She had the most soft personality among her siblings, hard to get foods and toys from her siblings. We brought her home, then she got some healthy issues, been sent to ER couple times before she’s 5 months old. It’s our mistake didn’t let her meet other dogs at her puppyhood, that’s why we brought her to Joel. She’s getting better right now but still has a long way to go.

I am a delivery driver, and I recognize a lot of these techniques are what I use for myself in relation to new dogs. There are very few instances for me that I will abort a delivery due to a dog. A lot of the indicators mentioned in this video are what I see in some dogs that I have first contact with, I just never knew how to explain it to my coworkers. For me it only takes a few seconds to see if the dog is serious about defending the territory in the first place. I never take my eyes off the animal until I leave or have established a rapport over time.

Same here. I also use biscuits for any loose dogs I encounter to gauge their friendliness or willingness to accept food from a stranger. Those completely uninterested are usually too nervous or aggressive to approach so I don't attempt to get any closer. I've made quite a few buddies along my route this way and several look forward to seeing me.

I see so many dogs at the dog park do the stand-over-shoulder thing and no owner ever corrects it. My dog sometimes will play but usually hates it. There’s an epidemic of poorly trained human owners.

I walk my friend’s dog. So I started out as a ‘badly trained owner’ due to not growing up with dogs. But instead I educate myself to improve and help for the dog. It’s very difficult to actually be a good trainer and/or handler. I wish we could all be naturally talented to train dogs. LOL But I take it day by day and watch videos like this to at least help me better understand what the dog needs and what the dog is communicating and how I can communicate better with the dog.

My roommate has a Doberman and unfortunately she does the same movements that the golden doodle + puppy do. She’s about to be 2. And it’s always brushed off by them as her “playing” and my older dogs getting annoyed , pinned, circled, cornered to the point where they lash out and the Doberman doesn’t get it. Sad because I could see her running into huge issues down the road :(

I have no formal training but I always love watching these videos and being happy I’m doing it correctly. I have over 10 dogs that I’ve been looking after for the last few years. Most came when they were 1 year old or younger. My own dog was only 4 months when this began and it’s been interesting and challenging to get them through their stages. No doubt Joel’s video’s helped in many ways.

This is super helpful! My dog (mix breed) has extremely visible and active hackles - her hackles alone do not actually communicate much, without context from her tail and other factors. She has a chow chow curly tail that is very very expressive. High curl perky adorable happy tail = good to go. Full hackles + low set straight tail = baby girl is not happy about something. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Every time another dog comes along. The dogs and the owners seem so miserable. I see them blast off the trail because they don't want any other dog close to theirs. I have one of those good dogs, not as talented as Prince obviously because I'm not Joel but, I have had such negative experiences with my other dogs that were not dog friendly and so it was never an option to go say hi to friends. So when one of my pups was obviously just a different guy I saw these good qualities about him. He would encourage our other dogs when they weren't sure about things and he would also let them know hey that wasn't okay for you to do but didn't take it there. For a long time I called him the pack mediator although also the class clown. He is Always calm and steady never freaks out and never reacts to anything in a bad way. Just very confident and therefore he doesn't feel a need to get nervous or aggressive. I knew I wanted to make sure that I gave my dog the opportunity to have the very best life and not restrained by behaviors brought on by me. So very early I made sure to expose him to anything and everything and just made sure that he could exist confidently in any environment. At a-year-old I Began my process of making me a prince. Literally that was My goal. I've been the one desperate to find that dog to help my own dogs for so long that I knew that what I had was pretty dang special and could benefit a lot of other dogs. I don't have a dog training business so I don't get as many dogs to get with him but I would say that he has probably met over a hundred dogs without anyone ever getting bit. My dog (that one at least)is not the problem it is totally me. All those negative experiences in the past has created some kind of trauma response in me and I'm unable to allow things to happen naturally as they need to. I'm always stepping in because I don't trust the other dogs ever so when diesel lets me know that he's not really enjoying the situation I'm usually going to step in either to just encourage him or advocate for him. And although every situation isn't safe to allow him to correct other dogs, I don't even let another dog get on his nerves long enough to let him correct them. My anxiety gets the best of me and I know that my anxiety can make it go bad and so I am very careful so how do I get rid of that in myself and allow him to provide that help to others. I know he's capable of correcting without going too far because he does it all the time at home with my other dogs. When we're out on our walks I will allow him to go up to fences unless I'm not feeling the dog on the other side of the fence. But he will always stoically and calmly just exist in front of the fence for these yapping Maniacs on until they calmed their little butts down and then he engaged them in some type of play behavior and it is so awesome to watch that other dog calm down and get used to him. After that they get excited to see him coming. We have so many friends in our neighborhood(dog friends) And it's a real feel good feeling when you realize how amazing this dog is and you had something to do with it. People in our city probably know the lady with big white dog because we walk everywhere and say hi to everybody and it's not because I'm a social butterfly. Something about him just draws people to want to come say hi to him. So how do I stop standing in his way?

It would be awesome to see more body language videos. My dog does confusing things such as lip licking when he is getting pet and keeps coming back for more pets, but keeps lip licking too. Understanding these kinds of behaviors in various contexts would be helpful so I can get more inside the head of my cane corso.

She’s a Carolina Dog breed. Exact same look and mannerisms as mine. She is playful but dominant. If you have 2 dogs, she is boss. Best guard dog I’ve ever had. She keeps my GSD in check and trains him. Both breeds shed like crazy so daily brushing is required.

I have a 5 month old puppy who was with her litter mates up until 2.5 months. She LOVES all dogs and people. She goes nuts when she sees another dog and wants to play non stop. She lives for other dogs, lol. Older dogs have corrected her and she is fine. She is a ball of energy and a lot of work but she is aawesome. Great video, I have 2 Corso’s and my male I got as a pup. He’s very socialised with people and dogs and so long as other male dogs don’t try and dominate him he loves to play. But I will say that I did make a mistake once as I did what you did in the video and stroked the other male dog we came across on our walk, and my male being very jealous doesn’t like that from other dogs and pinned the other dog to the floor and wouldn’t stop barking at that dog. He wouldn’t listen even when I called him off and I had to pull him off the other dog. After I realised he didn’t actually bite the other dog but the other male was terrified obviously. Had a different situation when a male pointer who was lost on a hunting expedition came up to us. I didn’t see the dog until my female went to see the dog, both of them were off leash and the pointer snapped at her and but a air shot to warn her, I tried to grab my male but before I could he intervened and just stood there chest out. I didn’t want to stab him as I thought it may make it worse, the pointer being scared at this point came up to me for reassurance but my male blocked him off and I could see he was ready to smash this dog up, I had to tell the dog to move and held my hands in the air so as to not provoke my male. My gut was telling me that if I tried to be nice to the other dog my male would bite him! For reference he’s never actually had a fight and never bitten any dog ever (I have tried to protect him as much as possible). He also has a huge prey drive and is very lean and athletic at 47.5kg. Amazing with other dogs normally and even better with kids. Just curious to see what anyone thinks about those times???

Love what you do on here by posting videos to help others, Etc, Much appreciate it and I have learned a lot from your channel and content alone, I just adopted a new to me German Shepherd, I also have two other dogs which are smaller breeds, He originally would aggressively bark at them and run or lunge at them, I have gotten him to calm down and his bark now sounds more like a "Hey what about me" yelp instead of aggressive, Is this a good sign I am making progress? I am still concerned with the running and lunging at them attitude, My next step is to use his kennel more often to keep them apart yet get familiar with each other.

We just moved in about 3 months ago and our neighbors have 3 dogs very aggressive my daughter and daughter in law had my grandchildren outside in the front yard not fenced in and he just lets his dogs out no leash and they run up hairs raised up and chased them inside...They chase the other pets in the neighborhood and even went after my elderly neighbor...she called the police but nothing was done...so yesterday my daughter had my female pittie outside in the backyard fenced in...my daughter normally takes my granddaughter out with them but she kept her inside...good thing she did my daughter starts screaming one of the dogs got in my fence going for my daughter my looney tunes stopped her kept her at the fence line she was not actually attacking her just like nipping at the other dog run her back...No damage to my dog...My daughter had enough time time to run in to get help...It took maybe two times for my daughter in law to call my dogs name she came right to use...I love my babies..

Need more videos like this, although I'm guessing there's a part of this of ready dog body language that comes with experience. Yes, another dog does need to teach another! My young male lab-mix comes with me to visit friends. Their older female lab doesn't mind him, but when he tried to get too friendly she told him a firm NO, back off kid. Just got a puppy and one night while packaging raw chicken my back was turned. She took advantage of the situation to steal some chicken. The lab-mix made a lot of noise and got her into the dog surrender position with his mouth on her throat. It was scary while happening but I knew he wouldn't hurt her and I realized that he was correcting the puppy - telling her that stealing is wrong

I could really use some advice. My older dog died so I decided to get a puppy because my 3 year old shih poo Teddy was lonely. I got a 12 week old pit puppy named Jasper and a week later someone dropped off a 14 week old black shepherd mix because they couldn’t keep him who we named Taz. I had just planned on finding him a good home but my son fell in love. All 3 dogs got along pretty good in the beginning. Teddy would correct the pups when they got too rough but now they are 9 months old and much bigger. As they got older the pups started getting way to rough when they play and then for some reason the pit pup has become aggressive towards the shepherd. He would only growl at first and Taz would walk away. Taz is now bigger than him and has decided he isn’t going to put up with it anymore so he growls and barks back then they end up in a major dog fight! As in blood is shed! The pit who usually starts it ends up bleeding and the furry shepherd lucks out most of the time.I have a hard time separating them. They won’t listen to any commands when they get that way and I physically have to drag one into another room or into a crate. It seems like jasper is resource guarding but he only gets aggressive with Taz the shepherd never with Teddy and not with me unless I am trying to keep him from going after Taz. I have already gotten bitten in the mix trying to break up the fight. It isn’t all the time and they have only gotten into a couple full on fights but each time was bad… like going for the throat I’m gonna kill you bad 😮most of the time they are best buddies snuggling on the bed and stuff. I have started to watch for the signs and quickly separate them before the get the chance to fight but that means they have to be crated any time I can’t be right there. I had hoped that getting them neutered would help but it has been a month and it has gotten worse. I am probably going to have to rehome one of them if I can’t figure this out. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you 🙏

I adopted a white female GSD when she was 1 year old and now she is 2. My dog is exactly like the white GSD in this video...undersocialize with dogs. I do not have lots of friends who have dogs and I do not trust stranger's dogs. I feel like I could make the situation even worse if I am not able to give my dog a proper introduction to other dogs 😞And yes, 4:00 this method is what I heard the most 😅

🇳🇵Namaste Mr. Beckman! Well the vid does not help my situation, but i do appreciate the tips :) In Nepal 🇳🇵, where I am, there are pet dogs that are hardly walked in the street or otherwise seen, and literally tens of thousands of street dogs that I can use for desensitivity training; none of my pals would bring their dog over to my place and here is why: I am working with a 6-year old (more or less) Leonberger that weighs almost as much as I do at 80kg, But I have a good harness/lead set up, and I've gotten him sensitized to a few small street dogs in our neighborhood where I walk him twice a day. I've had him for two years, and he went from being the largest dog running WILD in Kathmandu, to a fairly trained and great household pet -thx to the Beckman method! Bernie loves people, but pretty much goes after any dog he's not familiar with... his goto move is to vice grip the opponent's neck between his jaws and bring it down underneath him. So that makes my walks everyday a bit... scary. I can tell from his language (on lead, always) when he's about to blow, or not. I can even spidey sense other dogs around corners now, and I mentally note where every street dog lives within a 2 kilometer radius. I wish I could desensitize him more, but not sure how or if even possible. Thanks for listening!

You said it so well….trains asking us to treat and let it watch…..and big price to such training. We have a dog who is like one in this video he’s a big 7 month old pup all brown and white paw, because of his size and appearance few neighborhood who have dog doesn’t want him to desensitize and due to that he always brake frantically when he sees them on walk….I don’t let him sit on our balcony because of this behaviour…..any suggestion..please.

@bdogtraining what would you say that the shaking is indicative of? I see prince do it quite frequently after dealing with dogs. Like a reset or a way to kind of say "ok, that situation is over"? I see it a lot after stressful-ish situations with dogs in general but you know your dog. I feel like its back to 0 with mine. 0 being even/ chill and calm, negative leaning towards tail between legs and 10 being like full fight mode.

The problem with prong collars is the fact they induce an amount of pain. So ask yourself, did the dog listen to your command, or did the dog listen because s/he didn't want to feel the pain? Swap roles and put a prong collar on yourself. Now are you listening because someone asked you to do something, or did you listen because you didn't want to feel the pain of that collar? In other words, when that prong collar comes off, are you going to listen because someone asked, or will you now ignore them knowing that the pain won't come from that collar now that it's off of you?

Sadly, there are several dog owners in my condo complex who do not understand dog body language. And it gets taken out on my dog (almost 5 year old intact male Doberman) because they think "Oh! That's a Doberman. It's GOING to kill my dog." and they won't let their dog play with him. These are the same people who have witnessed my dog playing with other dogs that are smaller than their dogs. Sammy will lay down and let the little dogs jump and climb on him. Yeah, that's a vicious Doberman alright.

my shi tsu mix loves other dogs but doesnt seem to like big dogs very much. he used to get along pretty well with them until I moved to a country where a lot of dogs free roam and one dashed out of the house and attacked him. he was ok and I managed to scare the other dog off but now evry time he sees a large dog he barks and tries to bite them even when they are being sweet. its sad how it only takes one dog and one terrible owner to undo years of training and socialization.

I have a 5 month old German Shepard Girl and she does good meeting new dogs and people, but she doesn't get excited at all meeting them. I did get her a week ago now and she is starting to warm up by playing with her toys and such but meeting new dogs, she just doesn't act like a puppy at all or gets excited to see them. Is this something to be concerned about?

(Need a video link) Wow had this 1 hour ago with a male white German shepard, who im familiar with that he wants to attack my dog, mine is a (rescue ) mix with some working labrador in it, medium size), the owner had him of leash so i called and grabbed my dog and walk away telling the shepard owner to call her dog as she knows het dog doesnt like mine and will attack, the owner calls but the dog doen't listen, and starts to attack my dog, when my dog gets attacked he start to defend himself (he would not attacks himself but starts to defend when atacked) , i grabbed her dog and hold them both seperate, it took bloody 30 second before she got a grip on her dog. luck he was not aggressive to me, just fixated to Yaxs (my dog) Next time i see the male owner who is more of the boss of the dog i would like him to show a vid that covers that kind of behavour, where he can learn how to correct his dog as he does not know how to at this moment.

Hmm.. doodles like to wrestle to play. I have a Samoyed and doodles, poodles and my Samoyed do that to each others all the time and they wrestle and play until exhausted without any problems. The priblem not all dogs like to play like that. One of my neighbor has a doberman and same as the one in this video, she does not like wrestling but never had any problem since my dog figured out she does not like so he did that to her only a few time at the beginning and stopped.

Mine has been socialized alot. But some days not. He is 7 months hes been removed from hus brother my nieces dog, because when hers plays, it grabs mone by the fur of his neck or close n its rough play. I didn't like what i had seen. Both difs have seperation anxiety since we got them. I assumed left mom too early. I think they were onky 6 weeks, maybe 5. My dog loves ppl other dogs. He gets so excited he chirps n does thus weird anxious squeelin not barking freakin out until i introduce him. He wants to be pet or addressed by ppl n dogs. Not everyone likes it it scaees them cuz mine us a blue nose pit pure white. And blue nose heeler. I believe the mom has sone jack Russell but im not sure how much lol i know weurd right father is full blue nose pit n well behaved n calm mom is hyper. They address ppl barking n checking them out dad seems serious, but hes a suck. No issue's in parents thus far. The father is trained like a coos dog. Kniws to take ppl down if they cane on property with a weaoon n hes registred by police to know he will react if anyone steps on property agressively or weapons drawn im not sure where he came from ir why he was raised that way. Anyhow when i introduce my dig to ppl n dogs hes fine. Lately his hair will pop up. I am not sure why he diesnt griwl he sniff n checks other dogs. He does well but im sensing some nervous. Others are saying no thats a bad sign. I live in a building with many types odmf dogs. Some agressive so i just avoid them as do they me. He used to meet a larger one evetyday he loved him but now the gurl goes to my balcony n gets mine going n she does it fir hrs n mine will bark n bark n druve everyone crazy. But if i mert them hes excuted acts nirmal n if he gets too silly hers will again out him in its place. He does go to the diur n sniffs hardcore loud to see which dog is at my door n either wines or barks like ceazy. Ppl cone by bang on ny door on purpose or shake keys or skam carts into my door its set him off barking. Now its become a usual thing. He hears them before i do n runs n sniffs large n barks. Ive bern making him come back in livingroom ive blocjed the hallway as we have some not so great ppl in the building now or ppl that do it on purpose at crazy hrs all thru nite n early morning. He pulls flies toward ppl to get pet so does the fkyin leasg jump stuff this is all new sorta. I bern workin with him. Hes so hyoer always when e sees my niece or baby niece jumps all over them linking face sonetimes lick nips noses. Hes getting strong bigger n its overwhelming for me ppl that know him new ppl or hyper ppl thst thinks its funny n playful n they seem to mess with him n get it going ive asjed plz dont do that he wont settle diwn hes reactibg in ways hes not allowed too but ppl dont akways get it or listen. Hes a pit first n foremost. He's a great dog very loving to all. I nedd control confidence, n i need him to have confidence n be under control in case we mert a dog that reacts badly i been wirking the leash its hard but he listens until he sees a dog or person n hes hyper n wanting to take off to them. Which i stop immed do a quivk bump pull or knee tap n bump. It wirjs i kerp the leash in two hands n kerp it short n close until i feel him not pulling n ill loose off on the leadh n altinate saying no walk nice all thru town. He us extremely sensitive to fireworks hus brain wrnt craxy even when i got him 20 mins away this dig was running n scared n it was terrible i didnt realize that woukd happen or did i know they were eing set off. He shajes panics beside me if a loud tryvk hirn etc goes off n looks at me for reassurance hed rather be on the side the truck us not when walkin very understanding . When we walk if its bern a say or two cuz im physically down n we go out nighty hell get excited n pull or looking back at me fir reassurance dies a little bounce at me n touches my habd n i tell him no walk right n he corrects himself. So i have lots of good n some stuff that coukd turn bad if i dont catch it now n maje him know hes a dog im the boss. He hstes cages he shakes terrible when i come home takes me a bit to settle him diwn but i bern turning away n pusing him iff me or avoiding him to stop what hes doing n adressibg it quickly. His nails been cut it was an issue hus dew claws could shred ya good. He dies sleep in my bed i know lol all my dogs have. I tested him kadt night with a few things of your vid n changed my commands a little more stern even tho i am anyhow n he listened so well. I know i have control hes listening until he sees ppl he knows he hasnt seen in a few days new ppl in store or dogs. I been on him to stop n its slowly working but i need to watch your training n keep on it. I also just bought the gentle halty i just wasnt sure of the side clio under his neck. They've changed them since my last dog. I never had to use mine long for my ladt dog. This being said plz help me in any areas the hair tuff standing up its light just started but hes never bit ir showed aggression to anyone or any dog. He does fet crazy tries to challenge me get lippy they also like to talk n lip these dogs Anyhow he will jump.on ne try biting my feet in a playful but loud way n he dies bark n i gotta settle him down or threaten cage by shaking it or rause my voive no get off down sit etc sorry for any spelling. I have trouble seeing the wirds here i broke my glasses lol i know these digs xan change fast so i want to be the best owner fir him n other ppl i do syck him uo i love him like hes my kid..i know i know 😂 but ud rather e honest trears etc but i am stern too 😊

If a "trainer" actually recommended that field-treat scenario , I'd know that they have no ability to control a dog in a chaotic environment, and probably can't even heel their dog. Just because people claim to "love dogs" doesn't mean they understand dogs.

Perfect example of why you should HABITUATE your dog as a puppy to children, dogs, people and generally every situation you imagine you’ll be in, as if it’s done right you avoid sensitization, saving you from the long and difficult process of desencitisation. Letting a puppy explore safe situations without intervention and learn to deal with hard situations will build confidence and mental strength, leading to a happier, more confident, less insecure dog.

I keep seeing people who never or almost never brought their dogs in dog parks and their dogs do not want to play with other dogs. Their dogs are not socialized and when a dog comes too close to them to play they attack the dog who wanted to play. Then 100% of the time, the onwer of the dog who did not want other dogs around blame other dogs especially if the dog that wanted to play is still intact. They do not correct their dogs to attack other dogs and they yell at the owner of the dog who got attacked. Oh I forgot, 95% of the time the owners of the bad dogs come to the dog parks to play fetch with their dogs. They do not understand that dog parks is the place for dogs to socialize with other dogs. It's not a place for owners to play fetch with their dogs (minus few exceptions).

😂 I'm worried for my 5 month old shiba inu... hes a super loud ball of psycho! He's very vocal & chews my older dogs shoulders. Like, the hunt drive (im assuming) is really strong, he sounds super mean, & I would be worried, if I didn't trust my dog to not hurt him or get mad. Idk, I just assume its a breed thing with the aggressive play 😅 I just can't let him play with other dogs.

@@RealSimsHouse another dog? I would worry too if you're worried at home. The more you can tamp that rowdy behavior down at home the more you'll be able to see it's about to happen with another dog. Usually easier to cut it off before it's starts too. When I had 2 dogs, my current being the younger rowdy would go full boar at the other even though he was well undersized, probably 50lbs going at 75-80 lbs at the time. The larger dog was super tolerant and even keel until he had enough but sometimes I'd stop it before it he did because I figured he needed a break and it was so relentless at times. Just general rough play to be clear. I'd never allow my dog to play like that with another dog he didn't know though, it would for sure not go over well.

@@RealSimsHouse I just watched some.of you videos. You have a predominantly heeler mix if not full no? Looks like you haven't had the Shiba too long. That heeler can handle it's own, I have a feeling if push comes to shove the Shiba will know who's boss. Heelers or cattle dogs can be very tenacious . It's good for you to be able to stop things when you've had enough too.

@@rptrick79 yeah, 😊 she's blue/ red heeler, shepherd, & coy (mom is part coy) & she's about 7 yr old. I got the pup about a month ago when he was 4mo old. She has nipped once or twice but thats it. 😂 he can get carried away at times.

When I was training my Pit to be the family guard dog I made a massive mistake in not realizing that in all of her day to day business, like going outside to potty and all that would result in her meeting with so many of the other dogs in town. *I take her out on a leash, so the interactions are always as safe as they possibly can be without the other dogs' owners*, but the mistake I made was not letting her realize that NOT everything is a threat, so now I'm having to do some backpedaling in her training so that she understands not every single living creature is a threat. So far for the past week it's been going real good, the neighbor's Golden Retriever can now come in our yard whenever he feels without Baby going absolutely nuts, *note that she has never, even when going nuts, attacked another animal. She just stands next to me sounding like a gurgling demon*. Baby also has a very nice tell on when she is excited at something, or just wants something to go away because she is scared and doesn't trust it. She shakes uncontrollably as if a 9.5 Earthquake just went off. She's gotten to the point where when she shakes all it takes is one simple command to make her stop and ignore whatever it is she's currently scared of *INSIDE*. I got lucky with this one, since it's a command I regularly use to let her know it's time to go back inside. Every time she starts her shakes and I give her the inside command she immediately stops shaking, looks back at me, licks her lips, hangs her head and walks to the door. That for me is also kind of tricky though, when she hangs her head and looks sad it makes me realize that she wasn't shaking cause she was scared of whatever it was, she was shaking because she was excited and wanted to play. It's been oddly 65/35 with the reaction I get after commanding her. When she hangs her head and licks her lips it's because she wanted to just play with whatever animal it was, but if she doesn't and she just dead looks at the door and goes straight to it it's because she's realized that she has another option to get away from what's scaring her instead of killing it.

I wouldn't have gotten a pit bull for a guard dog. That's not what they were bred for. They don't have the natural suspicion of strangers that actual guard dog breeds have.

i had a young male jump all over my 3 yr old cocker an cos his manners was so bad he told him off the couple wa like laughing saying isnt that cute like no its bad manners tell ya dog no or jarvis will an he put up with it for so long then told him they didnt like it but there is such thing as bad dog manners go look it up told erm ...ever since that they keep away ...fair enough they clearly dont want to learn or understand doggy manners ..id rother they keep there rude dog away an there ignorant selfs away
