To the people who would say destroy or tare down places like the Eagles Nest, history no matter how difficult or heinous needs to be preserved. Yes, we can learn from a book or a photo but to be able to stand in a place where men came to fight tyranny and liberate and oppressed people is much more impactful. Places like the Eagles Nest are trophies and monuments to our troops who sacrificed everything to fight evil. Those who forget their history are condemned to repeat it.

I visited there in 2009. Eva Braun, with her sister Gretl, would walk to Kehlstein Haus and back frequently from the Berghoff. The area, including the Hotel zum Turken, is featured within my book, OUR PLAN TO KILL HITLER, (available from Amazon) along with my earlier larger companion A BRIDGE TO TIME, A Re-enactor's Journey, which includes how I became interested in WWII along with how WWII re-enacting came to be. As a result of researching my book that was inspired by my visit, I wanted to return but Covid intervened. The larger book includes a suggested travelogue. I recommend staying at least one night at the Turken. The Turken's owner's granddaughter was there when I visited and she too is included. Had I returned I'd take the bus up to the Eagles Nest and take the easier hike back down. You must also hike over to the overlook where AH's Teahaus was. You can find this route on line.
