I was homeless, sleeping on a bench in the middle of Prince Alfred park in 2020. Got hungry, absorbed and put into action what Jordan has been teaching. Now I work full-time part manager/house keeper of a hotel in a really nice part of Australia, earn good money and have roof over my head. I stay hungry as soon as I wake up and I stay motivated not to go back to that bench!

Another mindset for being on the dole that I've found useful although since I'm not paying rent it may be a bit unfair compared to others is that if I can successfully save up a decent amount while collecting such a small amount think about how good I'll be at saving money when I finally land a job and start getting a decent amount of money. Even if I wind up with a job that pays 50k a year(took that jab about the bachelor science a bit too personally lol) I reckon I'll be able to save up better than a lot of other people thanks to my experience on the jobseeker. I do certainly hope to give back not just by paying taxes throughout life but by hopefully providing a service in the field of science that makes the tax payer money invested in me worth it one day.

What is your degree? I have a bachelor of science and deep in 6 figs. I mean we have the same education but would you want 10k a month after tax? Hell if do a year or 2 bridging course.
@NoNo-kc8kf
@NoNo-kc8kf 2 жыл бұрын
@@Stanthemilkman I have an extended major in chemistry, the main reason I'm struggling I think is because I live in an area that doesn't have really any entry level stem jobs. My plan is to go back to Melbourne next year to do honours, I decided to spend this year back home with family so I could learn to drive and save a bit of money for next year. Job market does look fairly plentiful for chemists in Melbourne based on what I've seen on Seek so hopefully when I start searching for jobs in Melbourne it'll be easier. What's your major in science?
@Stanthemilkman
@Stanthemilkman 2 жыл бұрын
@@NoNo-kc8kf no, do chemical engineering. It has some much more utility. Honours is a waste of time and debt. All the straight chemistry people i know work in a lab most as lab techs. Boring af, pay not great. Once chemistry eng, you can apply for, metallurgist/process engineer position. More intresting, like i was running around the opf all day doing checks on why the thickener is not working. Data analysis, climbing ladders. Measuring mass flow of flocculant screw feeder with a bag and dtop watch it fun. Also lot more use cases out there for that qual. Then move where the work is ie WA, Queensland. WA No pokies, no tolls, no Liberal Government. You got nothing to lose do ya? But yeh get you licence. C PREFERable.
@Stanthemilkman
@Stanthemilkman 2 жыл бұрын
I did extractive metallurgy. But chem eng more broad. Don't do more straight chemistry, I can't stress that enough. As about bridging into chem eng.

@@Stanthemilkman Too late now lol if I wanted to do chemical engineering I'd have to do another 4 year degree haha :) from my experience doing research projects I've found that working within the research labs in the universities has been enjoyable and I think I'd like to go down a research path so my plan is to do honours and maybe go into a PhD if I meet the requirements. Honours is a definite for me because it'll be a great opportunity to gain skills and experience and I can only do it within 5 years of completing my degree so no way do I want to not do then regret doing later in life.

You know I've spent a good few years at rock bottom. I'm not proud that I'm on the job seeker payment. Which in its self I absolutely hate and I'm the type of person who would rather be able to work for my money. I've learnt something about myself even though I'm at rock bottom. I've learnt that no matter how many times I get knocked down . How many times I get knocked back for jobs or over looked. I spend a day going I'm done I'm over it I give up why bother when nobody will give me a chance to prove. I'm a good worker, I'll do anything extra asked of me. A day after I feel like that I go and say so what I didn't get it or my application isn't going any further. I still try and get myself to apply for more. That is a quality that actually surprises me. I live in Tamworth which its self isn't big but I've applied for jobs at Teys and Thomas Foods which are abattoirs in town they are supposedly crying out for more workers and yet. Completing the physical I didn't get Teys wasn't told why. Thomas foods I did their physical and got knocked back because I could stand with my back straight up against a wall behind me but yet everything else I passed on. Ok so yeah I couldn't work doing something's but I would be able to pack boxes or do labelling or putting caps on tbones. But because of one thing I don't even get the chance or the opportunity to show I can still do things but these companies are so called screaming for workers but are so unfairly picky that people don't even get a chance. Do employers and companies just not have a care to give people a go a trial instead of just going no sorry. I mean maybe if people did give people a try they may find that they are actually hard working and could possibly be some of the best employees that they have. I can honestly see why so many are unemployed and give up. I don't want to give up just wish that employers would give the chance to prove myself. So thank you Jordan this had some brilliant advice and guidance. I may have nothing to lose but I know all I have and what I can give

I wish I could claim welfare atm. Because I don't have a certificate of separation (in fact i don't think i have ever been given one unless I ask and my most recent employer is very difficult to get in touch with and that's before you take into account how dodgy they are [ not just saying that, they've not paid taxes in 5 years and have spent the majority of all the funding they have gotten from investors and the government maintaining a luxury lifestyle which they then claim as a company expense]) Also being imaginative as I am, i can always imagine a rock bottom below the rock bottom after all, we can drill through rock. Positivity is for smooth skins. Doesn't matter how positive and upbeat i am and think, it's not going to get me a job i am far more capable of doing then some 20 something who is nowhere near as good as me at it and will probably leave the company in 6 months to pursue a job that pays 5 cents more all because companies usually prefer beautifying their own office space over hiring someone who might be able to do a job without being too much of a hinderance. Technically I would be viewed more highly in society if I went out and committed a crime or two.

It's a lot of work to stay on Centrelink benefits. It's a borderline-lateral move, and potentially better, to just hustle and starve than jump through their hoops. It's a hard choice though. Starving and sleeping in your car fucking sucks.
