That´s why I finally quit visiting dog parks. Can be the most horrible place for a dog, and mostly people don´t care and play with their fucking cell phones. But the worst thing is most of the owners don´t know anything about their dog´s behaviour and body signals. Horrible.

From someone who worked at a dog daycare I appreciate this video. Everyone who owns a dog should know good play versus bad play. I am terrified to bring my 10 pound dog to a dog park because of other owners not knowing the different kinds of play, and the fact that some owners are just plain neglectful.

Today I took my 10lb dog to the dog park for the first time ever and it did not go well. Everyone dog in the park was great and played well until this husky comes running full speed trampling and pouncing on my dog repeatedly making him cry out.

I have a 20 pound min pin mix and I have noticed that the dogs at normal dog parks are playful but they are more aggressive/protective than the dogs at rich neighborhood dog parks. My dog would smell the other dogs at the normal dog parks and then wants to stay close to us but at the rich dog parks he is playing the whole time and the dogs are more friendly. I think that the rich owners have no stress in there life so they are relaxed which gives the dog positive energy

Annie O True that, ive been going to dogs frequently and every time theres an altercation it seems like its a husky. Seems like they are prone to being problem dogs, maybe husky owners share a common trend, that they are unwilling to discipline their dogs /:

This is so incredibly useful. Our dog (fairly large) began chasing and darting at certain small dogs and I have started to carefully observe what precedes this behavior. The smaller dogs have a very submissive posture, often with their tails down, and clearly have some fear. Our dog then appears to become aroused/alert and focused. This video clearly shows the behavior in the pups and in our dog that is going on. I think this video is spot on. I'm really surprised that some people can't see the brown dog is desperate for help/intervention. I'm working out how to train our dog not to react as it does (he's been doing it for about 3 months) but it's terribly important to anticipate the event so that I can intervene. This is extremely helpful. Thank you!

Snapper do you really believe that in a natural setting that someone would come out of the forest and protect the small brown dog? No. It's unrealistic to even think so, so why would it happen here. Socialization is the key to almost every problem in a pack. As far as your dog goes it's great that you see that there is a problem. I commend you for that. If it we're me, I'd take longer walks. Get rid of more excess energy before heading out to socialize with other dogs. Check your local meetups. Most cities have groups that get together for pack walks and other socialization events. If you really believe your dog is showing predatory behavior toward smaller dogs this socializing in smaller packs on leash with smaller dogs will help fix this.

@Snapper: thanks for being honest and open about your dog. It shows you really care about your dog and open to resolve the issue instead of ignoring the wrong behaviour. Long walk before going to dog park is good idea to reduce the excitement as he is too tired to get excited. Hopefully it works for you. Good luck 👍

I think separate areas for small and for big dogs aren't necessarily a bad thing! But I believe the most important thing is, that small dogs learn to socialize with big dogs and vice versa. This is the best way to prevent unwanted scenes! A big dog learns that a small dog isn't something to chase and the small dogs learns that a big dog isn't something to bark at nor to be afraid of. I own two small dogs and we only have mixed dogparks where I live! The dogs there, regardless of their size, get along pretty well actually.

That poor little brown dog REALLY needs to be socialized and her confidence raised. She's making herself a target for this kind of behavior from other, more dominant or aggressive dogs. As you said, she shouldn't be at the dog park, but this is an issue that needs to addressed and remedied for her, regardless of the dog park. She is too fearful and nervous, in general. I agree she was seeking help from that human, whom I assume was her human and "pack leader." The leader is supposed to provide protection, but the person was oblivious to what was going on and what was being asked of her. She should have corrected the other dogs, thereby providing some space for the little brown dog.

We 've just been trough a situation like this at the beach... a boxer/lab mix 25kg layed down and start stalking slowlier, then faster and finally started hunting our 3kg 6months old miniature poodle... before he even could come closer my husband said loudly no!!! and walked in the direction of this large dog...but nothing could help it, he started hunting her and not a word from the owner of this dog... instead of picking her up ( i have heard that this can make a hunting dog even more willing to "catch" the one that was picked up and jump up and bite or so?!) thats why i was scared to do this... The best thing comes now: The owner of this dog where highly amused that their dog ONLY WANTS TO PLAY !!!!! Im getting so angry think about what just happend... Man, my dog is no toy or rabbit for your dog. And the worst is that they couldnt even call their dog back!!! Their dog wasnt even listening to them. If you dont have your dog under control you shouldnt let him run around and harass other dogs without even knowing what is happening there.... SO they said: "Why dont you pick up your dog? We cant pick up our big dog ha ha." ... Guys... no one want you to pick up your large dog but what is important to make it listen to you and not ignoring. Im not having a dog or going on a walk with her TO ALWAYS pick her up when we cross another dog ?! and make her feel that every dog could potentially be dangerous that definitely not good for her "socializing".. 50 meters further there was an really friendly labrador and they both were calmed down sniffing and thats it... Im sitting here making plans how to react next time in a better way. Maybe you can help me. One thing i have found out(i think i was also one of your videos) is to crouch down and touch her to make clear that im her owner and im taking care of here so the other dog stops hunting her? Or will he also run me over if he doesnt care? I will definitly try this next time because this happens a lot when the dogs are bigger then her - she gets easily scared and runs away- this is always her defense. Never biting NEVER barking or growling - always running away and beeing a rabbit, maybe its her age i dont know but since we got her shes the shy one. no touching by strangers really cautious about everything what she doesnt know.. Normally if we see a bigger dog coming closer to fast that she is scared we let her behind us or say no to the dog that the owner knows that we dont want this, if the situation is clear, the dog is friendly not hunting and Ivy is also relaxed and interessed we let them interact .. We dont know how to teach her to defend herself... and shes not even submitting to any other dog. Excuse me for my english please but english is my 3. language and i havent been speaking is for a while...

I loudly told a women to take her dog and leave the park today. Her dog was scared running around. The owner kept yelling at the other owners to get their dogs away from hers. Scared dogs and dogs lacking confidence or the socialization to interact quietly at the park shouldn’t be there and make it dangerous for the others.

Thank you for the educational video. This why as the owner we should never loosing our sight from our beloved dog. My almost a year old Beagle girl loves being chased, she always running then come back only to tease (she always showing a play bow gesture everytimes she approaching the chaser dog 🤦♀️) and then she'll running again. I'm aware about the dangerous at the dog park (never brought her to such a park) so i only released her leash on my neighborhood's secluded park (which only some of my neighbors know) and i only allowed her to play with her dogs friends (mostly she knew them since she was a little puppy and some of them are her walking buddies).

The dog park that I take my dog to has a area for small and large dogs which I think is great. I remember one time some lady try to bring her little dog into to the big dog area. Right as the little dog stepped in he started barking and got the attentions of all the big dogs then people started telling the lady please take your dog to the correct area and she didn't listen. Now the hunt is on lol...that little thing got chased, stepped on, dog pile you name it. The little dog was fine but the owner wasn't and try to tell everyone to train their dogs to play nice with other dogs at the dog park. Why do so many people with little dogs never take the time to train them and Just let them rule everything? I see this all the time that little dog owners can't never control their dog not even a simple command as sit?

thank you Sue. I urge everyone here who is defending the behaviour of the aggressor dogs to learn about dog behaviour. It takes a lot of time and thousands of hours of observation and analysis to get as good at understanding dog body language as Sue is. She sees things that most dog people do not. I think unless we can match her experience it is wiser to listen, learn from her observations and ask question like why she thinks it is not "just play" rather than dismiss the interpretation. Cheers.

I feel a lot better about an interaction I had with a random dog wandering the streets while walking my in-laws cairn terrier. An English staffy appeared out of nowhere while my dog was doing a poo, ears up, hackles up, tail stiff and slowly wagging, no barking, mouth open and eyes only for my dog. I only had a second to evaluate and react so I picked my dog up and starting backing away, using a front kick to keep the dog at bay, as I continued to back away. The dog on the ground was just staring at the dog in my arms and it took a good 10 shoves in the face before it backed down and stopped following us. I thought maybe I had over reacted but this video feels very similar to what happened.

@kathypetuck59139 жыл бұрын
I am surprised by the number of people that thought this was playing. Even if no harm was done, it was aggression and should have been interrupted. A slightly larger dog kept "riding" on my dog at the park when he was younger. I intervened several times and should have asked the owner to stop it but finally just took my dog home. I don't believe he was in danger but he was clearly stressed and ran to the gate when I said we were leaving. The other owner actually asked if we could get the dogs together again since they "played together so well!" I was a new owner at the time and didn't have the confidence to explain to her what I thought was happening. On the other hand I feel that sometimes people want to stop what really is play at the park. I have a 34 lb dog. If both tails are wagging and neither dog is stiff or acting dominant or frightened and they take turns jumping and chasing that is play even if they jump on each other and have their mouths wide open.
@peregoyb10 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really matter why the other dog is chasing or harassing the small dog - it is not appropriate to allow your dog to intimidate the smaller dog. Many young dogs are not totally appropriate with others in the dog park - that's why the owner is responsible for interrupting when their dog behaves this way.

I took my one year old pekineses mix (10lbs) to the dog park for the first time ever today and everything was great, playing with dogs larger and also near her size (labs, pit bulls, german shepherds). All was fine until she met a husky puppy that was similar to the one in the video, about a year old im guessing. Trampled my poor dog with his paws multiple times making him cry out. The other people at the park in the immediate area tried to separate the husky the instant it happened but the husky kept getting a running start and pouncing on my poor 10lb dog, then my dog would run scared making it difficult to catch him. I learned its nearly impossible to protect a smaller dog running erratically trying to dodge a husky who is going full speed at him. The nice people at the dog park made a human wall to force him into a corner until we could get my crying dog. I didn't just want to leave and let him have a bad memory of dog parks but my poor dog spent the rest of the time walking with me inbetween my legs just in case that husky was going to trample him again.. The nice labs and pitbulls came up to check if he was ok and my poor guy thought they were going to treat him like a rag doll too. No more dog parks for him... From what I've seen husky's are to aggressive to be near smaller dogs during playtime.

This video clip takes place at the "Dog Training Area" in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco (36th and Fulton) This was my "office" for years. I am now a doggie daycare facility owner (from being a walker using the dog run) Let me say that this was/is very typical behavior amongst the "private owners" at this dog park. This footage was taken either later on in the afternoon when the professional walkers were gone or sometime on the weekend. Two things. I see no pro walkers there. Also, I do not see Walter Suenaga the 30 plus year dog run volunteer (he is there 7 days a week, but leaves at 4PM) Sue is right on the money with her comments. The husky is owned by an SF Native who was more than likely in his truck eating a burrito or outside the fenced area talking with someone, not paying attention to his dangerous dog (He also does not pick up poop) The other owners are clueless. There is also a dog outside the fenced area roaming around, very close to the parking lot, not being watched as well.

The only problem I see here is the social skills of the little brown dog. No one can say if that lady was the owner or what the owners intentions were. Maybe they are trying to socialize the little brown dog since it clearly has social problems. I've seen many neglected dogs big and small act the same way. Also that husky isn't showing any hostile traits. Huskies tend to hold their tail above their back naturally, unless they feel threatened. If you don't know this, dogs play by chasing one another. What your seeing is the natural alpha, beta, omega class structure within pack animals. I used to have a 100 pound gsd which would act who was the beta to the older 30 pound springer spaniel and it would act the same way as the smaller dogs, but it was socialized so it wasn't scared of everything like the brown dog. Yes you should keep an eye on unleashed dogs when in conjunction, but saying the bigger dog is aggressive and possible hostile just because of its size is a drastic and unsubstantiated claim. Many small dogs are just as if not more aggressive than large dogs. Any size dog can instigate an accident, just smaller dogs are just more likely to be caused harm. I think you are biased and overdramatizing a 5 minute clip to enforce a certain reaction.
@janemann27565 жыл бұрын
What a great video. Very well explained. More people should learn body language of their dogs. Too many dogs here in the UK running riot in parks. I never let my dog of lead in parks. This is why I believe in separate areas for large and small dogs. A mixed park sometimes works but if something goes wrong the small dog can easily be killed. A little potential fun is not worth the risk. It's like mixing light and heavy weight boxers, not a fair fight.
@DavidEVogel7 жыл бұрын
Dog dominance at the park is common. The problem with dominance is that it can quickly escalate to aggression, and aggression is where dogs get hurt. Owners should watch their dogs for signs of dominance (bullying, mounting, not backing off when another dog surrenders).
@lauratrir40610 жыл бұрын
Some of the comments dismiss the behavior of the aggressive dogs saying it is play. It isn't. Playing dogs give and take. In other words, one is submissive then the other one is. They may chase a little bit, but not like what is seen here. It is OUR responsibility to know and understand dog behavior. For those who suggest the submissive dog should learn to face there fear is RUBBISH! It is your responsibility to protect and guide them, not put them in a potentially dangerous situation.

Fascinating and informative. I feel bad for the little brown dog...if I were a dog owner, I would keep a larger eye on the little dog not for fear of other dogs getting aggressive, but because I used to own some large breed dogs that frequently forgot how big and heavy they were when they were playing. It's really easy for a larger dog to step on a smaller animal, especially if the larger animal is a little stupid, haha.

To me, the husky appeared to be showing dominance, not predatory behavior. The head and tail held high, with ears pricked forward indicate this. The dominance struggle can definitely cause a fight though. I have seen predatory behavior between a german shepherd and a Chihuahua. The shepherd lowered the head in alignment with the shoulders, crouched down just a little, and walked in quiet, deliberate steps, until it ran up with a burst of energy to the Chihuahua. Almost like how you see a lion approaching a gazelle.

In the end the rattie and black and tan terrier did back off eventually so it was settled. I do see how obvious the dog was pleading for help. I can't believe how people won't help them, I myself am a owner of a rat terrier pup and correct her on getting too excited with play, she is still very young at 7 months and she's getting better. I'd never let her be bullied nor allow her to be too rough with others. If you're not going to be there to do anything it's just as bad as not being there at all, as if you dropped off your dog and left the park.

I more often see inappropriate small dogs lashing out at any other dogs than so-called big dogs does...my husky has never harmed any dogs, but when a dogs doesn't act like dogs, she gets very curious. I belive many small dogs are humanised, overprotected and insecure.

I quit going to the dog park a long time ago because of dog owners not correcting their dog's behavior. Some of those dunderheads assume that it's just dogs being dogs until something goes terribly wrong. I mean, why would you bring a 15 lb dog into an enclosure intended for larger dogs? And this one guy thought that his 80 lb lab humping every dog in the park was just "one of those dog things" and he refused to take corrective action to the dismay of everyone in the dog park. Everything went south when the lab incessantly began humping my 50 lb. American Staffordshire, because she went into all out honey badger aggression mode and almost tore his face off. I never went back to that park.

So I have a huskey and he does this sometimes and I don’t know how to stop it! What do I do! I do follow him but it’s random who he will chase like that! I have chronic illness so the dog park is the best exercise I can give him but I don’t want him to hurt another dog

Thanks for the video. My 1.5year old aussi cattle/hound dog mix acts like that husky. I thought he was playing. Ooops. Is there anyway to stop this behavior or are there certain breeds that just don't belong in the dog park?

As an aside, the aroused behavior seen in the husky can be presented when dogs are really and truly playing as long as it is returned by the other dog(s) and is followed by 'goofy' behavior such as play bowing and the tense body language 'breaks' once the dogs are in motion. My pyrenees mix girls frequently display this behavior but always follow it with play bowing, jaw clashing (kinda like alligators), rolling, wrestling, etc and their tails tend to take on more of a loose curve when in motion.

I have a 16lb dachshund and contemplating taking him to a dog park. His problem is that if a large dog gets near him, he becomes aggressive ("Dachshund" is german for "badger hunter", they don't know fear even when they should). This is because of aggression shown towards him by two larger dogs during his walks. He does fine with dogs closer to his size, loves people and especially the ladies. I'm starting to go against the idea.

This video will make owners of small dogs even more paranoid. The only correct thing she said is the brown dog being scared, but she misinterpreted all the other dogs´ behavior. The Pinscher and Rat Terrier`s behavior resulted from too much huma interference in previous situations, so the dogs never had a chance to learn to watch out for other dogs` body language themselves. I see such behavior very often, but never in dogs that haven`t been humanized or just generally spend more time with other dogs than with humans. My dog used to be similarly pushy (though not as threatening) when I got him, but after I gave him the opportunity to have regular contact with stable dogs, he`s learned to be just as calm when he meets others. He doesn`t even let himself be provoked by leashed dogs that are lunging at him. And yes, the Rat Terrier did intervene because he wanted to prevent a fight. Most dominant dogs won`t allow fights between other dogs, and this one obviously considers itself "dominant". Our dominant dog always stays out of play sessions between the other dogs; the only time she intervenes is if she sees the bigger dogs getting too rough with the smaller ones. So you can`t chalk it up to her wanting a fight, otherwise she wouldn`t stay out of it the rest of the time. Update: I’ve learned my lesson, this video is correct.

I swear I hate people at the dog park that cannot control/get involved when their dogs show dominance and try to control other dogs. Then when you notice it and try to stop the problem with the dog the owner gets all butthurt that you shouldn’t talk to their dog that way smh

PEOPLE PEOPLE!! If you have a dog you will know what to do. First of all if you take your dog to the dog park you need to let your dog loos even if your unsure and your dog has fear. Second of all if a dog comes and approach your dog let them do what they need to do sometimes the dog who is approaching your dog will try to play with your dog and your dog dos not want to play. And now last but not least there is one thing she did not do. She did not push her dog away. That is one thing you need to do. Her dog keeps going to her. If you let your dog do that your dog will then try to attack the dog who comes to the owner. That is called overly aggressive. If you have a dog and your unsure about your dogs behave and you want to take your dog to the dog park. you need to use a yellow ribbon around your dogs neck or you can cross your ribbon and put it on your dogs collar. God i'm a kid and i know this allready.

Very good, but I will say that at times it is appropriate to have a dog (or child, for that matter) face their fears. If you swoop in and rescue them every moment they show fear they will only become more fearful. My small dog will sometimes be fearful, with the tail between the legs, for the first few minutes at a dog park. I always take a good hard look at the other dogs and try to make sure there is nothing too dominant or aggressive. Within a few minutes she will be running and playing.

This is an AMAZING video. As someone who has worked at multiple dog day cares and went through vet tech school, everything you said was on point. I had a leave a dog beach once because a pint sized, obese terrier was being very aggressive toward a golden I was sitting. He'd chase her whenever she ran for the ball, bark while baring his teeth, and even lunged at her neck a couple of times. If she hadn't been so focused on the ball and if the terrier had been a little bigger, I know a fight would have broken out. Even though nothing happened, I still left because I was infuriated that the owner of the terrier was just letting her dog be so aggressive. If I see her again, I'm going to say something to her before I leave. People with small dogs can be so incredibly clueless.

Good video! Fully understand the dogs are acting out😣I see nobody there to advocate for their dogs. And then you have the idiots who bring toys and food into the dogpark bringing more excitment and competition between the dogs. Most dog owners cant tell apart play and what is serious, and have no real bond with their dogs.We run a private dogpark and all the dogs are evaluated and trained before getting in. We cant take chances like this. It is horrific to watch!

I foster greyhounds and test for prey drive with small dogs/cats before they go to their forever homes. The husky did not view the small dog as prey because he did not kill it. I like this video tho because the message is needed: Wake up people!!! The average dog owner is oblivious to the danger a small dog faces when taken to a dog park. A high prey drive dog can kill a small dog within seconds of meeting it. I had one try and do just this .. but hauled him off just before he got his jaws around the little dog. The worst offenders are the toy dog owners who think it's cute when their little dog barks and jumps up at a big dog (off leash or on flex-leashes). Or insist that their little dog has to play in the big dog section of the dog park.

I have 2 boxers and 1 pitt. I never go to dog park, its mostly trouble cause most dogs are raised to be dominant over their humans. And when they try dominance over one of my dogs, mines ofc act as a pack. And it can cause minor fights, so i advice walks with group of dogs that you know they can adapt after trying. Not every dog you meet in dog park are good physcoligy, some are pretty teoubled dogs. But i agree chiuaua doesnt belong in the park cause of breeds agression. They are small but super agressive dogs. Def agrresive but still it provactes other dogs cause of their anxiety. Anyway glad nothing happened, not that it seems like it would

That's pretty shameful that as a pittie owner you're encouraging BSL on Chihuahuas and labeling them as all aggressive. I'm a huge pit lover and advocate, and hate to see the discrimination (and worse) that is put on them, so never label other breeds negatively. I have a female boxer myself and face discrimination at the dog park simply because she's a big, muscly bully breed. Small breeds definitely aren't my favourite, but I have learned that most small breed owners don't bother socializing them or correcting them properly, leading to aggression, nipping and yappy issues. If I'd raised a Chihuahua from 8.5 weeks old instead of my boxer, you can be damn sure I wouldn't be letting the Chi run around yapping, nipping and being human/dog aggressive. Any breed can belong in the dog park, it's all about the individual dog and its energy and temperament - which a large part is how they were raised (or rehabilitated if they were rescued/rehomed when they were no longer in the puppy stage).

Could you say what we ARE supposed to do? We own three dogs and 2 of them are fine (really). But the youngest one seems scared of everything thats not normal to him and he shows the same behaviour as the small Brown dog then. We did take him everywhere as a pup and still do , we keep going to dog training every week and there is just a small group and there he behaves not so scared.

I've had to leave dog parks because my dog will act just like this Husky with little fearful dogs. Northern breeds are friendly, but have high prey drives and love to chase (prey). I'll politely ask the owner of the small dog to move to the small dog area, but if they don't I leave.

This need to be watch to all dog owner. It s a good information told in this video. I have just got a bad experience with dog park with ignorance dog owner. His dog was bullying, nipping and chasing other dogs The owner said it s only playing so no need to make a fuss. This kind dog owner make dog park become unpleasant experience to other dog and it s not fair for other good dogs.
