This incredible WWII color film was shot in Tunisia by U.S. Army cameramen, and made with the input of Hollywood legends Darryl Zanuck and John Ford. It follows fresh American troops led by Lt. Gen Mark Clark and Lt. Gen Kenneth Anderson as they join the fight against the Afrika Korps. After arriving at the city of Bone, troops travel overland to the Tunisian Front. Advances are made into the Atlas mountains and enemy forces engaged. Nazi aircraft raid Bone and a hospital train near Souk-el-Khemis. Finally the convoy crosses into Algeria, all the while following protocols to lessen the chances of German air attacks. During the Second Battle of Tebourba, December 22-25, 1942, the Germans are forced to retreat and prisoners taken, but the battle for North Africa is far from over. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD. For more information visit www.PeriscopeFi...

Somewhere in the middle of that hell my Grandfather fought there. Rolled across N.Africa, skipped to Sicily and then up Italy. It’s always hard to imagine that the sweetest and kindest man I ever knew went through so much and how made it out. Grandpa was like many of his generation, he didn’t talk much about it until his days were ending. He was a hell of a man.

These American troops were not fighting the Afrikakorps as the caption states. They were fighting the 5th Panzer Army. The Afrikakorps were far away in Libya and the British were dealing with them.

The US Army name at the time was M3 Medium Tank. Not to be confused with the M3 Light Tank, M3 Halftrack, M3 Scout Car or the M3 Submachinegun. The British army however *did* get confused, so Winston Churchill himself ordered that the British army give the tanks a name instead. Hence the US variant being named after a Confederate. The names did eventually filter into American use and (at least in the case of the Sherman IIRC) were officially adopted by the US Army, but not until *after* the war. I imagine the writers meeting for this script went something like: "What are those tanks called?" "M3 Mediums" "That's a bit boring" "The Brits call theirs General Grant" "Now we're talking!" "But they call ours General Lees" "We can't call them that, he was a traitor! Call them Grants!"

I just commented on this as well, that they call the tank a “Grant,” when in fact it was a Lee. The M3 Grant had no .30 cal MG mounted in a cupola on the 37mm Turret. The M3 Lee DID. Or was in a .50 M2 in the Cupola??? The tanks shown have the Cupola, and are thus M3 Lee Medium Tanks.

The United States Army took a serious ass beating at Kasserine Pass Tunisia. The American equipment was as good as the German equipment. But the defeat came about because of two reasons. The Americans were inexperienced in combat and the commanding general Lloyd Fredendall was a rear echelon tent hog who did not inspire confidence in his soldiers. A hard lesson learned is a hard lesson learned. After the battle Fredendall was replaced by the highly aggressive Patton with Bradley his second in command. The rest as they say is military history.

AAARGH!!! At 4:40, the narrator says “The General Grants roll ashore.” Those are M3 (General) Lee tanks, NOT Grants. The M3 Grant had no cupola mounted .30 Machine Gun in it, while the M3 Lee DID. There is CLEARLY a Cupola and .30 Machine Gun on these tanks. Also… The M3 Grant was used by the British nearly exclusively, while the M3 Lee was nearly exclusively used by the Americans.

The footage towards the end was taken during the first week of December as the Germans were throwing everything they had to push the Allies out of Tebourba and Medjez El Bab. Despite the local German retreat shown, the Germans were ultimately successful, prolonging the North African campaign by months

guys, in American service they were Lees Or the M3 General Lee. The smaller tank was an M3 or early M5 Stuart. The difference between The M3 Lee and The export version the M3 Grant was the commanders 30cal hatch. The Grant did not have this feature. They didnt like where the US put the radio equipment. All tanks in US service had the commander turret and were Lees

Chuckles, I guess intentional dis-information. American wartime flick, but calls the M3s a "Grant". That's a US star on the turrets, so they are M3 Lees. (and obviously crewed by GIs). M3 Grants were "lend-lease" to the Brits and had a different 37mm upper turret among other changes.

The clip from 33:39 to 34:05 is not near Tebourba. It's in the Hunt's Gap valley, only 500 meters ahead of the tanks in this well-known photo from a few weeks later: www.bild.bundesarchiv.de/archives/barchpic/search/?search%5Bform%5D%5BSIGNATUR%5D=Bild+101I-557-1022-02A&search%5Bview%5D=detail&search%5Bfocus%5D=1

Those Thompson machine guns sure looked awkward to handle. I suppose they had good points about them. But i wouldn't want to use one in a combat situation. a 45 round is a heavy inaccurate round coming out of a machine gun.
