Another "biopic" that I really love that shakes things up is the movie "Steve Jobs" with Michael Fassbender. Not to be confused with the horrible film "Jobs" with Ashton Kutcher.

I loved this movie. Certainly Dafoe's performance which seems spontaneous constantly. And the odea that he did not kill himself removes the obsession with tragedy that so many biopics have (Billie Holiday, Judy Garland..)

It's Van Gogh. Not Van Go.

I think I can appreciate the shear artistry and choices that went into this film, and I like your takes in this video, but I just have to say, I personally hated the cinematography. It just wasn't a movie I enjoyed watching at all. The only scene that really gripped me was when Gauguin told Van Gogh he was leaving. That's exactly what a panic attack feels like.

This is a great video, just watched it and wanted to look up to see if anyone has done a video essay. This was so well done, I've been working on a video essay for my channel and I know how hard it can be. A very professional video, great job!

Wow that’s very good man! You definitely should keep on the good work! I really believe you can gain a great following! At least you got me as your follower! And I’m from Russia so literally from the other part of the world Btw I would love to hear your thoughts about “biopic-musical” like Rocketman, Tick..Tick..BOOM and The Greatest Showman. No one talks about this iteration of biopic (or musical) genre and often confuse such films as Bohemian Rhapsody with musical (which is not a musical). So… yeah, would be really interesting if you maybe deconstructed the poetics of such films and their balance of being both musicals and real biographies.

I'm coming a bit late to the party, but this showed up in my suggestions, and I'm glad that it did. 'At Eternity's Gate' is one of my favorite films. It absolutely defies the bio-pic formula, and makes something different from the usual and expected. I loved the expressionistic look and feel of the film, and the cinematography serves it well. Willem Dafoe was amazing, and should have won the Oscar that year. Your review is well-done and insightful - thank you!
