Dzintari is one of the central parts of the city of Jurmala, located near Riga. Dzintari has developed as an area of prestigious mansions for the wealthiest summer residents. After the Second World War, the construction of large sanatoriums and rest houses also began here.
There is a beautiful and very large beach. From the beginning of May to the end of September, the water is warm. Usually, from mid-June to mid-August there are a lot of people. Part of the beach is filled with tents and sunbeds.
Until 1922, Dzintari was called Edinburgh. This name was given in connection with the marriage of the daughter of the Russian Emperor Alexander II, Maria Alexandrovna, who regularly stayed on the Riga seaside, with the representative of the British royal house, the Duke of Edinburgh.
In 1922, the name Edinburgh was changed to Dzintari, which means amber in Latvian.
In the 1870s, when nearby Majori was rapidly developing as a place of trade and entertainment, Dzintari was formed as a residence of wealthy residents of Riga and visiting Russian aristocrats with luxurious buildings.
In 1897, a theater stage was built in Dzintari, where troupes and orchestras of a variety of theaters, not only from Riga but also from the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theater and the Warsaw Philharmonic, regularly performed.
The Edinburgh Concert Garden was more focused on dance music evenings, operettas, and variety shows. However, in 1910, its management hired a 70-piece orchestra from Berlin, and in 1911 created its own symphony orchestra.
In 1936, a new concert hall with 690 seats was built in Dzintari. In Soviet times, a summer concert hall with excellent acoustics for about 2,000 seats was added to it.
The open-air concert hall hosts jazz and classical music festivals, ballet festivals, comedy shows, among other things, the New Wave competition for young performers, and Summertime classical music festivals.
At the beginning of the revolution of 1905, after being released from custody, the Russian writer Maxim Gorky rested in the Kevich boarding house on Dzintaru Avenue, 39, and in 1914-1915 in the Maksimovich sanatorium on Dzintaru Avenue, 11, the Russian poet-symbolist Valery Bryusov was treated.
Before the war, during the First Republic of Latvia, Dzintari was part of the city of Riga as a Jurmala micro district. Since 1959, Dzintari has become part of the city of Jurmala.
