At the Edge of the Abyss. The battle for Mariupol through the eyes of a witness. (War in Ukraine)

March 2022. Mariupol must be taken. The "Somali" battalion of the Donetsk People's Republic is part of a force sent to assault the fortified city. As they approach Mariupol, little do they grasp what would happen to the city over the coming weeks, the sheer scale of the catastrophe.
What hardships would befall the civilians? And who among the soldiers would see it through to the end, alive?
For two months a strike team led by an officer with the codename "Sparrow" / "Vorobey" fought in close quarters combat, building to building and street after street, forcing a numerically superior foe to retreat into the Azovstal complex, a gigantic metallurgical factory dominating the city. It would become a fortress for the Ukrainian "Azov" battalion. (Note added May 27: And the place of their eventual surrender!)
Maxim Fadeed was there on the frontlines with the forward assault teams of the "Somali" battalion. He spent four weeks in the fires of war. He was witness to and immortalized key events, the drama and the tragedies as well as the victory, in his new documentary, "At the edge of the abyss".

Yeah I think he has to be careful with a non Russian audience. For people who don’t know about the use of civilian cars by the Ukrainians that scene could look really bad. I’m not sure why he cut the scene with the dead Ukrainian though, sick Americans have been celebrating pictures of dead Russian soldiers for weeks. They shouldn’t be scandalized by a dead Ukrainian.

I was at the screening of the last documentary in St. Petersburg. Maxim himself is from Donetsk and started shooting all this to show it all from the other side. He sees all this and has been shooting since 2014, when Ukraine began to bomb them, when the whole world was not interested in it and no one in the West even knew where Ukraine and the LDNR were. So it's very stupid to call him a propagandist. Although you won't show how Ukraine has been shelling Donetsk for so many years. Any war is bad, but when they talk about it in the West, it's just ridiculous if you know history.

You kinda forgot to mention the part where the "innocent civilians" managed to shoot down civilian airbuss with Russias supplied AAA system Buk. Or about Russias military presence in form of unmarked troops - giving the famous nickname "little green man". Or how putin was publicly declaring there are no Russian soldiers on Krymea just to decorate them with medals some months later and declaring the Krymea was allways part of Russia. Instead of finding diplomatic solution - deployment of peacekeeping troops, observers etc. Putin simply rolled his tanks towards the Kiev in the typical Russian manner (same as in Czechoslovakia 1968 etc.)

I have a feeling there is so much material that it is possible to extend this to a mini series after the movie release. Where there might be slightly different focus in each episode, maybe 4-6x 25-40 minute episodes with one that focuses a little but more on the people involved, the people they meet and their fate/background, the background to the war, the way forward and so on but with the combat footage being what sets the pace and framing. I'm certain it will be great, but I also know how often film makers have to leave lose ends due to time constraints of the format etc. Wish you the best Max.
