not corrupt when it was established.

Honestly I think it came down to choosing either living as slaves or losing some safety. I seriously doubt that the pirates were interested in fostering any sort of trust with the population. They clearly wanted to farm as many credits as they could for as long as they possibly could. Yes destroying the barrier was forever destroying their chance at complete safety but at that point it was already finished. There’s basically zero chance that the pirates would have been able to keep the secret of At Attin safe. Eventually more people would have found out and then there would basically have been a repeat of what happened to every other mint planet. At least now the people of At Attin can have some level of control and shaping over the fate of their planet. In my opinion even if it’s not ideal that’s still about a hundred times better then being brutally enslaved to ruthless pirates

We tend to give the canonical New Republic a lot of hate because it's not as badass as it was in Legends, still, it was a lot better than the governments that were formed after most revolutions. My limited study of history suggests that many revolutions don't really involve plans on what the new government would be like, often leading for revolutions replacing one tyrant for another tyrant. The French Revolution led to the Reign of Terror under the Jacobins and ended with a dictatorship under Napoleon. The Russian Revolution of the early 20th centuries replaced the Tsars with the Bolsheviks under Lenin and later Stalin. While these revolutions may have eventually improved things, for the people on the bottom, I would argue that Mon Mothma's new government was better at picking up the pieces after the Empire was defeated. The New Republic had its failings and blind spots but it was better than most revolutions on our world.

My guess is that the mint would have been kept in operation on At Attin, and all of the old republic credits would be taken to different banks throughout the New Republic and used as a reserve currency by pinning the New Republic credit to a fractional value of an old republic credit. This would make the New Republic credit increase in value and stave off future inflation and allow the new republic to make large purchases or leverage large loans off the value of the old republic credit. This would also let the New Republic use the old republic credits for large transfers of money. This way it would make the New Republic much less volitile and not increase inflation. As for what would happen to At Attin itself I imagine that they would rapidly develop being a source of immense wealth already. Each citizen of At Attin is highly educated and most have extensive managerial or technical experience and probably possess the wealth that they could do anything they want with a galaxy of new markets to absorb their money with minimal inflation. The New Republic would probably build a huge military base on the planet, if not invest in a planatary shield and all the employees of the mint could; start new businesses, build towns, invest in cities with their wealth on a planet that is mostly uninhibited other than the city around the minting facility. I can see At Attin becoming like Switzerland, Luxembourg, or Liechtenstein. A tiny planet with one the best GDP's per capita in the galaxy, where everyone is relatively wealthy based on the banking activities with droid automation removing any incentive for the existence of an underclass. I see it being much like the planet Plaizir-15 from the Mandalorian, but not nearly as dense or built up, and existing within the New Republic.

I doubt that releasing At Attin's vaults of credits to the New Republic would provide much help to the government at large. The main effect of releasing a supply of Old Republic credits on the galaxy would be reducing the value of old credits and probably iridium itself. It may provide some wealth to the people who get the hands on all of these ancient credits, but it would provide a lot of economic instability in the New Republic.

One fundamental mistake about At Atten mint. Unless the currency itself is made from some precious metal/substance with its own intrinsic value it is worthless. Currency's value is supported by the nation state is from. In this case the Old Republic no longer exists so its currency no longer has any value. For example, if you find a vault full of East German Deutch Marks they would not be worth the paper they are printed on. In order for this to work in the wider galaxy At Atten would need some sort of precious resource that the currency is made of or at least to base the currency on.
