Amazing speeds for Malizia with Rosie at the helm and Antoine giving a visual as she surfs through the swells. Also, there is an absolute madman outside on the deck giving us a stunning feel for what it's like to be flying through the Southern Ocean aboard such a magnificent sailing machine. Bravo Malizia!

Years ago I learned Celestial Nav from a Captain who had sailed around the horn and he introduced me to a book ' The Blind Horns Hate', it was a great read. In it there was a page from a Whaling captains log that read "Made 30 miles today.; Ten up, ten down and ten forward." Amazing footage, thanks for the ride!

Love the drone videos! And while I love the horizon shots and scenes of the boats crashing through waves, I really like some of the longer tracks that have been put out as well. It gives some great perspective on how the boats actually move through the water. It's a long-haul race, and getting to sit and watch for a couple minutes and see how it generally progresses through the water over time adds some important perspective to the coverage.

Its amazing to me that the designers did not take in to account the wave size. These boats are specifically designed for this part of the oceans, yet only one designer took the wave height into account. Maybe not quite so much as Melizia, but certainly some more rocker would have been a good move.
@dnarowdy Жыл бұрын
Your statement is untrue. All boats are designed to go around the world. Malazia is only better equipped for high seastate downwind conditions. I read somewhere Malama was designed more for reaching conditions and is way lighter, like holcim, wich makes more sense in the long run. But time will tell what the best design for this race is! Quite exciting
@camdensimon8964 Жыл бұрын
@@dnarowdy His statement has merit. They may be designed for these conditions, but with half of the fleet breaking every leg, the designs are clearly not well designed for this race
@dnarowdy Жыл бұрын
Have you ever seriously sailed a regatta, finished regularly in the top 10% of a fleet and never broken anything? It’s about knowing your material and how far to push. The only design failure we’ve seen from these boats is a crack on the rudder of Malama. The rest is to be expected. Especially when you are racing for 30 days through the southern ocean. And apart from doing well in these conditions I don’t see Malizia winning any prizes with a heavy boat. There are really cool articles on the interent about the designs and the choises. It’s more interesting to comoare the expectations and choises based on that material and what we are seeing throughout the race then to say that it’s an oversight to design the boats the way the are now. You might even be surprised about who designed all these boats.

Also Guyot has circumnavigated the globe many times. Delamination problems were seen on the vo65 mapfre on the first lap around the world.
@timlolxP Жыл бұрын
@@dnarowdy Most of these Imocas, apart from 11h, are designed mainly for the vendee. The Imocas are most of the time in the southern ocean when you look at the vendee, about 2/3 of the distance. It makes sense to optimize the yachts for that, with that said holcim/biotherm is a really good compromise for all conditions. When you look at the new designs, i would half of them go in the direction of a pronounced scow bow, which was introduced by bureau vallee, now malizia and charal. The other half goes the way of holcim or 11h, optimized for more conditions. Guyot was not made with these big foils in mind, yes it went around the world 2 times as far as i can tell, but not with these massive foils. The loads which go through the yacht are massive compared to the yacht alex thomson sailed 7 years ago with the small foils. Simply put the loads are to high for the hull, with crashing and hitting the waves in spots where the hull was never meant to be hit that hard. I think everybody knew that guyot wouldnt perform great bc the desing is flawed. Its like putting a V8 in a VW golf, sure it will be fast but a car meant for it will perform better and be more reliable than a modification.

Anyone know why foiling boats are used in this race? It was probably said already, but I missed it.
@cinavik Жыл бұрын
The VO65s required too large a crew for covid rules and probably funding, and this was the next-best-thing available as well as a test run for the future.

@@cinavik Thank you! When I first saw the foils, I couldn’t get my mind off the southern ocean.
@TheOceanRace Жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, the IMOCA was chosen as the new main class for The Ocean Race and unlike the VO65 which are one design, the IMOCAs follow a box rule. Having foils are an option but not an obligation.

So, from what i see, malizia have been able to manipulate the best out of their boat by dialling down the horsepower available.
@gustav1974 Жыл бұрын
How much is the autopilot steer the boat, is it all the time? I'm little bit confused, I mean the autopilot can't see the waves, how can an autopilot doing a better job than a human being in those big waves? I mean wouldn't it be fever nosedives if you steer the boat manually?
@rolandtb3 Жыл бұрын
For now the other crews must be jealous of Malizia, having so much fun for a change. Strategies will change soon. Narrowing gate to Cape Horn, gusting winds, heavier sea state. Path, speed, pounding, sleep, energy, boat and sail damage or conservation. Bunching fleet of wary sailors.
